OnePlus 10 Pro vs Motorola Edge Plus (2022): Which phone to buy in the US?

Motorola has found great success selling more budget and mid-range devices as opposed to fully dipping its toes in the flagship space. They do, however, come up with some surprise flagship launches once in a while and that’s exactly what the Motorola Edge Plus (2022) really is. This particular phone is different from a lot of Motorola phones we’ve been seeing lately. We say that because it sports the latest flagship hardware, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and a 144Hz OLED display. There’s a lot to like about the Motorola Edge Plus (2022), but just how good is it when compared with some other flagships in its category? Well, that’s what we’re here to find. Let’s check out the OnePlus 10 Pro vs Motorola Edge Plus (2022) match-up to find out which phone is better to buy in 2022.

Design and Display

One of the main differences between the two phones in this comparison is the design. The Motorola Edge Plus (2022), as you can see, looks a lot like some other Motorola phones we’ve seen in the past. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you liked the overall look and feel of some of these older devices. It’s got a simple design with just the Motorola logo and the camera island at the back. You do get a frosted glass at the back, so it looks slightly more premium than, say, the last year’s model.

Motorola Edge Plus (2022) resting on a flat surface

The back of the Motorola Edge Plus doesn’t look as busy as the OnePlus 10 Pro with its “unique” camera island. A lot of people don’t like how the OnePlus 10 Pro looks, so we’ll leave it up to you to decide which one looks better. It is, however, worth pointing out that the OnePlus 10 Pro has an aluminum frame, whereas the Motorola Edge Plus has plastic ones. In fact, the OnePlus 10 Pro is better in terms of overall durability.

OnePlus 10 Pro feature image

The OnePlus 10 Pro sports Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and a Gorilla Glass 5 panel at the back. Meanwhile, Motorola is using Gorilla Glass 3 for the front panel and Gorilla Glass 5 for the back. The Motorola Edge Plus also only has IP52 for splash resistance instead of complete water resistance. Granted only the T-Mobile variants of the OnePlus 10 Pro have an official IP rating, but it’s still better than what Motorola offers. It’s also safe to assume that the non-T-Mobile units of the OnePlus 10 Pro will also hold up well against water and dust considering the overall build quality of the phones remains the same.

The overall dimensions of the phones are also largely identical as they both have the same height. The Motorola Edge Plus (2022), however, is a hair thinner and a few grams lighter than the OnePlus 10 Pro, so keep that in mind. Both phones are only available to purchase in two colors — the OnePlus 10 Pro can be purchased in Forest Emerald and Volcanic Black, whereas the Motorola Edge Plus (2022) comes in Cosmos Blue and Stardust White.

Front of Moto Edge Plus

Moving over to the display, you get a 6.7-inch screen on both phones. The OnePlus 10 Pro rocks a QHD+ display while the Motorola Edge Plus comes with an FHD+ panel. The OnePlus 10 Pro’s display also has higher peak brightness but it tops out at a 120Hz refresh rate whereas Motorola’s phone supports up to 144Hz. Both of them have an OLED panel with HDR10+ certification. You’re not going to notice a lot of difference between the two in terms of the quality, so you’ll have to consider whether you want more brightness or higher refresh rate support.

OnePlus 10 Pro in sandstone black case

Another main differentiator is the fact that the OnePlus 10 Pro’s display has curved edges whereas Motorola has opted for a flat panel. This once again comes down to your personal preference, but working with a flat panel is significantly easier as you don’t have to worry about accidental touches, or have any issues applying a screen protector, etc. Both phones have a punch-hole cutout on top of the display for the selfie camera, albeit at different spots.

Internal hardware and cameras

Both the OnePlus 10 Pro and the Motorola Edge Plus (2022) smartphones are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. You also get LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage to keep up with the demanding needs of the users in the flagship space. You’re not going to notice a lot of difference between the two phones in day-to-day usage, although your mileage may vary when it comes to benchmarking apps and while playing games. The OnePlus 10 Pro comes with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, but Motorola appears to be selling only the 512GB variant of the phone in the US right now. so no differences there. The base variant of both phones comes with 8GB of RAM, and you can’t add a microSD card on either of these devices.

oneplus 10 pro back camera array with phone on granite

Both smartphones run their custom UI that’s based on Android 12 out of the box. It’s OxygenOS in the case of OnePlus, and Moto’s My UX for the Motorola Edge Plus. Motorola’s software is cleaner and is hence easy and reliable to use. It’s quite close to the stock Android experience but Motorola has added some neat touches to improve the overall user experience. OnePlus’ OxygenOS, as you probably already know, is undergoing some major changes, with the new OxygenOS 13 looking similar to OPPO’s ColorOS software.

