How to download Android 13 for Google Pixel and other Android devices

Get ready to dig into Android 13! The next major release of Google’s OS is now available as a beta. For lucky owners of the Google Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 5a, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel 4a, Pixel 4, or Pixel 4 XL, you’ll be among the first users to see what Android 13 “Tiramisu” has to offer.

Alongside the supported Google Pixel devices, Android 13 is also available for a wide range of devices from different OEMs through Developer Preview programs.

Keep in mind that the preview builds won’t give you the full Android 13 experience as it’s very much a work-in-progress. The beta is aimed solely at developers, since they need to test their apps against new Android platform APIs months before the next Android version becomes available for the general public. Installing the Developer Preview/Beta on your daily driver isn’t recommended, as you might face various system instabilities. Do back up your data before proceeding.

Here’s an early look at the upcoming Nothing Phone 1

Nothing recently confirmed that it would launch its first smartphone — the Nothing Phone 1 — at an event in London on July 12. Soon after the announcement, the company started sharing teasers on Twitter, giving us glimpses of different parts of the device. The company has now finally shared a more complete picture, showcasing the Nothing Phone 1’s transparent back panel and rear-facing camera setup.

The following image from Nothing’s official Instagram gives us an early look at the Nothing Phone 1. As previously rumored, the device sports a transparent back panel. But it doesn’t really give us a good look at its internals as Nothing has covered everything up with textured panels to give the phone a more aesthetic appeal. The phone features a dual-camera setup in the top-left corner, housed within an understated pill-shaped camera island. It’s a far cry from some of the bolder camera module designs we’ve seen on recent smartphones from other OEMs.

Although the image doesn’t give us a look at the phone’s display, it does reveal that the phone packs a wireless charging coil on the back, a volume rocker on the left edge, and a power button on the right edge. Nothing’s website also reveals that the device is made with consciously chosen materials, but it doesn’t go into detail about the same. While the image doesn’t reveal much else, we expect Nothing to share more details in the weeks leading up to the launch.

Previous leaks and teasers have revealed that the Nothing Phone 1 will feature no chin at the bottom of the display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (presumably the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1), and wireless charging support. In terms of software, the device will run Nothing’s custom Android skin, called Nothing OS, based on Android 12.

The Nothing Phone 1 launches July 12 at 1600 BST/1100 EST/2030 IST.

You can preorder the new MacBook Pro M2 later this week

Apple revealed the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2022), along with macOS Ventura and iOS 16, during the main keynote of WWDC22. This new Mac packs the latest M2 chip — which brings speed and power efficiency improvements. Surprisingly, this MacBook Pro reintroduces the Touch Bar that Apple has removed on the notched MacBook Pro (2021) models. Unfortunately, though, it misses out on the chassis redesign we saw on the 14- and 16-inch variants last year. Ultimately, you can’t have it all when it comes to Apple products — sacrifices must be made.

Originally, Apple had stated that the MacBook Pro M2 would become available starting next month (alongside the overhauled MacBook Air M2). In an unexpected move, the company has just announced that you can actually preorder the M2 Pro model this Friday, June 17. It will start arriving to customers a week later, on June 24.

The bad news for those who have their eyes set on the MacBook Air M2 is that the online Apple Store still mentions that it’ll be available next month. Additionally, the latest newsroom post revolves around the MacBook Pro M2 only. It’s unclear at what point in July it’ll be available, as the Cupertino-based corporation hasn’t shared any official information regarding this particular matter yet.

The new MacBook Pro M2 packs some of the older technologies Apple has used on previous-gen models. These include a 720p FaceTime camera that saw a 1080p upgrade on the MacBook Air M2 model. Additionally, this latest Pro skips the MagSafe 3 charging port that has been re-added on recent MacBooks. Nonetheless, it’s reasonably priced and starts at $1,299 in the US. And — as you’d expect from Pro Macs — it’s only available in Space Gray and Silver finishes.

WhatsApp finally starts rolling out Android-to-iOS chat transfers

After years of users clamoring for the ability to transfer WhatsApp data from iPhones to Android and vice-versa, the Meta-owned messenger finally relented last year. However, it initially only allowed users to transfer chats from an iPhone to select Android devices. Earlier this year, we learned that WhatsApp was close to rolling out support for Android-to-iOS chat transfers. And now, WhatsApp users will finally be able to migrate their chat data from an Android device to an iPhone.

According to a recent post from Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook, WhatsApp is now adding support for Android-to-iOS data transfers. Currently, the feature is available in beta and lets users migrate their entire WhatsApp account, including chats, account information, profile photo, chat history, media, and settings, from Android to iOS. As you’d expect, WhatsApp is rolling out the feature gradually and it might be a while before it reaches all users. Nonetheless, it’s great to see WhatsApp finally making good on its promise.

As WhatsApp official documentation notes, there are a couple of limitations to the feature. First off, you’ll need Android 5.0 Lollipop or above installed on your Android device, while the iPhone should be on iOS 15.5 or later. The data migration feature also requires you to install the Move to iOS app on your Android device. Furthermore, you should be running WhatsApp for Android version 2.22.7.74 and WhatsApp for iOS version 2.22.10.70 or above for the feature to work.

For the feature to work as intended, your iPhone should be factory reset to pair with the Move to iOS app, both your devices should be connected to a power source, and they should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users

In February last year, Mozilla rolled out a new feature called Total Cookie Protection for its popular Firefox web browser. The feature allowed users to stop cookies from tracking them across the web by creating a separate cookie jar for every website. At launch, Mozilla restricted Total Cookie Protection to Firefox users with the Enhanced Tracking Protection mode enabled. With Firefox 89, the company extended the same protection to Private Browsing windows by default. And now, Firefox is finally rolling out Total Cookie Protection by default to all Firefox desktop users worldwide.

