Apple might still collect a commission from developers, even if they don’t use its payment system

You’re probably aware of the fact that Apple charges developers a 15-30% commission fee for using its billing system. This affects all in-app purchases of third-party apps published on the App Store. Epic Games sued Apple for that, and the Cupertino giant was ordered to allow competing payment platforms. A legal filing has revealed that Apple may be planning to charge the commission anyway. So, potentially, Apple could land a piece of the pie from any purchase initiated from an iOS app — even if users complete it on the web.

As 9to5Mac reports, a legal filing has revealed that Apple might be considering charging a commission fee for all purchases initiated from iOS apps. In this case, even if users buy or subscribe to digital goods on a website, the iPhone manufacturer would still get a cut if the link was clicked in an app. In the Epic Games lawsuit, the judge ordered Apple to allow other payment methods by December 9. That’s a week from today, and so far nothing hints at the tech giant changing any of its guidelines. The company has stated that its current guidelines already comply with what the judge has ordered.

Google has announced a similar policy for its Play Store. The company will be charging developers 11% if they use their own payment systems — only 4% less than using Google’s. We will have to wait and see if Apple will actually implement this or not. The legal filing only hints at a potential change, but it doesn’t confirm any future plans regarding the matter.

Steam for Chromebooks might finally be coming soon

Chromebooks are great for working and are typically affordable, lightweight, and have good battery life. Chrome OS has just enough functionality for most people but when it comes to gaming, they falter. Steam is one of the most popular gaming platforms on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and even if you have one of the best Chromebooks, you still won’t really be able to play any games. There are certainly workarounds to run Steam on your Chromebook right now if you really want to, but it’s not as good as native support. That might finally be set to change.

According to a merged commit made to the Chromium Gerrit (spotted by Android Police), native Steam for Chrome OS could arrive as soon as this month. Steam support for Chrome OS has been codenamed “Borealis”, and while we’ve known that Valve has wanted to launch Steam on Chrome OS since early last year, we haven’t heard a huge amount more since then. Now Android Police says that flags have been added to what will be Chrome OS 98 — and that should arrive as a Canary build any day now.

Steam on Chrome OS would reportedly be enabled by Chrome OS’ Linux compatibility. It’s possible to run the Steam Linux client on Chrome OS using Crostini, but official support would provide users with a much-improved experience. It appears that Google is dedicated to providing a good gaming experience on Chrome OS, as the company has more recently has been spotted preparing a new “Game Mode” for the platform too.

Android Police also spotted a commit that suggests that there will be a game compatibility reporting system with Proton. Proton is a compatibility layer (spearheaded by Valve) that allows Windows-based games to run on Linux-based operating systems. It’s based on Wine and integrates into the Steam client on Linux-based machines.

Either way, this is a much better way to play games on your Chromebook than the solutions currently available. The most viable that Chromebook gaming has been was when GeForce NOW with Steam Sync support came to the platform late last year, and even that requires a stable and fast internet connection — not to mention a subscription.

The 3995WX can single-handedly outperform dual-socket Intel systems that come with up to 56 cores. Well, that’s not really a surprise considering AMD’s been leading the workstation CPU space for quite some time now. The 3995WX is very similar to the Threadripper 3990X but there are some features that you simply can’t ignore. The Threadripper Pro 3995WX brings eight DDR4-3200 memory channels to life, which means we’re looking at a significantly higher memory throughout the quad-channel options. Intel’s Xeon W models top out at DDR4-2933, so there’s that too.

AMD has also bumped the max memory capacity up to 2TB in systems that support up to two DIMMs per channel. This is also a huge bump over AMD’s own consumer models that only support up to 256GB. Notably, AMD has also increased the PCIe 4.0 support from 72 lanes with the standard Threadripper models to a whopping 128 lanes on the Pro models. This makes it very desirable for professional users looking to take advantage of the high-performance PCIe peripherals. Just to put things into perspective, you can connect up to four Nvidia Quadro GPUs in a single-socket chassis, which is incredible.