As for the batteries, you get a 5,000 mAh unit inside the OnePlus 10 Pro and a slightly smaller 4,800 mAh unit inside the Motorola Edge Plus. Both phones should be able to offer a similar battery backup, but the OnePlus 10 Pro will charge your phone faster when it runs out of juice. That’s because the OnePlus 10 Pro supports up to 80W wired charging (limited to 65W in North America) whereas the Motorola Edge Plus tops out at 30W. Notably, the OnePlus 10 Pro also supports faster wireless charging, so keep that in mind. One of the best things about both phones is that they come with a charger inside the box.

Photo of the phone's cameras

Moving to the optics, we’re looking at a triple camera setup on both devices. There’s a 48MP wide-angle camera on the OnePlus 10 Pro with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS. Additionally, you also get a 50MP ultra-wide camera with 150-degree FOV and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. In comparison, the Motorola Edge Plus (2022) sports a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture. It’s paired with a 50MP ultra-wide angle lens along with a 2MP depth sensor instead of a telephoto lens. You should be able to snap some decent-looking images out of both phones, but the OnePlus 10 Pro’s telephoto lens is going to prove a lot more useful. Not to mention, you also get the Hasselblad color calibration with the OnePlus 10 Pro.

We weren’t able to snap the same set of photos using both phones but we’ll leave some camera samples captured using both phones below to give you a better understanding of what to expect from each phone. As for the selfies, there’s a 32MP, f/2.2 shooter on the OnePlus 10 Pro, whereas the Motorola Edge Plus comes with a 60MP f/2.2 sensor. Motorola will let you capture 8K videos at up to 30fps as opposed to just 24fps on the OnePlus 10 Pro. You will, however, be able to record 4K footage at up to 120fps on the OnePlus 10 Pro, which is probably what matters more. The 4K footage will top out at 60fps on the Motorola Edge Plus.

OnePlus 10 Pro vs Motorola Edge Plus (2022): Which one should you buy?

Before we answer that question, it’s worth noting that Motorola only appears to be selling the 512GB variant of the phone with 8GB RAM right now in the US. The company is selling the same phone as the “Motorola Edge 30 Pro” in some other parts of the world, where you can get the other memory and storage configurations too. In the US, you can pick up the phone for $749, which makes it easy for us to recommend it now compared to its $1,000 price tag at launch. The OnePlus 10 Pro, on the other hand, starts at $799 for the base variant with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage. The 256GB variant of the OnePlus 10 Pro with 12GB of RAM will set you back by $869.

While you can expect the same level of performance and almost the same user experience from both smartphones in this comparison, we think the OnePlus 10 Pro is arguably the better phone. For an additional $50, you get a higher-resolution display and a slightly bigger battery that can charge significantly faster. The OnePlus 10 Pro also has a more potent camera system at the back as we think the telephoto lens is going to be more useful than the 2MP depth sensor on the Motorola Edge Plus. The OnePlus 10 Pro is also better overall in terms of build quality as it uses all the premium materials.

    OnePlus 10 Pro
The OnePlus 10 Pro offers a great set of hardware and continues to remain one of the best smartphones you can buy in 2022.

That’s not to say the Motorola Edge Plus is a bad phone, though. It offers great value for money, especially at $749 now for the variant with 512GB storage. If you’re not too particular about the things that we mentioned above, and you don’t want to spend the additional $50, then feel free to pick up the Motorola Edge Plus. You’re not going to miss out on much as it offers a pretty well-rounded experience overall for the price. You also get more reliable software with the Motorola phone, but you’ll only get two major Android OS updates for it as opposed to three major updates on the OnePlus 10 Pro.

    Motorola Edge Plus
Motorola's flagship phone for 2022 is great, especially now since it has come down the price ladder.

