Google Maps’ new Nearby Traffic widget starts rolling out to users

Last week, Google talked about an upcoming Google Maps widget that would help users check real-time traffic predictions right on their homescreen. At the time, the company said that the widget would roll out to users “in the coming weeks,” but it seems like the widget has already started showing up for some users.

The new Nearby Traffic widget appears to be rolling out with Google Maps v11.35.1 (via Mishaal Rahman), which started rolling out via the Play Store yesterday. We can confirm that it’s available on all our devices running the latest update.

As you can see in the attached screenshots, the Nearby Traffic widget features rounded edges, and it’s 4 x 3 in size by default. But you can increase or decrease its size to accommodate it in your current homescreen layout.

Screenshot of Google Maps Nearby Traffic widget in the widget picker. Screenshot of Google Maps Nearby Traffic widget in small size. Screenshot of Google Maps Nearby Traffic widget in medium size. Screenshot of Google Maps Nearby Traffic widget in large size.

The Nearby Traffic widget shows your current location as a blue dot in the center, and its traffic map layer highlights the traffic conditions around you as green, orange, and red lines. A floating action button (FAB) with a magnifying glass icon resides in the bottom left corner, which lets you zoom in and out of the map. Next to it, you’ll find the Google logo. Although the Nearby Traffic widget shows the traffic conditions for a small area around your current location, you can tap on it to open Google Maps and view the traffic conditions in a wider area.

If you haven’t received the new Nearby Traffic widget on your device, you can try updating to the latest Google Maps release by following the Play Store link below. It should show up in the Widgets menu following the update. But, if it doesn’t, you might have to wait a few days for it to roll out to your device.

What do you think of the new Nearby Traffic widget? Will you use it to plan your daily commute? Let us know in the comments section below.

Motorola Edge 30 Lite render gives us our first look at the upcoming mid-ranger

In March this year, we first heard of Motorola’s plans to launch four Edge-series smartphones in 2022. At the time, renowned leaker Evan Blass revealed that the company would launch the Edge 30 Ultra, Edge 30, Edge 30 Lite, and a device codenamed Dubai+. Soon thereafter, Motorola confirmed this leak by launching the Moto Edge 30 in some regions. While the company is yet to release any information about the remaining devices, Blass has now shared an image of the upcoming Motorola Edge 30 Lite.

The image (via 91mobiles) gives us our first look at the affordable device. As you can see, it follows the same design language as the Motorola Edge 30. However, it features a textured back panel with a slightly different camera island in the top-left corner. The device appears to have a dual-camera setup on the back with text highlighting the 64MP primary shooter. Its volume rocker and power button reside on the right edge.

Leaked render of the Motorola Edge 30 Lite

Although the image doesn’t reveal everything about the device, previous leaks suggest that the Motorola Edge 30 Lite will pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 695 SoC, a 6.28-inch 120Hz POLED display, up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, along with a 4,020mAh battery. Blass further claims the device should hit the market “relatively soon,” along with the flagship Edge 30 Ultra.

For the unaware, the upcoming Motorola Edge 30 Ultra (codenamed Frontier) will reportedly feature a 200MP primary camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera. The device will sport a 6.67-inch FHD+ 144Hz OLED display and could pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chip. In addition, the Edge 30 Ultra will offer support for 120W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging. Motorola has already confirmed that it will unveil the device in China next month, and we expect the company to launch the Moto Edge 30 Lite with it.

Google has finally pulled the plug on Android Auto for Phone Screens for all users

In August last year, Google confirmed that it would kill off Android Auto for Phone Screens on Android 12. With the first stable Android 12 release, the company pulled the plug on Android Auto for Phone Screens on devices running Android 12. However, the company did not remove the feature for those still on older releases. Sadly, that is no longer the case, and Google has now finally shut down Android Auto for Phone Screens for all users.

According to a recent report from 9to5Google, Google started showing the following notification in Android Auto for Phone Screens earlier this month. But the company did not provide a specific date for the shutdown at the time.

Android Auto for phone screen will stop working soon

Google seems to have implemented the change this week, as users can no longer access Android Auto for Phone Screens on devices running Android 11 or older. Even if you have the app installed on your device, it will redirect you to the Android Auto settings page, which clearly states that the platform is now only available for car screens. The change reportedly started showing up for some users earlier this week, and it now seems to be live for all devices running older versions of Android.

Thankfully, Google already has a replacement for the feature — Google Assistant Driving Mode. First announced at I/O 2019, Google Assistant Driving Mode started rolling out widely last year and received a new homescreen UI in September 2021. If you’ve not tried it out so far, you can access it by simply asking the Assistant to “launch Driving Mode” or saying, “Hey Google, let’s drive.” Here’s what it looks like:

Google Assistant driving mode home screen without music playing Google Assistant driving mode navigation menu Google Assistant Driving Mode "For You" media suggestions Google Assistant driving mode with media playing

Google Assistant Driving Mode offers most of the core features found on the now-defunct Android Auto for Phone Screens.

Do you plan to switch to Google Assistant Driving Mode now that Android Auto for Phone Screens is no longer available for all users? Let us know in the comments section below.

OnePlus Nord 2 receives another Android 12 update, but still no June 2022 patches

The recent software updates for the OnePlus Nord 2 have left us scratching our heads, and it doesn’t look like OnePlus plans to make things less confusing for end-users anytime soon. Last week, OnePlus rolled out June 2022 security patches for the OnePlus Nord 2. However, it was an OxygenOS 11 build, even though OnePlus had already released OxygenOS 12 based on Android 12 to the device. OnePlus is now rolling out yet another software update for the affordable flagship, but it’s an OxygenOS 12.1 build that brings a few bug fixes but no June 2022 security patches.

