Wallpaper-based dynamic theming could make its way to more Android 12 devices soon

Google may soon require all Android OEMs that ship devices with Google Mobile Services to offer users a Material You-style dynamic theming system. The company is reportedly looking to make this mandatory for Android phones and tablets that ship with Android 12 or are getting an Android 12 update.

According to Android Police, a reliable source with access to internal Google documentation has revealed that the company will require all new Android 12-based software builds submitted for Google Mobile Services (GMS) approval to feature a dynamic theming engine. This change will reportedly go into effect on March 14. The source further reveals that Google has laid down some guidelines for the dynamic theming engine to help OEMs implement a consistent solution.

As per these guidelines, the dynamic theming engine should be able to use a single source color to generate five tonal palettes (each comprising of 13 colors) that can adapt on the fly, three access palettes, and two neutral, much like the Material You dynamic theming system on Pixel devices. The consistency will help third-party developers who wish to add dynamic theming support to their apps.

Since Google’s Monet theming engine will go open source with Android 12L, OEMs will likely implement it on their custom Android skins instead of developing their own theming engine. As Mishaal Rahman points out, several OEMs, including Xiaomi and Motorola, have already started implementing Monet in their Android 12-based updates and we expect the others to follow soon. It’s worth noting that while Samsung’s One UI 4 update also features a dynamic theming system, Android Police notes that it is not powered by Monet.

Irrespective of whether OEMs choose to implement Monet or not, you should expect more devices to offer dynamic theming support soon. This might further give third-party developers enough incentive to bring dynamic theming support to their apps. Vivo T1 launched in India with a 120Hz display and Snapdragon 695

Vivo today introduced a new smartphone series in India called Vivo T. The first smartphone to launch under the new series is the Vivo T1, a budget-friendly offering that packs a good-looking design and competitive hardware. With a 120Hz high-refresh rate display, Snapdragon 695 SoC, and capable camera setup, the Vivo T1 looks like it can give some serious competition to the Redmi Note 11 series.

The Vivo T1 sports a 6.58-inch FHD+ LCD panel with a 12oHz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate. Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 695 SoC, paired with 4GB/6GB/8GB RAM and 128GB storage.

The phone has a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of a 50MP primary shooter and two 2MP depth and macro lenses. Powering all things up is a large 5,000mAh battery that charges via a rather slow 18W charger.

On the software side, the Vivo T1 runs Foutouch OS 12 based on Android 12. Elsewhere, the phone comes with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 5G support, Bluetooth 5.1, and dual-band Wi-Fi.

Pricing & Availability

The Vivo T1 starts at ₹15,990 for the base 4GB/128GB model. The 6GB/128GB model is priced at ₹16,990, while the top model (8GB/128GB) will set you back ₹19,990. The phone will be available for purchase starting Feb 14 from Flipkart, Vivo stores, and select offline retailers.

Redmi launches two more Redmi Note 11 series devices, a fitness band, and a smart TV in India

After launching the Redmi Note 11 and Redmi Note 11S in international markets earlier this year, Xiaomi has now brought the phone to Indian shores. Along with the two new Redmi Note 11 series devices, the company has launched the Redmi Smart Band Pro, and Redmi Smart TV X43 in the region. Here’s a quick overview of the new Redmi devices.

Redmi Note 11 & Redmi Note 11S

The new Redmi Note 11 and Redmi Note 11S are, fortunately, the same devices that launched in some international markets earlier this year. The regular Redmi Note 11 features a 90Hz FHD+ AMOLED display, Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 680 chip, a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support, and a 50MP quad-camera setup on the back.

The Redmi Note 11S, on the other hand, is a MediaTek-based device, and it features the mid-range Helio G96 SoC. Like the vanilla model, the Redmi Note 11S features a 90Hz FHD+ AMOLED display and a 5,000mAh battery with 33W fast charging support, but it comes with a better 108MP quad-camera setup. The Redmi Note 11 will go on sale in India starting February 11. It will be available in three RAM/storage configurations, with the 4GB+64GB model priced at ₹13,499, the 6GB+64GB model priced at ₹14,499, and the 6GB+128GB model priced at ₹15,999. The Redmi Note 11S will go on sale starting February 21 and it will also be available in three RAM/storage configurations. The base 6GB+64GB model will be available for ₹16,499, while the 6GB+128GB and 8GB+128GB models will be priced at ₹17,499 and ₹18,499, respectively. Both devices will be available through Xiaomi’s website, Amazon.in, and offline retail stores.

