Samsung’s next big event will be at Mobile World Congress

Samsung’s last major product announcement event was just one week ago, on February 9, but the company is seemingly gearing up for another event. Samsung announced on Wednesday that it will have another event later this month, at this year’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain.

The company said in a press release, “Samsung Electronics is once again redefining the future of how we work and how we learn. Join the Samsung Galaxy Mobile World Congress (MWC) Event 2022 on February 27 to see how Samsung is leading the connected experience. The event will be streamed on Samsung’s YouTube channel beginning at 7:00 p.m. CET.”

Samsung also shared the above animation teaser, which depicts an unidentified laptop opening, along with various phones, tablets, and watches flying around. The phones appear to be simplified drawings of the Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, and Galaxy S22 Ultra, while the tablet might be the Tab S8 Ultra (a webcam is visible along the right edge).

It’s likely that Samsung will reveal new laptops at the event — not just because there’s a laptop in the animation, but also because the Galaxy Book Pro lineup was released around this time last year and is due for an update. The rumor mill also indicates Samsung started production of an updated Galaxy Book series earlier this month, internally named “Venus2” and “Mars2.”

We probably won’t see new phone announcements at MWC, as Samsung usually saves those for Galaxy Unpacked events. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Fold 3 were released in August of last year, alongside the Galaxy Watch 4 series, so none of those devices are due for an upgrade just yet. There’s a small chance we might see the Galaxy A53, considering there have been many leaks for that phone recently, but we’ll have to wait and see.

NVIDIA Shield TV update patches Plex media server issues and other bugs

Last month, NVIDIA officially released Shield Experience 9.0.0 to all of its TV devices — including the original 2015 model. This update bumped the Android TV version to 11 and added support for the next generation of GeForce NOW cloud gaming in 4K HDR. However, just like most major software updates, it introduced several bugs that have been affecting various functionalities. Fortunately, though, the company has now released Shield Experience 9.0.1, which patches plenty of these bugs — including the Plex media server issues.

NVIDIA has shared on its forums that Shield Experience 9.0.1 is now available for all of its TV users. It addresses several of the reported issues, including a storage permission bug that was affecting some apps, in addition to the stutter when playing interlaced content. The company has provided a full change log of what’s included in this update:

Google Docs get summaries and pageless formatting as part of “smart canvas”

Last year, Google introduced smart canvas, a new product experience for Google Workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides. At the time, Google debuted several new features for Google Docs, including new smart chips for recommended people, files, and meetings. As part of its push to create a more integrated and cohesive collaboration experience, the company is bringing some new smart canvas features to Google Docs.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Google announced two new smart canvas features for Google Docs: summaries and a pageless format for documents. When you open a Google Doc, you’ll see a summary appear on the left side, providing a broad overview of the contents. Summaries are generated automatically, but you can edit them and even create your own.

Summaries in Docs provide a brief overview of the main points in a document, so you can quickly parse the information that matters and prioritize where to focus.

Google Docs is also getting pageless formatting for documents. This format removes the boundaries of a page to make it easier to collaborate on documents when dealing with wide tables, large images. You can easily switch back to the paginated view if you want to print or convert the document to PDF.

“With our new pageless format in Docs, you’ll be able to remove the boundaries of a page to create a surface that expands to whatever device or screen you’re using, making it easier to work with wide tables, large images, or detailed feedback in comments,” wrote Google in a blog post dating May 2021.

Pageless formatting and summaries are now available to all Google Workspace customers, as well as legacy G Suite Basic and Business customers. Meanwhile, automatically-generated summary suggestions will be available to Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Frontline, and Nonprofits users.

Google Home for iOS gets Android TV remote with latest update

Google rolled out a new virtual remote feature to the Google TV app back in September last year. The feature made its way over to the Google Home app for Android in November, giving users who don’t use the Google TV app access to a virtual remote for their Android TV and Google TV devices. Sadly, the feature didn’t make it to the Google Home app for iOS at the time. But Google has now started rolling it out for iPhone users.

The latest update for the Google Home app (v 2.48) brings the Android TV remote feature to iOS. According to the iOS release notes (via 9to5Google), the remote feature will roll out to users over the next few days. Once you get the update on your device, you’ll be able to access the remote feature by tapping on your Android TV/Google TV device on the app’s home screen, which should bring up an “Open remote” button at the bottom of the screen.

Tapping on the “Open remote” button will bring up the remote interface and you’ll be able to pair your Android TV/Google TV device using a six-digit code that will appear on your TV screen. The remote will then give you access to a trackpad and a D-Pad to navigate across the UI, and it will even bring up a keyboard icon in the top right corner whenever you select a text field.

Along with the remote feature, Google Home v2.48 brings some small visual tweaks for the Google WiFi usage stats. The updated UI moves the download and upload speed stats to the bottom corners of each graph and increases the text size for improved readability. The design refresh also rearranges various buttons across the UI.

