A New Place To Talk Anonymously About Controversial Topics

What is Candid?

Candid is a way for you to voice your opinion about specific topics, without having your ideas linked to your personal information. Social media is a great way to share and view content from your friends. It's not always to best place to brag about your new orca-skin coat. When you share stuff like this, you may find friends start to judge you or even get really mad at you. Sometimes you get into it with total strangers who decide to screenshot your posts and send it to your employer! That's why it's sometimes better to express certain views anonymously. It's your ideas that matter, not always the person behind them.

The solution is an app called Candid. This app lets you anonymously share your opinion on all kinds of different topics. You'll find groups of people talking about politics, movies, social issues and even groups based on the town that you live in. Want to let people know that the local pumpkin eating contest is rigged? This is the place to do it. Do people even eat pumpkins? Like can you just take a bite like it's a apple? Hmmm… I'll ask about it on Candid.

MechDome is a Developer Tool that Automatically Converts Android Apps into iOS and OSX Apps

Cross-platform development has presented a major challenge for most independent developers for many years. Quite often, it's simply too much of an time and resource investment to learn a new programming language in order to port your app over to another platform.

For years, this fact of resource allocation is what has pushed many developers to primarily focus their efforts on iOS, due to the more lucrative market. Thanks to projects such as Xamarin, however, developers who are familiar with C# have been able to push their projects across iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile. But Android developers are most familiar with writing in Java, so using Xamarin would require a developer to familiarize themselves with a new language and build platform. We've covered one project aimed at bridging the gap between mobile operating systems by providing a cross-development platform for Java developers – Intel's Multi-OS Engine – but there's no telling where that project is headed. That's where MechDome comes in.

MechDome is a start-up company based in California and incorporated in January that has developed a conversion tool to automatically create native iOS and OS X apps from your Android app. No need to learn how to use a new IDE or API. All you need to do is send an APK file to MechDome (no need to send them your source code), and the fully automated tool will compile a standalone binary in seconds for iOS and OS X that the developer can then distribute on Apple's App Store. We sat down in an interview with MechDome's founder and CEO, Mario Kosmiskas, to see a demonstration of the tool in action – and it works. Although there are some limitations due to fundamental differences between how iOS and Android operate (which we'll discuss below), the tool has already produced a few live apps on the Apple App Store such as the open-source Reddit client RedReader and an open-source Sudoku client to prove it works.

Android Apps on iOS with MechDome

The stated goal of MechDome is to allow developers to convert an unmodified Android app into a native iOS or OS X app. Compared to technologies such as Intel's Multi-OS Engine or Xamarin, an Android developer does not need to know how to bind an Objective-C library because the tool will handle that for you. Nor is there any need to use a UI builder to modify your Android app, as MechDome handles converting all Android UI elements. Yes, even Android tablet apps translate nicely into a format suitable for iPads.

rr1 RedReader on iOS rr3

rr3android RedReader on Android rr1android
MechDome's biggest promise is that the converted Android app will function in a manner that users of the target OS will be familiar with. For instance, the Android share menu will be replaced with the native share sheet in iOS, and will include the ability to use AirDrop if applicable. Apps that post notifications in Android will instead display a notification in iOS's Notification Center. Certain intents such as opening a camera on Android will indeed open the camera on the iOS device, and URL intents on Android will call Safari on iOS. Content providers on Android that access contacts or the calendar will instead access the relevant iOS or OS X databases for this information.
Android UI Elements on iOS Slide-In Menu Converted Share Functionality Text Input Posting Notifications

In general though, all hardware functionality required for the use of an Android app will be mapped directly to use the relevant hardware in iOS. Software functions, though, can be split into 3 distinct categories: 1) functionality that doesn't exist on iOS (such as the toast message) will be implemented directly, 2) functionality that exists on both iOS and Android are replaced with the relevant iOS method, and 3) functionality that exists on iOS but not on Android (such as Apple's 3D Touch library) cannot be converted but can be implemented through the use of a library. Most activities, views, services, toasts, and basic content providers should be convertible from Android to iOS, according to MechDome's founder.

But as mentioned previously, there are indeed some limitations to this tool that are imposed by the nature of how iOS works. One of the biggest challenges facing an Android developer looking to convert his or her app to iOS is how to handle a background service. iOS is much more stringent with when and what kinds of background services that third-party applications can run, for better or worse. Furthermore, the rich intent system present in Android that allows for inter-app communication is largely absent on iOS. Finally, the Google Play Services API is currently not supported, so any app relying on Google services will not function. Thus, developers will be mostly limited to functionality that is accessed directly by manual user input, which should not pose a significant problem for most games or apps.

MechDome In Use
In a private demo, the tool does indeed seem to function as advertised. Mr. Kosmiskas demonstrated compiling several fully functional Android apps into working iOS and OSX apps. Toast notifications, notifications in the Notification Center, webview, location access, text input, and general functionality of UI elements all worked in demo. The AOSP calculator running on iOS looked and functioned exactly as it does on any Android device.
calculator1 calculator2
Updating an application and re-compiling it for iOS was also shown, and the process fairly simple. The developer, in this case Mr. Kosmiskas, demonstrated changing a text box to display "XDA-Developers" in Android Studio. He then exported the app, generated a signed APK, and compiled the iOS and OS X binaries in seconds from the MechDome server. When the iOS app was started using an emulator, the changes made in Android Studio were present.