Redmi Smart Band Pro

The new Redmi Smart Band Pro is an affordable fitness tracker that packs a rectangular AMOLED display with Always-On display support, over 110 workout modes (including 3 auto-detected modes and 14 water fitness modes), SpO2 tracking, and more.

The Redmi Smart Band Pro will be available for purchase in India starting February 14. The fitness band is priced at ₹3,999 and it will be available through Xiaomi’s website, Amazon.in, and offline retail stores.

Redmi Smart TV X43

The Redmi Smart TV X43 is the latest addition to Redmi’s affordable Smart TV X Series. As its name suggests, it’s the smallest of the bunch and features a 43-inch 4K HDR panel. It runs Xiaomi’s PatchWall 4 based on Android TV 10.

Twitch for Android may soon let you edit stream schedules right from your smartphone

Twitch is a leading video live streaming service that caters to gamers, musicians, and content creators. Twitch also has an Android client that lets you stream mobile games straight from your smartphones. However, if you’re a creator and used the Twitch Android app, you probably know it’s currently not possible to edit stream schedules using the mobile app. But that could be changing soon.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Twitch for Android recently picked up an update to version 12.3.0 on the beta channel. The latest APK contains strings of code that suggest the app may soon let you edit stream schedules right from your smartphone.

Twitch allows you to set up schedules on your profile page, so viewers know when you usually stream. Currently, you can only create and edit stream schedules from the desktop. But it appears that the ability to edit schedules is coming to the Android app. From what we can gather, when you navigate to My Channel > Schedule on the mobile app, you’ll see an edit button next to your schedules. According to text strings, it appears users will be able to edit details like time and date for each stream, modify stream titles, change categories, and so on. However, it appears users won’t be able to delete a schedule or create a new one from the mobile app. For that, you’ll still have to visit the desktop site.

The ability to edit stream schedules isn’t live in the latest version of the Twitch app. We don’t know when the company plans to roll out this feature to the public. It’s also unclear whether this functionality will be coming to the iOS app or remain restricted to the Android client.

You can now change your Signal phone number without losing chat data

Privacy-focused messaging app Signal is undoubtedly one of the best messaging apps out there and, with its latest update, it’s getting even better. The update introduces a new feature that lets you change the phone number connected to your account without deleting your chat data. The feature is rolling out with the latest update for the app, and here’s how you can use it.

How to change your Signal phone number without losing chat data

According to a recent blog post, Signal’s new Change Number feature is rolling out with version 5.30.6 of the app on Android and version 5.27.1 on iOS. If you’ve received this update already, you should be able to change the phone number connected to your Signal account without losing any chat data. However, as highlighted in this Signal support page, you’ll need to ensure a couple of things for the feature to work as intended.

Change number is supported if you can send and receive Signal messages on the phone with your old number or have access to the same phone on which Signal was previously installed. But you won’t be able to use the feature if you can’t send and receive Signal messages with your old number, do not have access to your old device, or have already cleared your phone. In case Change Number is supported, you can then follow these steps to change the number:

• Head over to the Signal Account settings on your phone and tap on the new Change Phone Number option.
• Select continue.
• Enter your old number in the first field and your new number in the second field.
• Select Continue or Done.
• Confirm the new number is entered correctly. If not, tap on Edit Number to fix it.
• Select Change Number.
• Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the registration process for the new number.

Once that’s done, you should be able to continue using Signal with your new phone number, and your chat messages won’t be deleted. It’s worth noting that when you change your phone number, your contacts will see an alert in your chat that your phone number has changed.

It’s also worth mentioning that if someone registers on Signal with your old phone number, they won’t have access to your message history. Signal will also alert you of a safety number change if they start messaging with your old number.

MIUI 13: New Features and Performance Improvements

MIUI 13 brings several performance improvements over the previous release — MIUI 12.5. Xiaomi claims that the latest version of its custom Android skin offers better app fluency with 15% fewer dropped frames in third-party applications when compared to the previous release. Xiaomi’s native apps also run better on the new release, with 23% fewer dropped frames.