How to download Android 13 for Google Pixel and other Android devices

Get ready to dig into Android 13! Google has officially started the update rollout via stable channel. For lucky owners of the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 5a, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4, or Pixel 4 XL, you’ll be among the first users to see what Android 13 “Tiramisu” has to offer.

Alongside the supported Google Pixel devices, Android 13 is also available for a wide range of devices from different OEMs through Developer Preview programs.

Keep in mind that the preview builds won’t give you the full Android 13 experience as it’s very much a work-in-progress. Every pre-stable iteration is aimed solely at developers, since they need to test their apps against new Android platform APIs months before the next Android version becomes available for the general public. Installing the Developer Preview/Beta on your daily driver isn’t recommended, as you might face various system instabilities. Do back up your data before proceeding.

This page will serve as a one-stop download index for every Android 13 build released by Google. We will keep the page updated with the latest OTAs and factory images for the supported Pixel smartphones. You can learn how to install Android 13 on Google Pixel smartphones and other devices by visiting our dedicated guide.

Honor’s EU President talks about differentiating from Huawei, Magic OS 7, and their upcoming foldable

When Huawei sold off its sub-brand Honor in late 2020 to a consortium of buyers, it was welcome news to many phone fans. Not only did it mean that we get a new independent player in the smartphone scene, but there were hopes that Honor devices would regain access to Google Mobile Services, which had been stripped from all devices under the Huawei umbrella since mid-2019. And that was exactly what happened: Honor re-made its global debut in the summer of 2021 with the Magic 3 series, with a big marketing push about being an independent brand and having full Google support to boot.

Since then, Honor has released several more devices to the international market, with the latest, the Honor 70, getting a headline spot to open the IFA trade show in Berlin. “On the IFA stage for the first time since independence,” read the first sentence of the sub-title in the official Honor press release.

Honor and the Huawei influence

But there’s an elephant in the room: so far, despite proudly flaunting its independence, all of Honor’s devices, including and especially the smartphones, have looked and felt very similar to Huawei devices. What gives?

Honor EU president Tony Ran

Honor’s EU President, Tony Ran.

The answer, according to Honor’s EU President Tony Ran, is that Honor simply hasn’t been independent long enough.

“Yes, at this moment there are similarities in terms of design and user interface between [Honor and Huawei devices]. The process to develop a product, from initial design to reaching store shelves, could take two to three years,” says Ran during a media roundtable session in Berlin. “We are changing, but not as fast as you guys may expect.”

Honor’s Chief Marketing Officer of Europe, Clement Wong, chimes in: “Internally, we care more than anyone to make our products stand out from not just Huawei, but other vendors. But it’s a step-by-step process — to differentiate from a hardware perspective, it takes time due to the supply chain logistics and R&D investments required to build a new product.”

Magic OS 7.0

In fact, Wong promises the first sign of differentiation will come soon via the upcoming Magic OS 7.0 software that will launch in Q4 this year. “Magic OS 7.0 is a big leap from previous Honor software, it will look and feel totally different from Huawei devices.”

It is unknown currently if Magic OS 7.0 will launch alongside new hardware, but it is very likely, given Honor’s push to re-establish itself as a global consumer tech player after US sanctions had previously crippled the brand’s overseas growth. According to Ran and Wong, Honor hopes to make Europe the company’s “second home market,” behind, obviously, China.

This strategy will involve continuing to build relationships with carriers across Europe. “We already have major connections with [many] major European and UK carriers,” says Ran. “But there are some carriers that are a little conservative in choosing a new partner like us, so it’s a step-by-step process, and we’re working to establish our network partners.”

Honor CEO George Zhao teasing Magic OS 7.0 during IFA 2022.

Unlike Huawei’s consumer boss Richard Yu, who is notorious for making boisterous claims, Honor’s leaders seem to have more realistic, grounded targets. “We know it’s not going to happen overnight,” says Ran of establishing Honor as a major player in Europe. “It may be a five to ten-year process, but we’re committed to the goal of making Honor as big a name in Europe as we are in China.”

Ran says Honor may open physical stores around Europe like it already has in its home market of China, and some Asian regions like Singapore and Malaysia.