Currently, MechDome is undergoing a free public beta program. Developers can register their app on the MechDome website to receive an invite to test converting their Android app. No pricing information has yet been unveiled for the service, unfortunately. Still, it's an interesting project to stay on the lookout for if you're an Android developer looking to eventually make waves in Apple's ecosystem without having to expend much effort of your own.

Google Reportedly Wants OEMs to Integrate Google Home in Products

October 4th is going to be a big day for the Mountain View internet giant. It's all but confirmed to be the day Google officially announces the upcoming Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones. We've seen mock-ups created, the the front display assembly leaked, photos showing the front and back of the devices, and software details about how they will have 2 of each partition and how that could allow community developers to do a number of unique things with custom software.

It's fair to say the Pixel and Pixel XL have not been shy over the last couple of months. We're looking forward to seeing these two devices officially announced next week, but rumor has it that smartphones won't be the only thing Google unveils on October 4th. If true, we could see Google announcing hardware products like the Chromecast dongle that can support Ultra HD video, the Daydream View VR headset, and Google Home.

You can think of Google Home as their way to compete with the Amazon Echo. A standalone device that allows you to access your entertainment (like playing songs and playlists), manage your everyday tasks (like setting reminders, making reservations, controlling your lights and thermostat), and having access to Google search all with just your voice. It was originally thought that Google would be the sole manufacturer of this device, but a new report says otherwise.

Variety is reporting that Google is wanting other OEMs to integrate Google Home into their own products. At first it seemed like this meant something similar to how they did their OnHub router where multiple manufacturers could make their own, but it could go beyond that. At a closed door meeting with Google, it's said that Google wants other OEMs to utilize Google Home like they have been with Google Cast. The report also says that Google might be displaying "aggressive muscle-flexing" in its negotiation by telling manufacturers that they'd have to incorporate the service if they want their products to be able to use Chromecast at all.

Either way, we could see a number of products like smart TVs, soundbars, Bluetooth speakers, and more have Google Home baked right into the product and as early as next summer.

Qualcomm is Reportedly in Talks to Acquire NXP Semiconductor

Qualcomm's financial standing seemed to have started going slightly down hill when Samsung opted for their own Exynos chipset over the traditional Snapdragon variant in select markets last year. The company had to revise their sales targets for the entire year because of this and while they did beat analyst expectations in Q3 of 2015, revenues were still down $7.1 billion during the same quarter the year before.

The company saw profits increase during Q1 of this year, but overall revenue was still down 19% YoY due to a fall in shipments. Qualcomm losing some of its modem business to Intel puts pressure on them too. So we can see Qualcomm hasn't had the best track record lately (more specifically, last year), but a new report suggests they can even this out with a possible acquisition. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Qualcomm is looking to acquire NXP Semiconductor for upwards of $30 billion.

Less than a year ago, NXP had acquired Freescale Semiconductor for a cool $12 billion that made the company the "the world's top maker of automotive electronics." See, while NXP does offer some ARM SoCs, they are focused more on the low-power components for integrated devices. The company sells a number of automobile products like temperature sensors and power management controllers.

During the first two quarters of this year, NPX saw over a 50% increase in revenue growth compared to the same quarter a year before. So while we could see some overlap here with NXP's SoC business, this acquisition could be more about expanding away from smartphones and diving into other markets. This type of diversity would allow Qualcomm to still thrive if they happen to have another slip up like they did with the Snapdragon 810, and at the very least it allows Qualcomm to expand without as much risk by acquiring a repertoire of established designs.

LeEco Sends Out Press Invites for an Event in the US

LeEco, formerly known as LeTV, is a massive Chinese conglomerate that has their hand in all sorts of industries. The company deals with music, sports, smart TVs, cloud computing, driverless cars, and has made a big splash in China and India with their smartphone business. Much like Xiaomi, LeEco's smartphones are priced very competitively and with impressive build quality for the price you pay.

The LeEco Le Max 2 was already a popular phone for the company in India, and they just gave it a temporary price cut, down to Rs. 17,999 (~$270USD). It is hard for OEMs to compete with LeEco when it comes to price, and lately we've seen the company start to plan an expansion into the United States. They opened up their first United States headquarters in San Jose earlier this year, then bought over 48 acres of land from Yahoo a month later, and finally confirmed something big for the US this fall season.

At the time they announced their fall surprise for the United States, LeEco had already hired 400 employees. The company says they they are on track to grow this number to 1,000 before the end of the year so it seems obvious they are planning for something big in the states. Now, LeEco has started to send out press invites to various technology publications for an upcoming event that will take place in San Francisco on October 19th.