What is Total Cookie Protection in Firefox?

In case you missed our previous coverage, Firefox’s Total Cookie Protection feature compartmentalizes cookies for each website you visit. This prevents trackers from linking your activity across websites which, in turn, reduces the amount of information companies can gather about you.

As Mozilla explains:

“Total Cookie Protection works by creating a separate “cookie jar” for each website you visit. Instead of allowing trackers to link up your behavior on multiple sites, they just get to see behavior on individual sites. Any time a website, or third-party content embedded in a website, deposits a cookie in your browser, that cookie is confined to the cookie jar assigned to only that website. No other websites can reach into the cookie jars that don’t belong to them and find out what the other websites’ cookies know about you — giving you freedom from invasive ads and reducing the amount of information companies gather about you.”

In addition, Mozilla claims Total Cookie Protection covers a variety of other browser technologies that can be used for cross-site tracking. Furthermore, in order to ensure a smooth browsing experience, the feature can also make occasional exceptions to share cookies between websites when they are needed for cross-site logins or similar functionality.

Total Cookie Protection by default is rolling out to all Firefox users on Mac and Windows starting today.

How to migrate your WhatsApp data from iPhone to Android

WhatsApp is one of the most widely used instant messaging services all over the world. While it has improved over the years with new features and additions, one major caveat was the inability to transfer chats across platforms. WhatsApp does offer backup and restore functionality but it only works when switching from one Android to another, or one iPhone to another.

If you’re switching from an Android device to an iPhone or vice-versa, there was no official way to transfer your chat and media history from one phone to the other. Fortunately, that has now changed with WhatsApp’s official announcement at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 launch in October 2021.

For now, WhatsApp has rolled out the ability to transfer chats from an iPhone to an Android device. However, only the following devices are supported on the Android side:

• Samsung Galaxy smartphones
• Google Pixel smartphones
• Devices launching with Android 12 out of the box

The feature will hopefully be made available to all Android devices in the near future.

Here’s how you can transfer all your WhatsApp data, including chats and media, from your old iPhone to your new Android device.

While WhatsApp has published a support article with instructions to transfer WhatsApp data from your old iPhone to your new Android, we found that the steps mentioned in that article are inaccurate, and following them will not help you migrate your data. So we decided to make the process simpler for you by breaking down the steps we followed to successfully carry out the migration process.

We performed the migration from an iPhone 12 Pro to a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, the process should work on any Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel device running Android 10 and above, as well as on devices running Android 12 and above out of the box.

How to Transfer WhatsApp data from iPhone to Android

Before we begin, there are a few things to note here. The Android phone to which you want to transfer the data must be in a brand new state. This means it either needs to be just unboxed and not set up or if it’s a phone you’ve already been using, you’ll have to factory reset it. We tried performing the steps on a phone that was already set up and in use, but it failed to work. Once we wiped the phone, we were able to transfer the data.

You’ll also need a USB-C to lightning cable for this process to work since the transfer happens via a wired connection and not wirelessly. The last thing you’ll need is some patience since the transfer process is painfully slow. Depending on how large your WhatsApp data is, the process may take even up to an hour.

Now we have all this out of the way, let’s get to the steps:

• When your Android phone is in a brand new state, or once you’ve factory reset it, connect it to an iPhone via the USB-C to lightning cable. Keep this cable plugged into both phones until the entire process is completed.

• The iPhone will give you a pop-up asking if you want to Trust this Computer. Select Trust.

• Begin the setup process on the Android phone by agreeing to the terms and conditions and connect it to your Wi-Fi network.
• You’ll then see a screen asking if you want to transfer data from an existing device. Tap on yes, and the phone should now download the latest version of Smart Switch.

• Once Smart Switch has been launched, select Transfer from iPhone or iPad. You’ll now get an option to transfer WhatsApp chats from your iPhone accompanied by a QR code.

• Scan this QR code with your iPhone, or launch WhatsApp on your iPhone and navigate to Settings > Chats > Move Chats to Android.

• Tap on the option and your iPhone will start preparing your chats and other data to be transferred. Once done, it will ask you to continue on the new phone.
• On the Android device, you’ll now see the option to transfer other data from your iPhone like contacts, messages, photos, etc. You can select these options based on whether you want that data to be transferred to your new phone.

• Smart Switch will now ask you to install WhatsApp on the new phone to which you need to agree. You can also choose to install the other apps that were previously on your iPhone.
• Once you have performed these steps, the transfer process will begin. Depending on the data you’re transferring, this process may take anywhere between 30-60 minutes.

• After the setup is complete, open WhatsApp on your Android device and log in with the same phone number that was used to log into WhatsApp on your iPhone.

• When you log in, you should see the prompt asking you whether you want to transfer your chat history from the iPhone.

• Select Start and the transfer should take place in a few minutes.
• You’ll now have all your chats, images, videos, audio files, and just about everything from WhatsApp on your iPhone transferred to your Android device.

You have now successfully migrated your WhatsApp data from your iPhone to your new Android device!

You can install the rest of your apps and transfer any other data you may need and continue to use the phone. The chat transfer process for WhatsApp is slightly complex and involves a lot of work and time, but hopefully, it gets more seamless once the feature is rolled out to all Android devices.