One more thing Honor hopes to do now that it is no longer just a “sub-brand” is to finally establish itself as a premium brand. “Previously, we were somewhat limited in what markets we could pursue,” says Wong. “We can now pursue products in the flagship space.”

Competing globally with foldables

The company had already started with the Honor Magic 4 Pro, which checks all the boxes a flagship phone should. But to stand out from the market, Honor will have to launch something new and different — and it’s coming. In Q1 of 2022, Honor will launch a new foldable phone that will sell outside of China. Unless other brands like Oppo or Google beat Honor to it later this year, Honor’s upcoming foldable will be the first large foldable phone with full GMS access to launch internationally, thus finally giving Samsung some much-needed global competition in the foldable space.

Honor EU president Tony Ran

Ran introducing the Honor 70 during Honor’s keynote at IFA 2022.

“We are ultimately a product company, and the best way to communicate with consumers is via products,” says Ran. “The most important direction of Honor is still to invest in, and build products.”

A new leak shows off Insta360’s X3 camera with large touchscreen display

Insta360 is scheduled to announce a new product in a couple of days. While there aren’t many hints on its website, a new leak has apparently given away the details of the announcement. If the leak is accurate, Insta360 will announce a successor to its One X2 360 camera dubbed the Insta360 X3.

Insta360 X3

According to WinFuture, the upcoming Insta360 X3 will feature roughly the same design as its predecessor, but the design will look a bit more streamlined. The one obvious major difference is its large vertical screen which measures in at 2.29-inches. Previous models opted for a circular display that was considerably smaller when compared to the new device. Despite this new look, apparently, the new model will still have a top-end recording resolution of 5.7K. But, there could be improvements when filming with a single sensor, going from 1440p to 4K resolution.

Additionally, the source states that images can now be captured up to 72MP, and time-lapses can be filmed in 8K resolution. As for other features, it looks like the Insta360 X3 will offer a similar feature to GoPro’s HindSight. The feature records constantly but only captures videos to the SD card when the shutter button is pressed. This allows users never to miss a moment no matter what. In addition, there should also be improvements to data transfer speeds by up to 50 percent, thanks to improvements in Wi-Fi technology.

Unfortunately, most of the meat of this leak lies within the images, as there are very few details about the actual specifications of the device. Once the details are revealed, it will be interesting to see how its latest camera compares to other devices in its lineup. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long as the announcement is set for September 8. Although there wasn’t pricing for the United States, the leak stated that pricing for the European market should come in at €539.99.

Design: The iPhone 11 is more colorful

Let’s start by design — (spoiler alert) the only round the iPhone 11 wins in this long battle. Though, worry not — no phones were harmed during this intense war. The iPhone 11 shines over the OnePlus 10T when it comes to three particular design aspects. First, you get to choose between six vibrant finishes instead of just two. So apart from Green and Black, you also get to choose between Yellow, Purple, Red, and White. Secondly, you get an aluminum build instead of a plastic one. This makes the iPhone both stronger and better-looking. Lastly, the rear camera system looks more minimalistic and not as obvious or out of place. The OnePlus 10T looks like a prototype that shouldn’t have gone on sale.

When it comes to the build, you should also consider water resistance. The OnePlus 10T only has an IP rating in North American markets. Even the IP-rated units of the OnePlus 10T aren’t as resistant as the iPhone 11. So if you tend to drop your smartphone in puddles frequently, you might want to consider the iPhone. Water damage can seriously affect your phone and how you use it. In fact, it could completely brick it and deem it worthless. Even if you buy the iPhone 11, see the IP rating as a Plan B — in case an accident occurs. Don’t intentionally submerge it in water on a frequent basis. Water resistance wears off with time and usage. So even if your phone is marketed as water resistant, it might not be so in a few months. Also, remember that Apple doesn’t cover water damage under its limited warranty. So there’s that, too.

Display: The OnePlus 10T is larger and sharper

Flipping the phones over, two gorgeous displays are revealed. Both feature an edge-to-edge design with very thin bezels. The most obvious visual difference between the two is the camera cutout. The OnePlus 10T has a hole punch while the iPhone 11 goes for a notch. I’m notch gonna decide which is less distracting — as that’s a mostly subjective matter. Some people prefer the little hole that floats in the middle of nowhere. Other users would rather have the notch that descends from the top of the screen.