They have yet to confirm exactly what this event will be about, but many are speculating it will be the first time their products will officially be sold in the country, and some reports claim they might be bringing their services too. But again, LeEco is involved in a number of industries so it's hard to pinpoint exactly what they're planning. We would like to think they will announce plans to sell their smartphones in the US (and we believe it makes the most sense, given other similarly competitive companies are doing the same lately), but this could be about smart TVs, smart bikes, etcetera. We'll just have to wait a few weeks and see how things turn out.

More than a Meme: Google uses TheVerge.com to Benchmark Nexus Devices

Digging around in AOSP is a great way to make new discoveries about Android, and this time we've come across something rather hilarious. For some time, users have reported that the technology website TheVerge.com provided slow performance on mobile devices.

Now to their credit, their website performance has improved over time in my experience. Plus, it's not as if other sites (including our own) don't have issues we can strive to work on, but nevertheless I found it quite amusing that in its official set of workload benchmarks, Google decided to use The Verge in their testing.

Android Workload Automation

Workload Automation (WA) is a framework developed by ARM for collecting performance data on Android devices by executing a suite of many repeatable workloads. Google benchmarks performance on their devices by doing many of these workload tests and collecting a summary of power usage, which they then import into a spreadsheet to see how their optimizations have improved performance over time. The company picks and chooses which apps to include in its test suite, but in general they limit themselves to most of the popular Google apps. That's the gist of how it works, but we'll show the evidence from source code and describe the test suites in more detail so you can get a better picture of what automated tests Google does to measure performance.

Within AOSP, there is a directory dedicated to the workload automation tests. The apps that are used for testing are defined in defs.sh, and generally fall under one of two categories: default, pre-installed Google App or third-party web browser. One benchmark app stands out from the rest, and it's com.BrueComputing.SunTemple/com.epicgames.ue4.GameActivity which I assume refers to the BrueBench ST Reviewer benchmark which is based on the Unreal Engine 4.

  # default activities. Can dynamically generate with -g. gmailActivity='http://ift.tt/1jbuT1y' clockActivity='com.google.android.deskclock/com.android.deskclock.DeskClock' hangoutsActivity='http://ift.tt/1rktmqC' chromeActivity='com.android.chrome/_not_used' contactsActivity='com.google.android.contacts/com.android.contacts.activities.PeopleActivity' youtubeActivity='com.google.android.youtube/com.google.android.apps.youtube.app.WatchWhileActivity' cameraActivity='com.google.android.GoogleCamera/com.android.camera.CameraActivity' playActivity='com.android.vending/com.google.android.finsky.activities.MainActivity' feedlyActivity='com.devhd.feedly/com.devhd.feedly.Main' photosActivity='com.google.android.apps.photos/com.google.android.apps.photos.home.HomeActivity' mapsActivity='http://ift.tt/1vjKlL1' calendarActivity='com.google.android.calendar/com.android.calendar.AllInOneActivity' earthActivity='com.google.earth/com.google.earth.EarthActivity' calculatorActivity='com.google.android.calculator/com.android.calculator2.Calculator' calculatorLActivity='com.android.calculator2/com.android.calculator2.Calculator' sheetsActivity='com.google.android.apps.docs.editors.sheets/com.google.android.apps.docs.app.NewMainProxyActivity' docsActivity='http://ift.tt/2cEZB09' operaActivity='com.opera.mini.native/com.opera.mini.android.Browser' firefoxActivity='org.mozilla.firefox/org.mozilla.firefox.App' suntempleActivity='com.BrueComputing.SunTemple/com.epicgames.ue4.GameActivity' homeActivity='com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/com.google.android.launcher.GEL'

These activities are launched via the ADB command line with the following Systrace options to measure app performance:

dflttracecategories="gfx input view am rs power sched freq idle load memreclaim"

The Chrome app in particular is launched with a flag to load The Verge:

theverge

As for why the test seems to differ for the volantis (Nexus 9), I'm not exactly sure. Anyways, as for what tests this Chrome-activity-with-The-Verge actually goes through, we can determine by looking at the source code of the workload automation tests.

Test Suites

First up, there's the systemapps.sh test, which Google states works as such:

  # Script to start a set of apps in order and then in each iteration # switch the focus to each one. For each iteration, the time to start # the app is reported as measured using atrace events and via am ThisTime. # The output also reports if applications are restarted (eg, killed by # LMK since previous iteration) or if there were any direct reclaim # events.

Next, there's the recentfling.sh test, which works like this:

  # Script to start a set of apps, switch to recents and fling it back and forth. # For each iteration, Total frames and janky frames are reported.

And then there's chromefling.shwhich tests Chrome's performance rather simply:

  # Script to start 3 chrome tabs, fling each of them, repeat # For each iteration, Total frames and janky frames are reported.

