Does the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 run Linux? Can you install it?

The ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 is Lenovo’s most mainstream business laptop for 2022, and it comes with a few features that make it very appealing for that market. Compared to last year’s model, the biggest improvement is arguably the display, now featuring a taller 16:10 aspect ratio that’s fantastic for productivity. Of course, there are also more powerful processors, a better webcam, and more. Like most laptops out there, the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 runs Windows 11 out of the box, but what if you want to use Linux instead? Well, there’s good and bad news.

The bad news is that, unlike some of Lenovo’s other business laptops, you don’t get the option to buy the ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 with Linux installed out of the box. Laptops like the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 give you that option, but not this one. The good news is that doesn’t mean you can’t run Linux at all. In fact, running Linux apps on Windows is a possibility now, which is potentially very exciting.

Using the Windows Subsystem for Linux

With Windows 10 – and subsequently, Windows 11 – Microsoft added something called the Windows Subsystem for Linux. This essentially made it possible to run Linux distributions inside Windows, and you can easily install Ubuntu, Kali Linux, and other Linux distributions from the Microsoft Store. To do this, you’ll need to enable the Windows Subsystem for Linux optional feature, which you can do by searching for Turn Windows features on or off in the Start menu. Alternatively, you can install the Windows Subsystem for Linux Preview from the Microsoft Store, which might actually be easier.

Once you have enabled this feature (it will require a reboot) and installed your preferred Linux distribution, you can use all kinds of Linux apps with it. Initially, it was only possible to run CLI-based apps, but with Windows 11, you can actually run GUI apps, too. The OS itself is still text-based, so you won’t see the typical Linux desktop, but the apps you run can have a graphical interface, and they open right alongside your Windows apps.

Linux apps running on Windows 11

We’d say this is the best way to run Linux apps on Windows because you don’t have to take any risks tinkering with your current OS install or managing partitions. It’s risk-free and easy to set up-

Installing Linux on the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3

If you really want to switch to get the full Linux experience, you have that option, which you can do in one of two ways. The most risk-free method is using a virtual machine (VM), which emulates your chosen Linux distribution inside of Windows. This may sound similar to the Windows Subsystem for Linux, but it actually gives you the full Linux desktop for the distribution you want, and you get a more cohesive experience with your Linux apps. You can use the Hyper-V feature built into Windows 11 Pro or use a program like VMware Workstation Player, then download the ISO file for your preferred Linux distribution, such as Ubuntu. We already have a guide on how to create a Windows 11 VM, and the process is generally similar if you want to create a Linux VM, too.

Screenshots of Windows and Ubuntu side by side

If you want to run Linux at full native performance or switch away from Windows altogether, things are a bit trickier, but it’s certainly possible. The Linux community thankfully does a great job of ensuring most devices work well with Linux, and it’s relatively easy to obtain drivers for your laptop so everything is in working order. If you’re just wanting to try Linux without getting rid of Windows altogether, we have a guide on how to dual-boot Linux and Windows 11 on the same PC so you can use your preferred OS at any time. If, after doing this, you want to make Linux your only OS, you can always delete the Windows partition (make sure to back up your data) so you just have a Linux PC.

One thing to note with this is that you won’t be able to get support from Lenovo for any problems with Linux. The laptop isn’t sold with Linux, and it’s not supported because of it. If you want to install Linux that bad, you probably know your way around a PC already, and there’s a good chance you can figure things out, but it’s something to keep in mind.

And that’s all you need to know about whether you can run Linux on the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3. While we think most users will probably be just fine running Linux apps on Windows 11, there are also valid reasons to make a full switch to Linux, so you have that option. You may be taking some risks by doing so, but the possibility is there.

You can buy the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 below, though only the Intel-powered models are available at writing time. If you’re interested in laptops that are available with Linux, you may want to check out some of the other ThinkPads Lenovo makes, since some of them are available with Ubuntu out of the box. Acer Swift 3 (2022) vs Acer Aspire 5: Performance

Acer’s new Swift 3 2022 models, as you can see, are powered by Intel’s new 12th gen Core processors. This is potentially one of the biggest upgrades found in the new Acer Swift 3 models. The new Intel chip, in case you don’t know, has a mix of performance (P) and efficient (E) cores. The new chips have more cores and threads, in general, bringing a significant performance uplift over the previous generation.

