The new Samsung Wallet is a one-stop solution that lets you store IDs, cards, keys, and more

At its I/O developer conference this year, Google finally showcased the new and improved Google Wallet. The revamped wallet app combines the old Google Wallet app with Google Pay to give users a single comprehensive digital wallet that can store everything from digital tickets to IDs, credit and debit cards, gift cards, and more. Following in Google’s footsteps, Samsung has now combined its Samsung Pay and Samsung Pass apps into a similar comprehensive offering called Samsung Wallet.

Samsung says that Samsung Wallet is a new platform that helps Galaxy smartphone users organize digital keys, boarding passes, IDs, payment cards, and more in a single easy-to-use app secured by Samsung Knox. The company claims that the app also uses the open Galaxy ecosystem by integrating with Samsung Blockchain Wallet to help users easily monitor cryptocurrencies and SmartThings to unlock doors with digital keys. Currently, the Samsung Wallet app doesn’t offer support for official IDs, like driver’s licenses and student IDs, but Samsung will roll out the functionality later this year.

Talking about the new app, Jeanie Han, EVP and Head of Digital Life, MX Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “Samsung Wallet is bringing a new level of everyday convenience to mobile devices with a totally safe and secure environment for storing digital keys, cards, and more. As a part of our ongoing commitment to open ecosystems, we will continue to expand on the capabilities of Samsung Wallet by working closely with our trusted partners and developers.”

What can you store in the new Samsung Wallet app?

Samsung’s press release states that Galaxy users can store the following things in the Samsung Wallet app:

  • Payment cards
  • Loyalty and membership cards
  • Passwords
  • Digital Keys (both home and automobile)
  • Korean Air boarding passes
  • Digital IDs (coming later this year)
  • Monitor cryptocurrency portfolio via Samsung Blockchain Wallet

The fine print states that the availability of these features will vary by market and based on the Galaxy device you’re using. Sadly, the company has not gone into detail regarding the same.

Samsung Wallet app availability

At launch, the Samsung Wallet app will be available in six markets — France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US. Users in these regions can open the Samsung Pay or Samsung Pass apps on their eligible Galaxy devices and follow the prompts to update and migrate to the new wallet app. Alternatively, users can visit the Galaxy Store to install the app.

It’s worth reiterating that some of the features mentioned above may not be available in all regions for now. Another thing worth mentioning is that you’ll need a Samsung Pay-enabled Galaxy device running Android 9 Pie or later to use the new Samsung Wallet app. Additionally, some elements of the app require an embedded Secure Element-enabled (eSE-enabled) device.

We’ll update this post with more details on compatibility and availability as soon as we learn more.

What do you think of the new Samsung Wallet app? Would you use it over the Google Wallet app? Let us know in the comments section below.

Nothing Phone 1 shows off its party trick, an illuminating rear panel

Nothing has been trickle feeding its audience information for the past few months, giving up very little about its smartphone in the process. But that all changed yesterday when Nothing revealed an image of its upcoming smartphone, the Nothing Phone 1. With impeccable timing, a new video has appeared online, giving us a better look at the rear and its accompanying party trick.

YouTube channel Das kann was has uploaded a video of a Nothing event held in Switzerland. Of course, many people were in attendance, so this probably won’t be the last time you see or hear about this event. Despite the lack of information about the phone, the company did show off the freshly revealed rear of the device. The transparent back doesn’t really show us much of the phone’s internals, but the aesthetics look clean and modern. The video footage gives us our best look yet, and to be honest, it looks much better in the footage than in the recently released promotional images.

Nothing Phone 1 from a new video surfaced from an event in Switzerland

In addition to seeing more of the rear of the phone, it was also officially revealed that the phone would support illumination via LEDs. Nothing has teased this illumination feature for quite some time, giving us clues with some of its tweets, some going back as early as March. The firm continued to tease this feature with tweets like “Let there be light.” As a final hint, prior to the event, the team at Nothing released a video showing off the Phone 1 under a mosaic, with illumination on full display. Of course, because of the mosaic, it was hard to discern whether it was illuminating or simply reflecting light.

As much as has been shown, there is still one part of the puzzle that is missing when it comes to aesthetics. Carl Pei and the Nothing team have yet to show off what the front of the handset will look like. No doubt, keeping some things close to the vest for its upcoming event. Nothing will hold an event in London, where it is expected to debut the Nothing Phone 1 on July 12. The company seems to be marketing the phone based on its looks. Hopefully, this doesn’t backfire.