Another amusing test in the Workload Automation suite, although unrelated to The Verge, is the youtube.sh performance test which measures UI jank

  # # Script to play a john oliver youtube video N times. # For each iteration, Total frames and janky frames are reported. # # Options are described below. # iterations=10 app=youtube searchText="last week tonight with john oliver: online harassment" vidMinutes=15

Finally, each of these tests are used to measure real world power usage by cycling through them for a certain amount of time, as defined in pwrtest.sh:

  # Script to gather perf and perf/watt data for several workloads # # Setup: # # - device connected to monsoon with USB passthrough enabled # - network enabled (baseline will be measured and subtracted # from results) (network needed for chrome, youtube tests) # - the device is rebooted after each test (can be inhibited # with "-r 0") # # Default behavior is to run each of the known workloads for # 30 minutes gathering both performance and power data.

Google can then collect these data using pwrsummary.sh and import them into a spreadsheet:

  # print summary of output generated by pwrtest.sh # # default results directories are <device>-<date>[-experiment]. By default # match any device and the year 201*. # # Examples: # # - show output for all bullhead tests in july 2015: # ./pwrsummary.sh -r "bh-201507*" # # - generate CSV file for import into spreadsheet: # ./pwrsummary.sh -o csv #

These are all fairly common real-world UI performance tests, not unlike the kinds you would see in our own testing. It appears that the change to load The Verge's homepage when opening Chrome was rather recent, as before last year Google would only open a new tab in Chrome during these tests. A change made in May 28th, 2015 introduced the use of The Verge when testing Chrome, however. As amusing as it is that Google is using The Verge of all places when performing Workload Automation testing, keep in mind that this doesn't mean The Verge is the worst offender out there for web performance.

Far from it, in fact, as many other webpages suffer from mediocre performance thanks to the proliferation of more and more ads to compensate for the rise of ad-blockers. Indeed, it's most likely that the decision to use The Verge was simply one out of convenience, given how tech savvy the average Googler is and the inside joke among many enthusiasts regarding The Verge's webpage performance.

New Android Wear 2.0 Preview with Smart Replies, Watch App Store — Main Release Delayed until 2017

There are both good and bad news for Android Wear owners today — well, the good news are mostly reserved for a few lucky watch owners. But in short, a new Android Wear 2.0 Preview is available for download and flashing.

The new Developer Preview 3 brings some rather big additions, including the additions of a Google Play Store on Android Wear. This allows you to easily find and install apps directly on the watch, which synergies perfectly with the watch-only app capabilities of Android Wear 2.0 You can browse recommended apps in the home view, search for apps, and then install them on your watch, as well as update applications. This makes app management easier, and you can install the watch-app portion of a service so you don't need both the phone app and watch app, as the former are no longer necessary. Developers can now build and publish watch-only applications!

An on-watch store might sound clunky, but Google surveyed developers and ran studies that concluded users repeatedly looked for a way to discover new applications right from the watch. Developers can publish their apps on the Play Store for Android Wear by following these steps, making sure the Wear 2.0 apps set minSdkVersion to 24 or higher, use the runtime permissions model, and are uploaded via multi-APK using the Play Developer Console.

Android Wear 2.0 Dev Preview 3

There are also a few new, useful features and optimizations, with a prominent one being improvements to complications for developers, a new UI component for developers to optimize vertical lists for round displays, and Smart Reply. That's right, Android Wear now generates Smart Reply responses for MessagingStyle notifications. These are generated by an on-watch machine learning model based on the context of the notification (no data is uploaded to the cloud to generate responses). Sadly, said notification style with images posted by standalone apps don't show images in the notification (bug), and there is no support for notification groups.

Android Wear 2.0 Dev Preview 3

You'll need to flash the system image onto your watch and download the beta version of the Android Wear app on your device. Developers can also use the emulator to test their applications if they don't have a watch to test on. Hopefully you'll enjoy this preview, because the real deal is not coming for a while: Google now says that they've decided to continue the preview program into early 2017, and that the first watches will receive Android Wear 2.0 around that date. This means that the Android Wear 2.0 update won't come until next year for most of us, at the earliest. This also likely means we won't see Pixel watches this year.

Google has not mentioned any official reason for this delay in the release timeline, except the receipt of feedback from the developer community. And the delay of Android Wear 2.0 likely isn't good news for smartwatch OEMs either, as they would now have to settle with either the existing stable release, or question the future of the platform entirely. There are no new successors to existing smartwatches coming in from the big names, and even Huawei is in talks to jump ship to Tizen. Existing stakeholders who have invested in new smartwatches this year, like ASUS with its ZenWatch 3, are also not likely to be happy with how the timeline has taken a turn for the worse. All in all, considering the current position of Android Wear in the market in light of its competition, the delay in release must have been a very strong decision to take, just before the upcoming holiday season.

What are your thoughts on the delay in Android Wear 2.0 release? Also, how was your experience with the Dev Previews of Android Wear 2.0 so far? Let us know in the comments below!

What Features Do You Want on Google Apps on Android?

Google Apps on Android are a love-hate affair. Average consumers find the pre-loaded set of Google Apps to fit within their requirements enough to not worry about alternatives. But on the other hand, the apps themselves are not the best examples of how to create guidelines, or how to make apps either.