Realme 9 Pro

The Reame 9 Pro is a direct successor to the last year’s Realme 8 Pro. It brings a range of upgrades across the board, including a higher refresh rate display, 5G support, a bigger battery, and more. It packs a 6.95-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Under the hood, the phone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 SoC, paired with up to 8GB RAM and 128GB UFS 2.2 storage. While the Snapdragon 695 may feel like a downgrade over the Snapdragon 720G on paper, it’s actually a better chipset overall, offering slightly better CPU and GPU performance, along with improved efficiency.

The triple camera system of the Realme 9 Pro is headlined by a 64MP primary shooter, accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide shooter and a 2MP macro shooter. A 5,000mAh battery keeps the show running, which is a step up from the 4,500mAh battery on last year’s model. However, the charging speed has been reduced to 33W from 50W.

Realme 9 Pro Plus

The Realme 9 Pro Plus offers a slightly better hardware package. It features a smaller 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. It opts for the MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset, unlike the Pro model, which has a Snapdragon SoC. On the back, it has a 50MP Sony IMX766 main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP macro lens. The Realme 9 Pro Plus has a smaller 4,500mAh battery but supports a faster 60W charging speed.

The Realme 9 Pro Plus offers heart rate monitoring through the in-display fingerprint scanner and has a vapor cooling chamber to keep thermals in check.

The Realme 9 Pro series runs Realme 2.0 based on Android 11 out of the box. Realme promises two years of OS updates, which means the phones should get the upcoming Android 13 update.

Pricing & Availability

The Realme 9 Pro starts at ₹17,999 for the 6GB/128GB model and goes up to ₹20,999 for the top variant. Meanwhile, the Realme 9 Pro Plus comes in three variants and will be available at the following prices:

• 6GB+128GB: ₹24,999
• 8GB + 128GB: ₹26,999
• 8GB + 256GB: ₹28,999

The Realme 9 Pro will go on sale from February 23, while the Realme 9 Pro Plus will hit the shelves on February 21. Both phones will be available on Flipkart, realme.com, and select offline retailers.

OnePlus Nord 2 receives Feb 2022 security patches with latest update

After rolling out OxygenOS builds with the Android security patches for January 2022 to the flagship OnePlus 9 series and a couple of OnePlus Nord devices last month, OnePlus has now started rolling out February 2022 patches to its devices. The OnePlus Nord 2 is the first device from the company’s growing smartphone lineup to receive the latest security patches.

According to a recent post on the OnePlus community forums, OnePlus Nord 2 users in India have already started receiving the OxygenOS A.17 update. The update brings the Android security patches for February 2022 to the mid-range device, but it doesn’t include any other features or changes. Here’s the complete OxygenOS A.17 changelog for the OnePlus Nord 2:

As with all OxygenOS updates, the latest firmware release for the OnePlus Nord 2 will roll out in a phased manner. This means that it will reach a small fraction of Nord 2 users at first, with a broader rollout to follow in the coming days.

In case you haven’t received the update already, you can download the firmware package from the links below and install it manually. But we don’t recommend doing so if you’re using your Nord 2 as a daily driver and don’t want to deal with the bugs that might be present in the initial release. If you plan on installing the update manually irrespective of the risks, make sure you check the current firmware build on your device and download the corresponding incremental update package.

Sony’s strange-looking LinkBuds are now official

Following multiple leaks, Sony’s strange-looking LinkBuds are now officially out. If you don’t like the tight seal created by earbuds with silicone tips, these might be for you.

The Sony LinkBuds WFL-900 (via The Verge) have a unique “Open Ring Design” that looks nothing like we have seen before. The buds have a big hole in the center, allowing outside sound to easily pass through. Thanks to their open design, the buds don’t enter too deep into your ear canal; they have silicone “Arcs” that help them stay securely in your ears. The LinkBuds feature 12mm, ring-shaped drivers, paired with the V1 processor and Sony’s Digital Sound Enhancement Engine (DSEE) upscaling technology. They miss out on the LDAC codec support, so you’re limited to lossy SBC and AAC codecs.

Unlike other open-design earbuds, like the Galaxy Buds Live, Sony’s LinkBuds don’t have ANC. This is a good move as it’s near impossible to achieve effective ANC with the open design and also kind of defeats the purpose of open earphones in the first place. The Sony 1000XM4 remains our top pick if ANC is important to you.

The LinkBuds WFL-900 have a unique gesture system. Instead of touching the bud, you can tap in front of your ear to skip tracks, adjust volume, play/pause, etc. They also have a Speak-to-Chat feature that automatically pauses music playback as soon as you start speaking to someone.

The Sony LinkBuds offer up to 5.5 hours of continuous listening time. The charging case holds an additional 12 hours of battery life. The buds are IPX4 rated for sweat and splash resistance. They also offer Google Fast Pair support on Android devices and Swift Pair on Windows. However, there’s no Bluetooth multipoint, and wireless charging support is also missing.