MacBook Air 15-inch model could arrive with Apple M2 and M2 Pro in 2023

Now that the dust has settled from WWDC 2022, it’s time for new rumors to start popping out from the Apple mill, giving us tidbits about what’s on the horizon from the Cupertino giant. Today, we get a few updates about the rumored 15-inch MacBook Air, set to arrive next year.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo took to Twitter today to update his initial report that went live in March. In his original tweet from a few months ago, Kuo stated that mass production of the new laptop would start in the last quarter of 2023. He also stated that despite the laptop’s larger size, Apple was looking to use its 30W charger to power it. Finally, Kuo stated that the new laptop might not even be called MacBook Air.

In his update, Kuo now states that the new 15-inch MacBook Air will go into mass production sometime during the first quarter of 2023, with a launch of the product coming during the second quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the new laptop might have two SoC options, an Apple M2 and M2 Pro. The M2 could arrive paired with the 35W charger, while the M2 Pro will come with a 67W adapter.  Lastly, Kuo stated that he has yet to hear anything from his sources about a 12-inch MacBook.

The 12-inch MacBook rumor made the rounds last week, in a report that Apple would be expanding its lineup in 2023 or 2024. As far as the 15-inch model, Apple had plans to debut a 15-inch MacBook Air this year but decided not to pursue it in favor of focusing on the MacBook Air (2022). Apple is still set on debuting updated models of its MacBook Pro 14 and MacBook Pro 16 later this year. The laptops will reportedly be powered by higher-end M2 chips, most likely debuting as the M2 Pro and M2 Max.

YouTube’s Corrections feature gives creators a new way to highlight errors in their videos

YouTube today introduced a new feature called “Corrections” to help creators easily highlight mistakes in their videos. The feature lets creators add information cards in the top-right corner of a video with relevant timestamps to list all corrections made to the video after it went live.

YouTube creators currently have to edit and re-upload a video if they wish to make any corrections. Alternatively, they can highlight the corrections in the video description or as a pinned comment. All of these options are less than ideal and have significant drawbacks. YouTube’s new Corrections feature offers a standard solution that makes life easy for creators and also helps viewers find all updates in one convenient location.

Left: View corrections info card; Right: Corrections examples

As mentioned earlier, the feature appears as a View corrections information card in the top-right corner of the video. It only shows up for the first correction in the video, and viewers can click on it to view more details and any subsequent corrections. All corrections will have a timestamp to help viewers quickly jump to the updated section of the video, along with some clarification text.

The Corrections feature will roll out to all YouTube creators by the end of this month. But the feature won’t be available if a channel has any active strikes or the content is inappropriate for some viewers. If you are a YouTube creator and would like to add corrections to your video, you can head over to YouTube’s support page for the feature and follow the instructions to get started. You can also check out the video embedded above to learn more about the feature.

What do you think of YouTube’s new Corrections feature? Would you want the information card to show up for all corrections? Let us know in the comments section below.

Google Stadia’s huge summer sale begins, nine new games to try before you buy

Those looking to pad out their Google Stadia libraries a little more will be pleased to know there’s a pretty huge summer sale on right now. It isn’t everything in the catalog, but it covers some big hitters, bundles, and add-on content.

The biggest discount you’ll find is 85%, but most are below that while still remaining sizeable. Having a quick browse through, here are some of our top picks:

That’s only a small selection from the absolute smorgasbord of deals on the Stadia Store. The good news is you don’t have to jump on the sale immediately, you get a few weeks. It currently looks like it’s running until July 6 at 8 a.m. BST/12 a.m Pacific. In addition to the games we’ve highlighted above, you’ll also find a ton of discounts on DLC for those and more games. For example, all of the Borderlands 3 additional content is also covered.

Personally, I’m definitely going to grab Elder Scrolls Online to finally try, it’s so cheap it’s impossible not to. Speaking of trying games…

Nine new free trials to play

Outriders on Google Stadia

Alongside the summer sale, Google has also added another nine titles to its trial program. These allow anyone, even new Stadia players, the chance to one-click play any of the supported games for a pre-determined time period. They’re all the actual beginnings of the games, so if you decide to buy, you can pick up where you left off. The latest nine include:

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Far Cry 6
  • Far Cry Primal
  • Outriders
  • Golf With Your Friends
  • Lake
  • Deliver Us the Moon
  • The Falconeer
  • Lumote: The Mastermote Chronicles
  • Through the Darkest of Times
  • Deathrun TV

Some of these titles, such as Deathrun TV, Lake and Deliver Us the Moon joined Stadia on June 1 and are also in Stadia Pro. One of the other standouts from this list is Outriders. With a major expansion coming soon, it’s a perfect time to try it out and it plays well on Stadia. It’s no surprise to see some Ubisoft titles in there, either, with the publisher one of the biggest supporters of Stadia.