The previous statement becomes clearer when you expand your scope to look at Google Apps on other ecosystems, like iOS or on desktop platforms like Chrome OS. Apps made by Google themselves on these platforms feature a different design, and often offer functionality that the Android app gets days, weeks and months later (looking at you, Hangouts). Some Android apps, like Youtube, are missing useful features present on desktop. So we ask you,

What Features do Google Apps on Android sorely lack, when compared to the same set of Google Apps on other platforms? Which was the most frustrating discrepancy you noticed when you switched from using Google Apps on Android to other platforms?

Let us know in the comments below!

[DEV]Testing TWRP for Galaxy Tab 8.9 (P7310 / p5wifi)

This is a trial at making TWRP 3.0 for Galaxy Tab 8.9 (P7310 / p5wifi). I don't not have this device. This build of TWRP has not been tested by me.

The P7310 is very similar to the P7510 which I make ROMs and recoveries for. You may have already been using my AOSP ROMs which have adapted by others to work with the P7310. This version of recovery is exactly the same as the TWRP 3.0 builds I do for P5710 except for the kernel.

This version of recovery uses the extra partition for storing recovery system files. This partition hasn't been used since the original Samsung ROMs. If you have been using it for whatever reason then back up the data you have stored on there. If you haven't been using it then this is of no concern to you.

Again, this has not been tested by me since I don't have this device so try it at your own peril.

Installation:
  1. Install twrp3020-20160922-p5wifi.zip
    or
    flash twrp3020-20160922-p5wifi.tar.md5 with odin
  2. Reboot into recovery.
  3. Report back on whether or not it works.

Steps to take if it doesn't work:
  1. Flash the old twrp 2.7.1.0 with Odin.
  2. Continue on with life.

Why is the network signal strength on my Z3 so much weaker then my old V?

Okay. I have had my new Z3 for a while now and I love everything about the phone, accept for the reception quality. I am on AT&T and I travel in the same area routinly and I always had great reception in my normal travel area with my old Xperia V. At my home I always had 4 to 5 bars of signal. My new Z3 never gets more then 1 bar, if any. I almost never had dropped calls on my V no matter where I went. My Z3 drops calls all the time. My mom lives 150 miles away and I go to visit her at least twice a month. Many times I have driven the entire way while talking on my phone (with my BT headset) and never had a dropped call. I have been to her house several times since I got this Z3 and I have no signal about 80% of the time. I could not make a call if my life depended on it. At first I thought that the problem was that my V was using 3G towers and my new Z3 is using 4G towers. But I swtiched my Z3 to 3G only and it still has not signal in areas where my V used to have 4 to 5 bars.

As far as specs go, the Z3 (D6603) has all the same bands that the V has and more. The Z3 works on all the following 3G and 4G bands.

3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100
4G Network LTE band 1(2100), 2(1900), 3(1800), 4(1700/2100), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 13(700), 17(700), 20(800)

These are the bands the Xperia V operates on:

3G bands HSDPA 850 / 900 / 2100

4G bands LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 20(800)

So what is the problem here? Why is the reception so bad on the Z3?

Yesterday (finally) I upgraded my nexus to Android 7.0, I made a clean installation (factory reset from marshmallow, new wipe from fastboot and flash firmware) Everything works great except for notifications that are unbearable.
  • If im responding to a message using the quick replay and a new message arrives the keyboard is closed and the written text gets lost.
  • If I remove the notification with a swipe, it will appears again repeated every 5 minutes.
  • When there are grouped messages (Ex. Telegram groups or whatsapp) they are not displayed grouped together, but It is shown only the first or the last message arrived. If I remove the notification with a swipe, when a new message arrives repeatedly reappears me the initial message notification.
    Code:

Example:    Messages in a group:        FriendA: TEXT1,  FriendB: TEXT2,  FriendC: TEXT3
In the notification only appears the FriendA's message as if it were a single message.
If I remove the notification and FriendD writes TEXT4 , the notification of FriendA comes to me again.

How can I fix these annoying issues?

Only Fastboot Mode after flashing new ROM

Hi,

My OP2 is currently a bit broken.

What I had:
- rooted phone with Oxygen 3.0.2 (it just worked fine)

What I did:
- download new Oxygen and supersu beta
- reboot into recovery
- first flash the ROM, then flash supersu
- wipe cache
- reboot

That was it, it keeps showing the red dot with the rotating two white dots. And it goes on forever ....

When I try to reboot into recovery (Pwr and VolUp) it goes to Fastboot Mode. The only positive thing for now is that my laptop finds the OP2 when it is in Fastboot Mode ...

fastboot oem device-info shows:
Code:

... INFO        Device tampered: false
INFO    Device unlocked: true
INFO    Device is_verified: false
INFO    Charger screen enabled: false
INFO    Display panel:
INFO    console_locked: 1
INFO    exec_console_unconsole: 0
OKAY

How can I fix this? (I created a backup by using Titanium, that I uploaded to my Google Drive before flashing)

Making Truecrypt Work Properly on Android Devices

Hello. So, I am using Cryptonite and I want to make TC work on the device (Android 5). I can mount the container just fine but only the root can have full access to it (read and write access) since it is the user that mounts the container (obviously). I am trying to make the container writable by any user. That is the issue I cannot seem to resolve. I have tried setting the TC binary SID and mounting as non-root user. That allowed me to bypass the original TC restriction. Then, I hit the fuse permission denied which I cannot seem to bypass.