According to user reports on the OnePlus Community Forums, OnePlus has started seeding OxygenOS C.05 for the OnePlus Nord 2. The update measures 359MB, and it’s a follow-up to the OxygenOS 12 Open Beta 2 release (OxygenOS C.04), which rolled out on the beta channel late last month. Unlike the previous build, however, OxygenOS C.05 is rolling out on the stable channel, and it brings the following changes:

  • System
    • [Fixed] the issue of abnormal pop-up in certain scenarios after pressing on Power-off key
    • [Fixed] the issue of abnormal interface caused by clicking the update notice of Bitmoji stickers
    • [Fixed] the issue that game icons displayed abnormally after being removed from Game Space
    • [Updated] Android security patch to 2022.05
  • Camera
    • [Fixed] the issue of abnormal crash
    • [Optimized] the power consumption of camera

As you can see, OxygenOS C.05 for the OnePlus Nord 2 is still on the May 2022 security patch level, even though OnePlus updated the device to the June 2022 security patch level with the previous OxygenOS 11 release. At the moment, we’re not sure why OnePlus has not updated the OxygenOS 12 release to the June 2022 security patch level. But we expect the company to share some details soon.

OnePlus Nord 2 XDA Forums

It’s worth noting that OxygenOS C.05 is currently rolling out to users in India who had updated their devices to the OxygenOS C.04 release. Those still on OxygenOS 11 might have to wait a while to get the latest update. Sadly, we don’t have access to the download links for the latest update to help you install it manually. We’ll add all relevant links to this post as soon as they become available.

Which firmware version are you running on your OnePlus Nord 2? Have you updated to OxygenOS 12 or are you still on the older OxygenOS 11 release? Let us know in the comments section below.

Apple Translate is rolling out support for Turkish, Dutch, and more to iOS 16 beta users

Apple revealed iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura during the main keynote of WWDC 2022. One of the notable features for users living in foreign countries is support for additional Apple Translate languages. The company has mentioned that these operating systems will start including Turkish, Thai, Vietnamese, Polish, Indonesian, and Dutch in its Translate app. Additionally, these language will work when using the system-wide translation feature. Initially, these languages were missing from the first developer betas — which the company seeded right after the keynote concluded. It seems like Apple is now rolling out the mentioned languages as a server-side change.

Apple Translate is rolling out support for Turkish, Dutch, and more to iOS 16 beta users Apple Translate is rolling out support for Turkish, Dutch, and more to iOS 16 beta users

We’ve discovered that Apple Translate has now started supporting Turkish, Thai, Polish, Indonesian, and Dutch. For the time being, Vietnamese remains missing from the app. As long as users are running iOS 16 beta 1, they should be able to see this change without installing a newer beta OS version. Interestingly, the Apple Translate app still lacks the new languages on iPadOS 16. However, they’re supported through the system-wide translation feature. In the Mac’s case, the new additions are completely absent on macOS Ventura developer beta 1 for now.

Apple Translate is objectively lacking when compared to Google’s solution. Nonetheless, the new language support is still a very welcome change. After all, Google has been working on its translation tool for a significantly longer time and has had the time to master and improve its accuracy. How precise the new languages in Apple Translate are remains to be seen.

Apart from this, iOS 16 introduces plenty of visual changes. These include an overhauled Lock Screen with widget and 3D wallpaper support. The operating system is currently in beta testing, and it should become available to the public this fall — potentially in mid September.

Do you use Apple Translate or Google’s equivalent, and why? Let us know in the comments section below.

The new MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus is the Dimensity 9000 with a faster prime core

In November last year, MediaTek debuted its first 4nm flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9000. The octa-core chipset featured an Arm Cortex-X2 prime core paired with three Cortex-A710 performance cores, four Cortex-A510 efficiency cores, and a Mali-G710 GPU. It also packed MediaTek’s 5th-gen AI processing unit (APU) and an 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP). The Dimensity 9000 offered significant performance improvements over MediaTek’s previous flagship chipset, but its successor, the new Dimensity 9000 Plus, seems to be a minor upgrade.

Following in Qualcomm’s footsteps, MediaTek today announced a mid-cycle refresh for its latest flagship chipset. But while the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 came with several noteworthy changes, the new Dimensity 9000 Plus is essentially the same chip with a higher clocked prime core. Check out the table below for a side-by-side comparison.

As you can see, MediaTek hasn’t introduced any noteworthy changes with the new Dimensity 9000 Plus. But that doesn’t necessarily mean the new chip won’t offer any real-world performance benefits. MediaTek claims that the new chip provides a 5% boost in CPU performance and 10% improvement in GPU performance compared to the Dimensity 9000, which should result in some real-world performance gains. But the difference may not be as noteworthy as it was between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1. We’ll make sure to put this to the test as soon as new phones featuring the Dimensity 9000 Plus hit the market.

MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus announcement infographic

Speaking of which, MediaTek says that devices featuring its latest flagship chipset will hit the market sometime in Q3 2022. The company is yet to share the names of the OEMs that will use the chips on their upcoming flagships. We don’t expect the list to be too long since the Dimensity 9000 hasn’t made an appearance on many devices either. So far, only OPPO and Vivo have launched phones featuring MediaTek’s previous flagship chipset, likely because most buyers still prefer Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets in the premium smartphone segment.

What do you think of the new MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus? Do you think it’s a welcome upgrade or do you feel that it’s just a marketing ploy to keep up with Qualcomm’s flagship offerings? Let us know in the comments section below.