There’s also a new Ubisoft title joining the library this week. Well, sort of. Discovery Tour: Viking Age is a standalone, combat-free experience based in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. If you have Valhalla, you have it, too.

Experience the world of Vikings in a map free of conflict or gameplay constraints with Discovery Tour: Viking Age Immerse yourself in the Viking Age as you roam throughout Norway, England, and the mythical realms of Jotunheim and Asgard. Relive history through stories with 8 major quests and discover 9th to 11th century Northern Europe. Interact with charismatic historical or fictional characters, including King Aelfred, shipbuilders, monks, and more!

New stuff is new stuff and combined with the sale and the June Stadia Pro games, it’s shaping up to be a busy month for Stadia players.

We could see a USB C port on the upcoming affordable iPad

The iPad is a great device for plenty of different tasks. Whether you’re looking for media consumption, gaming, reading, writing, or light working/studying — this versatile device can handle most average user tasks. Of course, it won’t replace many people’s laptops for the time being, especially power users’. However, it’s slowly transitioning from a stretched-out iPhone to a Mac-like product. This is especially apparent in iPadOS 16 — which supports resizable app windows on M1 iPads. While Apple has overhauled the higher-end models from the inside out in recent years, the affordable iPad remains neglected. Yes, it receives annual upgrades usually. However, it still features the classic ancient chassis from olden days and, of course, Cupertino’s beloved Lightning port. The good news we’ve all been waiting for is that Apple could be switching to USB C on the upcoming affordable iPad.

If the rumors are in fact accurate, Apple could stop selling iPad models with Lightning ports this fall. The affordable iPad is the only model that still settles for the inferior port. This makes sense, considering it costs $329. The company is clearly more focused on the higher-end versions — which tend to have more demanding, Pro customers.

Apart from ditching the Lightning port, the iPad 10 could go for a larger 10.5-inch display — a slight increase from 10.2 inches. This makes us believe that we might also see other design changes — including the potential retirement of the physical home button. Ultimately, even for an adorable device, the iPad 9 looks very outdated in our modern world. We certainly hope Apple follows the same design language it has applied on the iPad Air.

Lastly, the iPad 10 could pack the A14 Bionic chip — which powers the iPhone 12 lineup. While Apple has brought the M1 chip to the latest Air model, we certainly don’t see that happening on the affordable one anytime soon — if ever.

Do you plan on buying the affordable iPad 10? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments section below.

Indian government finally approves 5G spectrum auctions

The government of India has finally approved a proposal from the Department of Telecommunications for 5G spectrum auctions directly to enterprises, laying the foundation for upcoming 5G networks in the region. In an official statement, the government said it would auction a total of 72097.85 MHz of spectrum with a validity period of 20 years by the end of July 2022.

The 5G spectrum auction will include spectrum across various Low (600 MHz, 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz), Mid (3300 MHz), and High (26 GHz) frequency bands. The government expects telecom service providers to utilize the available Mid and High band spectrum to offer 5G-based services in the region.

The Indian government says that the 5G spectrum auction will reduce business costs for telecom service providers. It notes:

The spectrum auction will be benefitted by the Telecom Sector Reforms announced in September, 2021. The reforms include zero Spectrum Usage Charges (SUC) on the spectrum acquired in the upcoming auction, providing a significant relief to the service providers in terms of the operating cost of telecom networks. Further, the requirement of submitting a financial bank guarantee equivalent to one annual instalment has also been done away with.

In addition, the Union Cabinet has announced various reforms to facilitate ease of doing business. It has dropped the mandatory requirement for upfront payment by the successful bidder, giving them the option to make payments in 20 equal annual installments at the beginning of each year. The bidders will also have the option to surrender the spectrum after 10 years with no future liabilities.

According to the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) Notice Inviting Applications (NIA), bidders have until July 8 to submit their applications, after which the DoT will publish the ownership details of applicants on July 12. The final list of bidders will be released on July 20, with mock auctions to follow on July 22 and July 23. The actual auction will begin on July 26.

What does the 5G spectrum auction mean for the average Indian?

The upcoming 5G spectrum auction is just the first step towards mainstream 5G availability. The average Indian will still have to wait months, if not years, to get high-speed connections on their 5G smartphones. The successful bidders will likely start testing their 5G services over the next few months, and we might see limited public rollouts by year-end. A large-scale rollout should follow suit, but all of this is merely speculation for now.

There’s a chance telecom service providers will reveal a more concrete timeline following the auction. However, India’s three main carriers — Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio — have not shared any official information on the matter.