Cryptonite also offers EncFS encryption. Though, the encfs binary gives me the user_allow_other option which allows me to mount and have full permissions to any user. I have been trying to find that option in relation with the truecrypt binary without luck. Is there any way to achieve what I want without having to change the truecrypt source code?

Thank you for reading.

Has anyone here encountered a skin for this phone? And when talking about skin, I mean products similar to Dbrand-skins. I'm not extremely happy with carrying my phone in a case as it's much more beautiful without it, but still, I want to protect the back aswell as it won't be as slippery. Verizon VoLTE not working on pre-paid

I can not get HD voice to work on Verizon with my Nexus 5X. I just want to be able to be on a call and still use data. This feature (HD Voice) is available for pre-paid customers now, but I can't seem to get it to work. I have "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" turned on, I went to my Verizon to turn it on and it says it was added and will be available to use within 15 minutes. I wait 20 minutes, reboot my phone and it doesn't work? I go back to my Verizon and it's like I never added it, so I go through the process again... Same results. I go to a live Chat and after 25+ minutes get referred to the 800 number. Now I've been on with Verizon fro 2+ hours and they are telling me it's because I have a non Verizon phone!?!? I explained to Verizon that if I put a Verizon sim card in my phone from someone who already has HD voice active on there account, that it works perfectly... Still on with them now any suggestions? Am I missing something?

Battery life, simply amazing...

Ok, so I've had this GS7A a few days now, did one or two full resets to get used to what I could disable with Package Disabler Pro (worth every penny, seriously, since we may more than likely never see a working root) and I have to say that I am pretty damned impressed with the battery life. Yes we all know this magnificent beast has a 4000 mAh battery in it so that has something to do with the lifespan obviously, but I wanted to post about my experience and perhaps try and stir up some discussion since this subforum is basically dead for the most part.

I know most discussion is over in the GS7 thread since it is the same hardware in a different case but even so - it's actually not the same device since it has a smaller 3000 mAh capacity battery so, if anyone is interested in sharing their battery life info and experience by all means do it.

A caveat:

Right now I don't actually have cellular service with this GS7A because it's currently still carrier locked to AT&T and I haven't gotten around to purchasing an unlock code. I'm not an AT&T customer, never have been, and since I got this device from a trade done through craigslist the person I made the deal with wasn't the original owner - he did state he found the phone in a casino bathroom here in Las Vegas (that sort of thing happens hundreds of times a day here, seriously) and yes the IMEI is blacklisted so I don't know if the original owner reported it as lost or stolen and since the blacklist system doesn't differentiate then it doesn't matter anyway.

Having said that I will state that I use Google Voice for all my "phone calls" and SMS/text duties these days so I don't actually need cellular service as long as I have Wi-Fi. Google Hangouts handles all that just fine so, I'm stating this here so you'll understand that I don't use the cellular radio at all, the GS7A stays in Airplane Mode constantly and with Wi-Fi enabled (and yes Wi-Fi is always on).

Yesterday I did quite a bit in terms of actually using the GS7A: I listened to a lot of "police scanner" streams using Scanner Radio Pro, I watched the entire Presidential debate on the GS7A using CNNGo, I watched maybe 30 minutes of video on Periscope (Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert), listened to my own music (Opus 128Kbps encodes) using GoneMAD for maybe 3 hours total since the last charge, listened to a radio station from back home in Virginia using TuneIn Radio for maybe 2 hours, read a lot of articles using Flipboard, and various other things including hitting the Play Store to check for updates as well as checking Gmail maybe a few dozen times during the day.

Also, I keep the screen brightness at about 40-45% on the slider, but I did go out for a walk yesterday lasting maybe 30 minutes and set it on Auto to compensate, probably had the screen on about 5-8 minutes in that time at ~full brightness.

So understanding all that here's what I've got currently from screenshots I just took like a minute ago:

Looking at that kind of battery life, just shy of 2 full days and barely cracking the 50% point, I can guess that if I did have actual cellular service I could easily get 1.5-2 days use of this device regularly which is truly astonishing. The last phone I had that could give me battery life even close to this was a ZTE Zmax which literally gave me 10+ hours of SOT on a regular basis (the 1280x720 display on that really saved a lot of battery life, and the Super AMOLED on this GS7A probably helps considerably as well).

I am truly impressed by this, and I have to wonder what kind of actual battery life I could get with a) cellular service working normally and also b) root so I can do even more tweaking as well as c) an unlocked bootloader to allow for a custom kernel.

And I haven't even enabled the Power Saver or Ultra Power Saver modes at all. :D

So, what's your battery life like using the Galaxy S7 Active? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Problem reinstalling stock firmware moto e 2

Hello, I have a motoE 2 LTE (XT1514 Surnia) that originally had Android 5.02, but it went to motorola for repair and came back with 6.0. Despite the upgrade, the bootloader screen still showed "software status: official".