Another interesting thing about the new Acer Swift 3 is that all models are now using chips from Intel’s 12th gen P-series. That means they have a higher TDP of 28W compared to the 15W we saw in the previous generation. Acer could’ve used the low-powered U-series chips for these notebooks, but we’re glad to see more powerful chips at play here. This will result in significant performance improvement. You can check out our Intel Alder Lake P-series vs U-series chip comparison to find out about the differences between these lineups.

Intel Core P-series chips

The Acer Aspire 5, on the other hand, is available with Intel’s new 12th Alder Lake U-series mobile chips. It’s worth pointing out that Acer has only listed a handful of variants on its website for now, so there’s a good chance we’ll see more in the near future. It’s also worth mentioning that you’ll find a lot of variants that are powered by relatively older Intel and AMD chips including the 11th gen Tiger Lake processors and Ryzen 3000 and 4000 series too. We recommend buying only the newer Aspire 5 variants that are powered by Intel’s new Alder Lake chips. Acer is yet to confirm whether or not it’ll be using the new AMD Ryzen 6000 processors, so we might have to wait longer.

As we mentioned in the specifications sheet above, you’ll find some Aspire 5 units powered by the Alder Lake U-series chips. These variants, however, may not be as powerful as the Acer Swift 3 (2022) models powered by the P-series chips. This is because the U-series processors have a lower TDP compared to the P-series units. We’ll have more to talk about the performance difference in detail once we get a chance to compare these laptops side-by-side.

Moving on to the memory, we’re looking at up to 16GB of LPDDR4X memory on the Acer Swift 3 (2022). Intel’s new chips support DDR5/LPDDR5 memory, but Acer has decided to stick to LPDDR4X, perhaps to keep the overall price of the notebook low. The new Aspire 5 models are available with up to 16GB DDR4 SDRAM. All the new models listed on the Acer website with the new 12th gen Intel processors have 16GB RAM by default, and it remains to be seen if some of them will have an option to configure them with less memory to save some money. The available options, however, are limited to just DDR4, so keep that in mind.

The Acer Swift 3 (2022) is also a clear winner when it comes to storage. You can get the new Swift 3 with up to 2TB of PCIe NVMe SSD, whereas the Aspire 5 only comes with up to 512GB PCIe SSD. You can, however, add an optional HDD to get more storage on the Aspire 5, but it’s not going to be nearly as fast as the M.2 drive inside the Swift 3.

Lastly, before we move on to the other section of this comparison, it’s worth mentioning that we expect the Swift 3 (2022) to have better battery life. According to Acer, it’s using a 56Whr battery for the Acer Swift 3 (2022) models, which it says should be enough for up to 10.5 hours of usage. Based on the laptops we’ve reviewed in the past, it’s safe to say that you’ll at least get up to 7 hours of usage on a single charge. Your mileage is bound to vary based on the workload, though. The company hasn’t mentioned the exact battery capacity for the Aspire 5 models but it says it’ll last for up to 7 hours on a single charge. If Acer is using the same 56Whr battery inside the Aspire 5, then this will have slightly better battery life thanks to the low-powered U-series processors.

Display

The Acer Swift 3 (2022) notebook comes with two display options — a 14-inch FHD or a 14-inch QHD IPS panel. Both displays have an aspect ratio of 16:9 and use the same display technology, so the resolution is pretty much the only difference. If we were to pick one, then we’d go with the 1080p panel because that’s more than enough for a display this small. We’ve seen some other 14-inch notebooks with taller aspect ratios, although there’s no such option with the Acer Swift 3 (2022).

The Aspire 5 laptop, on the other hand, is available to purchase with a few display options. You can get it with either a 14-inch, a 15.6-inch, or even a 17.3-inch display. All these displays, however, have the same 1080p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The only real difference between them is the physical size, so be sure to pick the one that suits your use case. Notably, the new models of the Aspire 5 powered by the 12th gen Alder Lake chips have a 14-inch display.