Moving on to the display technicalities, that of the OnePlus 10T has a higher pixel resolution and supports the 120Hz refresh rate. So if you’re a heavy mobile gamer, you might notice the smoother animations on the Android phone. That’s not to mention that the iPhone 11 has a 6.1-inch display — which is smaller than the 6.7 inches that the OnePlus 10T offers. If you prefer smaller phones, then the iPhone might be for you. Though, the OnePlus 10T will provide a better display experience.

Performance: The Dragon swallows an Apple

The processors that power the OnePlus 10T and iPhone 11 were released around 3 years apart. So, it goes without saying that the Snapdragon chip defeats the A13 Bionic chip in all relevant performance and power efficiency tests. Additionally, the Android phone has double the RAM included in the iOS one. To be fair, iOS isn’t as memory-hungry as iOS. Though, either way, the OnePlus 10T still performs better than the iPhone 11.

Another important point to take into consideration is storage. The iPhone 11 only offers 64GB and 128GB variants — which are lacking when compared to the 128GB and 256GB of the OnePlus 10T. So unless you want the iOS phone for ecosystem purposes, it doesn’t make sense to buy the iPhone 11 in the performance department (and most other departments).

Cameras: The OnePlus 10T sees the light

Staring into the rear camera systems, it might seem like the OnePlus 10T has four lenses. In reality, it has three — Wide, Ultra Wide, and Macro. Meanwhile, the iPhone 11 only has a Wide and an Ultra Wide one. Those of OnePlus phones have a higher resolution than those the iPhone packs. Notably, there’s almost a three-year difference between the two devices — and that’s a lot in tech years. So expect the OnePlus 10T to outperform the iPhone 11 in the photography field.

iPhone 11

The front-facing camera of the OnePlus 10T has a higher resolution but a worse aperture when compared to that of the iPhone 11. However, the iPhone packs a TrueDepth camera system — which means you get 3D mapping capabilities and Face ID authentication. In terms of security, you get an under-display fingerprint reader on the OnePlus phone. If you’d rather use Face ID over a fingerprint scanner, then the iPhone 11 is the one to choose. If you’re aiming at better photography capabilities, then most certainly go for the OnePlus 10T.

Battery: Lightning-fast charging vs Lightning port charging

With both the OnePlus 10T and Apple iPhone 11 lasting a full day on a single charge with average use, let’s look into their charging speeds. The former phone supports 150W charging — allowing you to go from 0% to 100% in under 20 minutes. On the other hand, the latter device supports 20W charging, allowing you to reach 50% in around 30 minutes. So… you get the difference. That’s not to mention that the iPhone 11 has the inferior Lightning port, which is substituted by a USB Type-C one on the OnePlus 10T.

Bottom Line: Don’t buy the iPhone 11.

As our rounds reveal, the iPhone loses in almost all of them. There are three reasons for favoring the iPhone 11 over the OnePlus 10T:

  • You prefer its design and build.
  • You’re tightly connected to the Apple ecosystem, and an Android phone is a dealbreaker for you.
  • Your budget is too tight, and you’re not willing to pay around $150 more for the OnePlus 10T.

If none of the three reasons apply to you, then buying the iPhone 11 is a horrendous mistake. It’s a 2019 phone that is relatively overpriced when it comes to the internals it packs. The OnePlus 10T is more expensive, but it also has more to offer.

Personally, if I had to pick one of the two phones, I’d go for the iPhone 11. That’s not because it’s the better phone, though — it’s clearly not. However, I prefer its design and smaller build. I simply can’t imagine using a 6.7-inch phone on a daily basis. That’s not to mention that I’m also tightly tied to Apple’s ecosystem. So it simply doesn’t make sense for me to buy an Android phone that wouldn’t play as nicely with the rest of my devices — even if the Android phone is actually superior.

If you don’t actively depend on Apple’s tight ecosystem, then paying the extra $150 is definitely worth it. The OnePlus 10T has more recent and advanced hardware when compared to the iPhone 11. If you really don’t want to spend that much on a smartphone, then the iPhone 11 is not the right option to pick either. I’d consider looking for other alternatives that match your budget. Getting this ancient iPhone at this point isn’t a smart purchase.