Now I have unlocked the bootloader, installed TRWP] and used it to flash the stock ROM. I downloaded the XT1514_SURNIA_RETBR_DS_6.0_MPI24.65-39_cid12_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml ROM from this link I found on xda-developers. The system works but the bootloader screen now says "software status: modified"; before this process I made a backup using TWRP but after restoring the bakcup image the message still didn't change back to "software status: official".

I thought maybe I need to install the original Android (5.02) and then upgrade it to 6.0, so I downloaded the XT1514_SURNIA_RETBR_DS_5.0.2_LXI22.50-53.8_cid12_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml ROM from the same link. The problem is I get a failure message when I try to flash the 5.0.2 image

# mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin
target max-sparse-size: 256MB
sending 'partition' (32 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.125s]
writing 'partition'...
(bootloader) Preflash validation failed
FAILED (remote failure)
finished. total time: 0.570s

I did try with RSD Lite too, but I get the same message. I've read somewhere you can't dowgrade stock firmware, is the the problem here ? There is any workaround ?

My final objective is to have stock firmware with android 6.0 installed and the bootloader message saying it is official. I appreciate any help =)

I am just confused if Safestrap will make a backup of, and restore, a LP ROM. I know it works with my KK ROMs, but need clarification about LP. From what I've read it seems like it won't, but I don't understand why. Seems to me that it should work, so hopefully I am just misinterpreting what I've read.

When I turn on hotpot or USB tethering the phones internet connection just cuts of and I have to turn it off and on to get the 4g symbol.
Even if I get the data working on my phone while I'm tethered to my laptop , it shows no internet access .? Why
my laptop has no problem when connected to other hotspots or Ethernet cable.
And Im using internet on my phone ...no problems

C6903 Xperia Z1, baseband 8974-AAAAANAZQ-10270045-39, random crashes, please help

Hi there,

I have a C6903 with 16GB of storage. Baseband 8974-AAAAANAZQ-10270045-39. It ran fine under CM12.1 from last year. I recently updated to a CM12.1 nightly from August of this year. After that I started having problems with random crashes.

The phone would either freeze during operating, not responding to any input. I had to hard reset by holding the power button for a long time. This shuts the phone down. Then I start it and it boots up. Or the crash happens, when I am not using the phone, resulting in a black screen and an unresponsive phone. The fix is the same, shutting the phone down with a long press on the power button and then starting it up.

I switched from CM12.1 to AOSP Jaguar LP 5.1.1 from August (I haven't updated to September yet). I was crash free for three weeks, but now I am back with the same crashes. I found four crash logs in /data/anr, but I can't make much sense of them. I have them attached to the post.

The change in behavior when I install a new rom makes me think this could be software related, but getting the same crashes with two very different roms makes it look like a hardware issue.

What do you guys think? I don't want to go back to stock for testing, because I value privacy a lot and XPrivacy is so much work to set up right, IMHO. I like the privacy managers included with Jaguar or CM12.1 a lot. They are so much easier to use. But if I have to, I will go back to stock. Any other ideas? Can anyone interpret the crash logs? Is there anything useful there? Should I test something else?

Please help. Thank you for reading this post. :)

Problems with the Glass Panel?

How many of you are worried about having problems with the glass on the back panel? What I am worried about is having it scratch in a pocket or case, and also cracking if dropped or hit against something(I put my phones in my cupholder and it moves quite a bit).

I was thinking that I will probably have to get a skin or a "screen protector" for the glass panel. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Keyboard charging

I loose BT access to my keyboard periodically. Right now is one of those times. I find after a good charge, and a reboot, I can connect.

I operate on the charger, often. Since this keeps my pixel at 100%, I seldom have to charge in the closed lid (keyboard) mode. Then I got to thinking that that might account for my keyboard issues.

The keyboard is charged inductively when placed with camera eye to space-bar. But if the battery is at 100% when I close the keyboard, will it receive a charge? I know that Li-On batteries are managed but I do not know if there is still current flow through the induction coil after the battery is fully charged.

Any thoughts?

Strange external micro SD card problem with Moto X Pure 1575, please help!

Similar issue like in this post:

http://ift.tt/2cXliM1

But even worse. The external SD card suddenly vanishes from phone, now it only shows up shortly after phone re-starts, then the external SD card will disappear again. Don't know what's wrong. Then I put a new SD card, it happens like that after I used it for two days. The external SD card is used as portable storage.

When I tried to format the SD card when phone just started, it fails to do so, then it disappears.

I took both SD cards to Windows computer, they show up correctly and I can copy the files out from them. However, I cannot format them, they give out error: the exFAT card is writable protected. How a micro-SD card is locked for writing?

Tried to search online, but couldn't figure out how to solve the issue. It seems to me the phone has some issue with the card and changed the card somehow.

Can anyone help?

Thanks a lot!

Phone totally bricked (Unlocked / S-ON / DL Mode not working)

Hi guys.

This is my first thread as this is my last chance. I have my HTC for 4 weeks and everything was really well. It was on CM13 with TWRP 2.8.5.0 (95% sure).