Acer Aspire 5 laptop

Both laptops have webcams on top of the display, which is the ideal spot for a webcam. However, the Acer Swift 3 (2022) models have a higher resolution camera. We’re looking at a 1080p camera on all Acer Swift 3 2022 models. The Aspire 5 listing doesn’t explicitly mention if it’s using a new 1080p camera for the webcam, so we’ll have to speculate a bit here. If Acer decides to use the same webcam for the new models, then we’ll be looking at 720p HD cameras. Higher resolution doesn’t always translate to better quality, but the Acer Swift 3 camera also supports features such as temporal noise reduction for better quality overall. It’s hard to tell which one’s better in terms of the overall quality, but the Acer Swift 3 (2022) definitely has a better webcam, at least on paper.

That being said, both laptops lack IR support which means you can’t use them for Windows Hello facial recognition. The Acer Swift 3 is better in this regard because it at least comes with a fingerprint scanner for authentication. Since there’s no mention of biometric authentication support on the Aspire 5 notebook, we’re inclined to believe that even the new Aspire 5 models doesn’t support them.

Design & ports

The Acer Swift 3 (2022) comes in three fun colors — Safari Gold, Snow Blue, and Pure Silver. You can check out all three color options in the image below. They all look great but we think the Snow Blue variant in particular looks refresh and more appealing. Acer hasn’t mentioned the material used for the chassis, although we think it’s made out of magnesium alloy, just like the older models. More premium materials are usually reserved for more expensive notebooks like the Swift X. Acer Swift 3 in three color options

The Acer Aspire 5 also has a very similar form factor, but its chassis seems a bit more dated. You get black-colored keycaps on the keyboard regardless of the color option you pick, and the displays have huge bezels around them too. The new Acer Swift 3 is definitely the better-looking machine overall.

If you look at the dimensions in the specification sheet above, you’ll notice that the Acer Swift 3 is both thinner and more compact than the Aspire 5. The Swift 3 is also slightly lighter coming in at just 1.25kg as opposed to the 1.76kg starting weight of the Aspire 5.

Acer Swift 3 ports

Acer Swift 3 (2022) ports selection

When it comes to the ports selection, however, the Aspire 5 is arguably better. You only get two Thunderbolt 4 (USB Type-C) and two USB Type-A ports along with an HDMI port and a headphone jack on the Swift 3. The Aspire 5 gives you a single USB Type-C port, up to three USB Type-A ports, an HDMI, an ethernet port, and a 3,5mm headphone jack. It’s worth mentioning that the USB-C port on the AMD variant of the laptop doesn’t support Thunderbolt because, well, Thunderbolt is an Intel technology.

Acer Aspire 5 ports

Acer Aspire 5 ports selection

We think the Aspire 5 laptop scores brownie points for adding an ethernet port, but you’re only getting a single USB-C port as opposed to two on the Swift 3. The lack of an ethernet port isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker but definitely something to consider. As for connectivity, you get WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2 with the Swift 3 whereas you only get WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 with the Aspire 5.

Which one should you buy?

All things considered, we think it’s safe to say that the new Acer Swift 3 beats the Aspire 5 in more ways than one. For starters, the Aspire 5 is running Intel’s new Alder Lake U-series chips and not the P-series processors like the Swift 3 (2022). While the U-series chips will make the Aspire 5 more power-efficient, they’re also going to lack on the performance front. Intel’s 12th gen P-series processors inside the Swift 3 are going to perform better even if it comes at a cost of slightly less battery life. We suggest you wait a little bit longer to see if Acer announces more models of the Aspire 5 notebooks with Intel’s Alder Lake P-series chips or AMD’s new Ryzen 6000 series processors.

Besides that, the Swift 3 is also more compact and lighter than the Aspire 5. Not to mention, the Swift 3, being the new machine, also looks better overall, thanks to the fun new color options that are available. And despite the compact form factor, the Swift 3 has a decent selection of ports with the lack of an ethernet port when compared to Aspire 5.

The Acer Swift 3 (2022) beats the Aspire 5, but you can’t ignore the fact that the Aspire 5 costs $200 less for its base variant. The Aspire 5 is just a good budget laptop that comes with a few compromises to keep the price low. You can definitely buy the Acer Swift 3 if you don’t have any budget constraints, but we think it might be worth waiting out for more Aspire 5 models to come out and see how much they cost. The Acer Swift 3 (2022) isn’t going on sale until June, so there’s still time to consider. We’ll add links to buy both laptops once they’re available to purchase.