It’s, however, worth pointing out that this particular CPU demands special attention. The ‘WX’ suffix denotes that it’s a professional workstation chip that drops into specialized single-socket WRX80 motherboards featuring the sWRX8 socket. The supported motherboards are some of the expensive ones you can find on the market right now as they tend to offer a robust power delivery system capable of handling the raw power of these monstrous CPUs. The 280W AMD Threadripper Pro 3995WX features a max frequency of over 4.0 GHz. You’re also looking at a higher base frequency of 2.7 GHz, which is higher than EPYC’s maximum of 2.25 GHz for a 64-core processor.

Overall, the AMD Threadripper 3995WX is one of the best high-performance workstation-grade CPUs you can buy on the market right now. Nothing comes to the performance of this CPU in the single-socket ecosystem, really. That being said, most users are better off buying either the Ryzen 9 5900X or the Ryzen 9 5950X that fall under the mainstream CPU category. They’re not nearly as expensive as the Threadripper and they don’t demand a high platform-entry cost either.

Even after the arrival of Intel’s new Alder Lake CPUs, we think the existing lineup of AMD CPUs have a lot to offer. Microsoft Edge now says Chrome “is so 2008” if you try to download it

Microsoft has arguably gone too far already with forcing its new Edge browser on users by making it harder to switch your default browser on Windows 11, as well as blocking apps that redirect certain Windows links to your favorite browser. But it turns out things can always get worse, as Microsoft’s browser is now actively insulting Google Chrome if you try to download it using Edge. As reported by Neowin, when you open the download page for Chrome in Microsoft Edge Canary, you may now be greeted with a message saying “that browser is so 2008”. The message naturally urges you to keep using Edge, and there’s no obvious way to dismiss it, either.

In fact, there are two different messages you may see, with another one simply saying that Edge runs on the same technology as Chrome “with the added trust of Microsoft”. We weren’t able to get these messages to appear on our end, but you can see them below.

It’s only natural that Microsoft believes its browser is better than the competition, but it could easily be argued that this behavior is user-hostile. Microsoft already tries to prevent users from downloading competing browser if you use Bing to search for any other browser, with a huge chunk of the page taken up by an ad banner for Edge. This extra attempt, in addition to the other controversial moves by Microsoft we mentioned above, seems somewhat desperate. In fairness to Microsoft, Google is also known for heavily advertising its Chrome browser on its own webpages, but it doesn’t go to the same lengths Microsoft has gone to.

At the same time, Microsoft has been bundling features that are unnecessary at best with the Edge browser.  Recently, the company added a “Buy now, pay later” feature to the browser, which could potentially encourage users to spend more money than they have.  This has been the target of significant backlash, and it could end up driving some users away.

We can only hope that these messages are removed from Edge as quickly as possible, but the fact remains that they were pushed to users in the first place when they never should have been.

Microsoft Office’s Windows 11-inspired design is now available

Microsoft has begun rolling out the new design for its Office suite of apps on Windows to the general public, the company announced today. Microsoft initially announced this new design for the Office apps back in the summer, and it’s meant to align with Windows 11, which launched just two months ago.

The new design features a cleaner look with a lighter emphasis on the accent color of each app. Instead, the frame of the window as well as the rest of the app, will follow the system’s dark or light theme by default, though you can change this. The ribbon also looks a bit different, and it now looks more like a floating panel that pops out of the window. It also uses rounded corners, in typical Windows 11 style.

New Office apps design in Windows 11

Microsoft says it’s also working in adding support for the Mica transparency effect that’s characteristic of Windows 11. If you’re unfamiliar with it, this is the effect you see in the Windows 11 start menu, the Settings app, and other parts of the OS that use transparency.

While the new Office design is inspired by Windows 11, Windows 10 users also get access to it, though the Mica effect won’t be available to them. Also, Windows 11 users are apparently being prioritized for this design. If you’re running the new OS and you have a Microsoft 365 subscription enrolled in the Current Channel or a Microsoft Office 2021 perpetual license, then you can access the update right now by using the Coming soon toggle in the title bar of Office apps. If you’re still running Windows 10, only some users can currently do this, and the update will continue to roll out over time. Microsoft says the update is currently available to 50% of users running the latest version of Office.

If you’re trying to enable this feature, there are some things worth noting. The Coming soon toggle is only available in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook, but Outlook doesn’t let you enable the new look. You’ll need to enable it in of the other four apps, but once you do, it will be applied to all your Office apps, including Access, Outlook, Project, Publisher, and Visio.