Yesterday my phone turned off and after I turned it on again it stuck in bootloop (CM logo).
I tried to make a factory reset in TWRP but there's a problem with E: unable to mount /data and /cache.
I tried several things to repair it but i made things worse.
Now TWRP is starting as a recovery maybe every 6-8 time. Download mode is failing to boot.

So now I'm with bricked phone and I really need it for my work. Is there any chance to repair it? Or I need to prepare for expenses?

Thanks in advance for any help

What problems exist in mobile ad networks?

Hi!

Working with an advertising network should be pretty simple, right? You launch your app, set up an account with the network, do a little configuration and watch the money roll in. Far away from the truth

Let'stake a look at the main problems you can face if do not use mediation

1. The Newbie Learning Curve: Implementing many advertising networks, all with unique conditions, offerings and configurations creates a major learning curve for publishers. If you work with multiple applications and high traffic coming in, the problem multiplies ten-fold

2. Lack of Specialization in Multiple Markets: It is really difficult to be efficient in the global market. Many ad networks are strong in specific territories. One solution is know where are your users coming from

3. Low Fill Rates: The loss of impressions equals loss of profit. Many advertising networks are simply unable to offer high fill rates due to their limited audiences

4. The Advertiser Reigns Supreme: Publishers don't have the opportunity to negotiate for better bids. Once the advertiser makes a bid, the deal is done

To combat these problems, which is probably the biggest disadvantage of ad networks, publishers can focus on mediation solutions that enable them programmatically negotiate higher bids from buyers for each ad impression and let focusing on the most important, creating awesome apps

Have you tried ad mediation like Appodeal?

Camera app lags a lot

This is an unmodded phone, just to start off quickly. I take pretty good care of my phone. However, the camera app on this is super slow and frustrating.

When I activate the camera from sleep mode either by double tapping the volume key or use the lock screen camera icon, the app launches, but it takes anywhere from 10 - 15 seconds for the shutter button to be active and start taking photos. This is in all auto and manual modes.

I've missed a lot of moments that I couldn't capture, because I'm waiting for the app to do whatever it's doing and then start working. But even after the button is active, I press it and it stalls and then takes the photo. I've tried rebooting and even go through my phone for running apps that could possibly slow it down, but I just get general push notifications and emails. No heavy apps running in the background.

Any ideas how to get around, or resolve this issue?

Thank you.

Newsmy Carpad NU3001 CM13 ROM

Hi,
So as many of you already knew - I'm working on porting CM13 onto my NU3001.
I has it on my desk table, so I could work on it during my days. (I have another NR3001 installed in my car)
I already made some work for our unit SW. This is quick screenshots. Sources based on xdAuto and CM13. This is a very BETA and many things not working for now.on.

Why? : When I realize than CyanogenMod 13 (6.0.1) works on my Motorola XT1080 better than stock - I start thinking of porting CM13 to our device. And when I have spare set - I start porting.
How? : I took easiest way - try to do not modify kernel a lot, instead adopt bionic and other libraries for out 3.0.36+ kernel.
Currently working staff (it is very beginning):
1. Recovery TWRP 3.0.2
2. CM13 booting.
3. Graphics working (there is some blinking present).
4. Most of the rest is on the way (Wifi, BT, Bonovo apps)

Currently I have WIFI connecting, but no network, so I'm going to update our kernel little bit to match with CM13 (netfilter component mostly)
Once WIFI will work - I will publish sources, and continue work on it (without WIFI unit is mostly useless, and currently can't pass setup wizard)

Please do not spoof this thread with questions like "When?", I will try to post updates regularly in this message.
This thread created is mostly to exchange experience with this build once it is published (issues, TODOs, etc)

[TOOL] Ubuntu-Touch installer

Disclaimer/Requirements:

>> Only run on unlocked bootloader <<
>> TWRP 3.0 patched by st0rm77 as recovery <<
>> Scripts are released under GPlv2 license <<
>> Run at own risk <<

Hi,

I wrote a simple Ubuntu-Touch installer for the Meizu Pro 5. Its been tested on OTA-12 and OTA-13
but will probably work for any future version unless they change something.

Make sure you have the TWRP_3.0_m86_patched_st0rm77 recovery installed.
Only this version will backup the bootlogo and device tree.

Steps to install:

1. Make a backup of your device <-- ALWAYS
- select backup from TWRP
2. Install ubuntu-device-flash (for Windows/Mac users, run this inside a VM from Ubuntu 16.04 iso)
# sudo apt-get install ubuntu-device-flash
3. Open the folder ~/.cache/ubuntuimages and copy the following files onto your internal storage or sdcard:
- version-*.xz, custom-*.xz, device-*.xz and ubuntu-*.xz
- ubuntu-touch-installer*.zip (attached to this post)
4. Wipe your device
- select wipe > advanced wipe
- select Dalvik/Art, Cache, System, Data and >>swipe to wipe<<
5. Start your device in TWRP
- select install
- select ubuntu-touch-installer*.zip.

Wait until the installer finishes and reboot your device

Enjoy