Xiaomi claims that MIUI 13 ranks at the top in Master Lu’s fluency test, beating Android skins from other OEMs on devices across all price points. Xiaomi has also improved the multitasking capabilities on MIUI 13, and the software now lets you have up to 14 apps open in the background on a flagship device at any given time.

Xiaomi has also worked on making MIUI 13 more secure for the end-users with new features like face verification protection, privacy watermark, and fraud protection. At the moment, we don’t have the complete details for all these features. However, we do know that the privacy watermark feature will let you add a watermark to images that you share to prevent misuse.

New privacy and security features

The fraud protection feature, on the other hand, consists of a couple of different measures to protect users from online and telecom frauds, like “E-fraud warning,” “Official logo,” Fraud application installation interception,” and “Transfer protection.”

MiSans font

As mentioned earlier, MIUI 13 also includes a new system font called MiSans. It’s a flat and minimal font with rich Opentype features, like automatically adjusting the height of hyphens to uppercase and lowercase letters. The font is free to download for both personal and commercial use.

MIUI 13 live wallpapers

Furthermore, MIUI 13 comes with a host of new live wallpapers that showcase crystal formation. Xiaomi says that these wallpapers were captured using a polarization microscope via 8K timelapse photography. We’ll make sure to share these new wallpapers with you as soon as the first build of MIUI 13 starts rolling out to devices.

MIUI 13 widgets

In addition, MIUI 13 also includes support for a bunch of new widgets, like “Super Countdown Day” and “Water Measuring Cup”. The company only gave us a glimpse of these new widgets during the launch event, but we expect to learn more details in the coming days.

MIUI 13 Pad

Along with MIUI 13 for smartphones, Xiaomi also announced MIUI 13 Pad during today’s launch event. MIUI 13 Pad is an optimized version of Xiaomi’s Android skin for large-screen devices. It brings some additional features to help users make the most of the extra screen real estate. Xiaomi has also worked with developers to optimize apps for this new tablet interface and the company claims that over 3000 apps have already been adapted for large screens.

Along with all the new features mentioned above, MIUI 13 Pad includes a few additional features to improve the multitasking experience on large-screen devices. These include features like a new shortcut to quickly switch between full screen and windowed modes, window scaling, a global taskbar with drag and drop support for multitasking, and more. MIUI 13 Pad also offers support for a bunch of keyboard shortcuts to enhance productivity.

OPPO Find X5 5G and Find X5 Lite fully detailed in a massive leak

Last week, a massive leak revealed pretty much everything about the OPPO Find X5 Pro, including its renders and full specifications. Now a fresh leak has fully detailed the other two models in the Find X5 series: the Find X5 5G and Find X5 Lite.

WinFuture has published high-quality renders, and complete specifications of the regular OPPO Find X5 5G and Find X5 Lite. Starting with the regular model, it retains the overall design of the Find X5 Pro, packing a curved, hole-punch display on the front and a squircle camera module on the back, as shown in the images below.

The phone reportedly features a 6.55-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The display offers 10-bit color depth and HDR and is protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass Victus. Unlike the Pro model, which is said to pack the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, the regular model will be opting for the last year’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, paired with 8GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 flash storage. As far as cameras are concerned, the Find X5 5G is said to come equipped with a 50MP primary shooter, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 13MP telephoto lens. The phone’s 4,800mAh battery supports fast charging via an 80W charger and wireless charging support is also reportedly on board.

Meanwhile, the OPPO Find X5 Lite will be the most affordable option in the lineup. In terms of the design, it looks identical to the upcoming OnePlus Nord CE 2.

 

According to WinFuture, the Find X5 Lite will feature a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, MediaTek Dimensity 900 SoC, up to 8GB RAM and 256GB flash storage, 64MP + 8MP + 2MP triple cameras, and a 4,500mAh battery with 65W fast charging support. Unlike the Pro and regular model, the Find X5 Lite retains the 3.5mm audio jack. Finally, we’re told the phone will run ColorOS 12.1 based on Android 12 out-of-the-box.

OPPO hasn’t officially confirmed an official launch date for the Find X5 series, but we expect to hear from the company soon.