In the meantime, you can also check out our collection of the best Acer laptops to see if you want to buy something else instead of waiting. Or, you can also check out our round-up of the best laptops to find more options from other manufacturers.

Your Nest Hub is about to get cozy with Google Fit and Fitbit information

With Google I/O on the horizon, owners of a Google Nest Hub that are also into fitness look to be getting some good news. Spotted by 9to5Googlea new support page has appeared for the Nest Hub that details integrations with both Google Fit and Fitbit. Just in time for that new Pixel Watch that’s leaked eight ways to Sunday. It doesn’t seem to be live yet but you would expect it isn’t too far away.

Currently, if you have the second generation Nest Hub you can view sleep statistics on the display, but this could potentially provide the same feature and more to those who prefer wearables or have an older model. However, the support page is currently listed as only for the second generation model. It does sound like a pretty tight integration, though.

Activity metrics like number of steps and calories burned from Google Fit or Fitbit can be shown on your Nest display.

The support page details the setup process, which will involve linking either Google Fit or Fitbit through the Wellness menu in the Google Home app settings. From here you’ll be able to see steps, calories burned, and other activity metrics on the display. As will anyone else who looks at it if you enable personal results.

This integration with Fitbit, in particular, would be a step ahead of the already excellent integration with the Google Nest Hub’s main competitor, the Amazon Echo. The Fitbit skill on the Echo is very good, but it doesn’t do anything special with the display on the Echo Show. Likewise, with the new Pixel Watch on the way, you would expect some element of fitness focus. Integrating it into the Nest Hub like this is just another piece of the ecosystem puzzle.

Google has some dedicated sessions coming at I/O for what’s next with Google Home, so it seems like a good fit that this and other potential new features could be revealed during the conference. Google I/O takes place on May 11 and 12 and is available online for anyone to attend.

Google’s “Pixel Fold” reportedly coming in Q4 2022

We’ve been hearing about a potential “Pixel Fold” for quite a long time now. Android 12L introduced a few changes tailored specifically for tablets and foldable smartphones, and it seemed that with Google Tensor, Google was finally beginning to take its hardware seriously. However, all of that seemed to dissipate when Ross Young from the Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) stated in November of last year that the project was dead. It seems the device may be back on track though, as he’s now tweeted more information about what to expect from its display — and even when it may launch.

The biggest takeaway from Young’s tweet is that Google’s “Pixel Fold” foldable handset should arrive in Q4 of 2022. Its launch could potentially be soon after the release of Android 13, with the platform update having been shown to offer better support for foldable devices. Even better is its rumored price point, which has been reported to be much lower than its competitors at $1400. That would make it $400 less than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, $400 more than the Galaxy Z Flip 3, but $800 more than the cheapest Google Pixel 6.

Not only did Young offer insight on Google’s upcoming foldable smartphone, but Samsung’s as well. He states that both devices will have similar-sized inner displays and the main differentiating factor will be their outer displays. Google’s foldable handset will apparently have a smaller outer display coming in at 5.8-inches, whereas Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 will come in at 6.19-inches.

Despite Google’s handset having a smaller display, it will potentially have a wider aspect ratio, possibly similar to the OPPO Find N. The outer display found on Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a common sticking point, as its slimness makes it hard to use at times.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 could arrive with larger external display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G was a breakthrough device for Samsung, and for several reasons. The fact that it’s foldable will obviously draw eyes, but what’s more, it packed flagship specifications while also being a lot more affordable than other folding devices. In fact, this was a foldable handset’s lowest price point to date. Now we’re getting closer to a successor, we’re hearing some potentially encouraging news with regards to its external display.

According to Ross Young, who has his finger on the pulse of the display industry, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 will come with a larger external display. The current Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G external display is a vast improvement over the original Galaxy Z Flip, but it still left much to be desired with its 1.9-inch size. Typically, these displays are used for basic information dissemination, such as notifications, the time, or basic phone interactions like answering a phone call.

Bigger display, battery, and production volume

If Young’s sources are accurate, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 will arrive with a 2-inch external display at least, though it could be bigger. Unfortunately, Young does not go as far as to specifically say how large of a display it is. It could be a small or vast improvement, but something is usually better than nothing. There’s not a whole lot that we know about the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 aside from that, except that it should arrive with slightly larger battery. Hopefully, Samsung keeps the external fingerprint reader for its Galaxy Z Flip 4.