Android 12L Developer Preview 1 arrives for the Lenovo P12 Pro

Android is constantly changing and improving, and the platform has matured over the years to be one of the most dominant operating systems in the world. Android 12 is the most recent Android version, arriving in an anti-climactic AOSP source code drop at the start of October. It was followed by a Pixel series rollout a few weeks later, alongside the launch of the Google Pixel 6 series. At the time, we had already gotten our hands on what we thought was Android 12.1, though we later learned that it would be called “Android 12L” and that the first beta release would arrive for the Pixel lineup in December. Android 12L Developer Preview 1 is now available for the Lenovo P12 Pro, and you can install it already.

Interestingly, we already know a lot of what Google has planned for Android 12L. It’s an update primarily focused around large-screen foldables and tablets, which is why Google has partnered with Lenovo to launch the first developer preview. In its current state, there’s not a whole lot that can be tested on regular smartphones. Android 12L doesn’t do much aside from adjusting the layout of multiple system interfaces in order to take advantage of larger displays with a screen width greater than 600dp, meaning that you’ll need a tablet to see them.

Android 12L Developer Preview 1’s changelog is pretty short as a result, and it’s stuff that we’ve already seen documented.

  • The first large screen optimized Android OS with new APIs for application developers to provide a better app usage experience in landscape mode, including easier multitasking, system UI optimization and more.
  • Security patch updated to 2021-11-01

If you’re an average user, there’s no real reason to install this developer preview yet. It will likely have bugs and other problems, not to mention that the install process itself is painful. You need to make sure your P12 Pro is the Wi-Fi edition only, and installing Android 12L will wipe your device. Not only that but there’s a pretty long list of problems right now, too.

  • ‘Copy apps& data’ in OOBE is not supported.
  • Fingerprint unlock is not supported
  • Face Unlock is not supported
  • TOF sensor related function is removed
  • Stylus key function is not supported but basic function works
  • Touchpad functions with two fingers are not supported
  • Touchpad swipe up/down/left/right with 3 or 4 fingers are not supported
  • Miracast function is not supported
  • Screen output via cable (extended screen) can be supported when force desktop mode> is turned on in developer menu.
  • Cast Via HDMI (extended screen) can be supported when <force desktop mode> is turned on in developer menu.
  • VPN is not tested and may not work properly
  • WIDI is not supported
  • Please manually connect keyboard to your device via bluetooth to display battery info of keyboard in Settings.

You can rollback using Lenovo’s official rollback tool, but again, that will also wipe data on your device, and it requires a Windows operating system to run. If you want to try out Android 12L on your Lenovo P12 Pro, then you can check out the official developer site to learn how to install it.

JetBrains releases Compose Multiplatform 1.0 for creating Kotlin-based Android, desktop, and web apps

JetBrains produces some of the most popular integrated development environments (IDEs) around for creating software with Java, PHP, Kotlin, and other programming languages. The company has also been working on JetBrains Compose Multiplatform, a framework for creating cross-platform applications based on the Kotlin language (and is connected to Google’s Jetpack Compose). Multiplatform has been in various stages of development across different platforms for a while, and now JetBrains says it’s ready for everyone to use on Android, desktop, and the web.

JetBrains said on Thursday, “with Compose Multiplatform by Jetbrains, developers can easily create desktop apps with UI in Kotlin. The framework is declarative, so the code reflects the UI and developers don’t need to worry about UI update logic, it allows them to preview parts of the UI without building the whole app, and shares the common API with Jetpack Compose by Google to simplify the adoption. […] Developers can share their UI and state management code between Android, Desktop and Web, and easily port the Android Jetpack Compose-based apps to desktop. ”

That all means that it’s now possible to create applications across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and the web with a single Kotlin codebase. Desktop apps can use menus, keyboard shortcuts, and notifications, with hardware-accelerated rendering using the Skia graphics library. Web apps built with Multiplatform have access to special CSS abilities for interacting with page elements.

There’s no shortage of frameworks at this point for creating cross-platform software, with Electron likely being the most popular right now (powering Discord, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Skype, and many others), though Electron does not support mobile at all. Google is currently developing Flutter, which uses the Dart programming language and currently supports desktop platforms, mobile, and the web — same as Jetpack Compse Multiplatform.