With a slated release date sometime in Q3 2022, it will be some time before we get to see it in action. But if the rumored production volume is to be believed, you can bet that Samsung is gearing up to have an excellent launch of its next foldable smartphone.

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is one of the best fitness trackers out there. Even if you’re not interested in the heath-related features, this wearable still can do a lot more than just that. For example, if your iPhone runs out of battery, you can still independently use your Apple Watch to listen to Spotify or Apple Music. This makes the watch a perfect companion when you want to go out for a jog without carrying your phone with you. You can simply use it to track your outdoor workout and listen to music on the go. Now you must be wondering: How do I connect my earphones to this tiny screen? Well, whether you want to pair small Bluetooth earphones or a large speaker to your Apple Watch, the process is the same. Here are the steps you need to follow to turn the Apple Watch into your personal DJ.

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch 1

  • Launch the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
  • Scroll down.

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch 2

  • Click on the Bluetooth section.
  • Make sure that Bluetooth is actually turned on, obviously.
  • Ensure that your Bluetooth earphones or speakers are next to your Apple Watch and in pairing mode.

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch 3

  • The Bluetooth earphones/speaker’s name should appear on the list of available devices.
  • Click on its name.

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch 4

  • Give it time to connect.

How to pair Bluetooth earphones to the Apple Watch 5

  • Voila! You can now launch the audio app of your choice on the Apple Watch. It will then use the Bluetooth device as an audio output.

    Apple Watch Series 7
The Apple Watch Series 7 improves the winning formula with a bigger screen, fast charging, and enhanced durability.

Personally, I always use this feature when my iPhone is running out of charge and I’m on the go. This allows me to preserve my phone’s battery for the tasks that the Apple Watch can’t execute. It’s worth mentioning, too, that if you have AirPods, then pairing them to your iPhone will automatically link them to your Apple Watch as well. So this method is only for pairing non-Apple Bluetooth earphones with the Apple Watch. It also comes in handy when you want to leave your iPhone behind since your Apple Watch can handle both your music and fitness tracking needs without needing you to lug your phone in your pocket.

Do you leave your iPhone behind when going out for a jog? Let us know in the comments section below.

Telegram Premium beta goes live on iOS, offers exclusive stickers and reactions

Telegram is one of the most feature-packed instant messaging apps out there. Since its inception, Telegram’s funding has largely come out of the pocket of Pavel Durov, the founder of the service. But as the service continues to amass new users and climbs new heights of success, the start-up is now looking for ways to monetize the platform. Last year, Telegram started testing Sponsored Messages (read advertisements) in public channels with more than 1000 subscribers. Now the company appears to be readying another monetization tool that may soon ask users to pay to unlock additional features.

Telegram recently rolled out version 8.7.2 beta on iOS, and it introduces a new subscription plan called Telegram Premium. The subscription will give users access to premium stickers and unlock exclusive reactions. Telegram hasn’t shared more details about the new program, including its pricing and exact availability.

Telegram Premium reactions Telegram Premium stickers Telegram on iOS with a blue button at the bottom asking users to subscribe to Telegram Premium Telegram Premium banner

At the time being, Telegram Premium is exclusive to the iOS app, but it will likely expand to Android too once the wider rollout ensues. Android Police notes that premium stickers won’t be visible to free users in conversations. Instead, they will see a banner telling them to “unlock additional reactions by subscribing to Telegram Premium.”

Telegram’s subscription plan looks similar to Discord’s paid offering, which gives users perks like custom animated emoji, additional personalization features, and bigger uploads.

As mentioned already, Telegram hasn’t fully detailed the Premium plan. However, we expect to hear more from the company about its new subscription program soon. iOS users can try out Telegram v8.7.2 beta using TestFlight.

Telegram recently picked up a big update, introducing several new features such as custom notification sounds, custom mute durations, an auto-delete menu in profiles, and more.

What are your thoughts about Telegram Premium? Do you see yourself paying a monthly fee for perks like exclusive stickers and reactions? Let us know in the comments below.
