Google Pixel 4a now comes in a limited edition Barely Blue color

Just in time for the holidays, Google has unveiled the Pixel 4a is now available in Barely Blue. But act fast, because once supply is gone, that’s it.

Available exclusively from Google, the limited edition color costs $349, the same as the Just Black version that was released in August. Other than the color, there’s nothing new about the Pixel 4a in Barely Blue; the specs are the same.

Before its launch, the Pixel 4a was actually rumored to come in the newly unveiled Barely Blue, but the phone only launched in a Just Black. At the time, rumors suggested Google was unable to procure enough manufacturing capacity for this Barely Blue color. The inability to procure manufacturing capacity could be why the new color is a limited edition.

The Pixel 4a in Barely Blue is available now in the U.S. for $349. According to CNET, the color will also be available in Japan later this year.

GitHub reinstates YouTube-DL after EFF intervention and is changing its DMCA review process

Last month, GitHub took down multiple repositories containing YouTube-DL code after a DMCA takedown notice was filed by the Recording Industry Association of America, Inc. (RIAA). Today, GitHub has announced that the repos of YouTube-DL have been reinstated.

In a blog post on Monday, GitHub explained why it complied with the DMCA takedown notice in the first place, how it was able to reverse that decision, and how it’s changing its DMCA review process going forward.

GitHub revealed that that Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) got involved once the takedown was instituted. Ultimately, it was able to prove that GitHub wasn’t in violation of any laws based on new information that showed the project was not circumventing a technical protection measure (TPM). The repositories of YouTube-DL never actually contained copyright-infringing code, so no rules were broken.

GitHub said that DMCA takedown claims based on circumvention are an “industry-wide issue” for developers, which is why organizations like the EFF are so important.

Most takedown notices we receive allege copyright infringement—that someone used their copyrighted work (often software code) in a way that infringes their rights. But as many people noticed, the youtube-dl takedown notice fell into a more unusual category: anticircumvention—an allegation that the code was designed to circumvent technical measures that control access or copying of copyrighted material, in violation of Section 1201 of the DMCA.

Section 1201 dates back to the late 1990s and did not anticipate the various implications it has for software use today. As a result, Section 1201 makes it illegal to use or distribute technology (including source code) that bypasses technical measures that control access or copying of copyrighted works, even if that technology can be used in a way that would not be copyright infringement. Circumvention was the core claim in the youtube-dl takedown.

GitHub CEO Nat Friedman said the reinstatement of YouTube-DL on its platform is a big win for developers. “Developers should have the freedom to tinker,” Friedman said on Twitter.

GitHub also revealed how it will handle DMCA claims in the future, including requiring technical and legal experts to review all “credible 1201 takedown” claims. If a claim is ambiguous, GitHub said it will take the side of the developer. If a claim is found to be legitimate, GitHub will notify the repository owner and give them an opportunity to make changes to the repo to avoid a takedown.

To fight situations like this in the future, GitHub also announced it’s creating a $1 million developers defense fund, which will protect developers against unwarranted DMCA Section 1201 takedown claims. Finally, GitHub said it will take every effort to advocate for reforming the DMCA, particularly when it comes to anti-circumvention.

Today only, save on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements at Woot!

Adobe products can be really expensive. Whether you decide to subscribe to their Creative Cloud service or buy the applications outright, it can really take a chunk out of your wallet. There are definitely ways to save on the applications, but reseller sites can be a dice roll, and sometimes you end up with a bad code and no way to get a refund. But, today only at Woot!, you can save money stress-free on Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Premiere Elements.

With this sale, you have three choices–Adobe Photoshop Elements 2020 by itself, Adobe Premiere Elements 2020 by itself, or a bundle of both of them together. Individual applications will cost $50 apiece, while the bundle is $75. That’s half off their MSRPs! Also, if you have Amazon Prime (which you still might if you signed up for the free 30 days for Prime Day), you’ll get free shipping for this item.

That’s the catch for this Woot! deal, though–these are discs, not just product codes. So, your computer needs a disc drive in order to run the installer. I know I run with a smaller PC build than most, so I decided against a DVD-ROM drive in order to save space. If you have a disc drive built-in or have an external DVD-ROM reader (which can be very helpful), then you’re good to go! In fact, you can buy the application of your choice and an external reader just for the disc and still save!

But, as is usually the case with Woot!, this deal only lasts until the end of the day, or until they sell out. Make sure to grab this quickly if you’re interested!

Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 2020
Today only, save 50% on Adobe products! You can get Photoshop Elements 2020, Premiere Elements 2020, or both. Grab what you want before it's gone!

If you’re interested in an external DVD-ROM drive, there is one on Amazon that’s just a little over $20 with good reviews, too:

      Amicool External DVD Drive
Did you get rid of your DVD drive in your PC setup? Most people have, but sometimes you need a drive for applications and older installations. This DVD-ROM reader is reliable and cheap, so you can make sure to have a disc reader when you need it.

Here are the best Thunderbolt 3 laptops: Dell XPS 15, Apple MacBook Air and More

Data transfer speeds have grown exponentially in the past few years, be it mobile networks or your local storage media. Similarly, the good old USB has also become quite reliable when it comes to transferring large amounts of data over a wide bandwidth. Intel had announced Thunderbolt 4 earlier this year but it might take a while before we can see devices adopting the new connectivity protocol. So today, we are checking out some of the best Thunderbolt 3 equipped laptops.

Thunderbolt 3 makes use of the USB Type-C connector to offer up to 40Gbps data transfer speeds. This makes it twice as fast when compared to the latest USB 3.2 standard. Hence, Thunderbolt 3 is an excellent option for photographers, video editors, and other creative professionals, who need to frequently transfer large files. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 can be used to connect DisplayPort-compatible devices including external 4K monitors.  The protocol can also be used to connect PCI Express (PCIe) peripherals including external graphics cards enabling you to play games or accomplish graphics-intensive tasks on even notebooks. Since it uses a standard USB port, one can also make use of various peripherals, hard drives, as well as power delivery. In case you missed it, here is also a list of the best laptops that you can buy in 2020.

    Apple MacBook Pro 16

    apple macbook pro 16

Apple has been one of the early adopters of the Thunderbolt standard. The MacBook Pro 16 offers a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports. Apart from the 40Gbps bandwidth for Thunderbolt devices, each port brings support for charging, DisplayPort, and USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 (up to 10 Gbps). Now, this is also the biggest and most powerful MacBook in years and an easy recommendation for power users, especially if you are a creative professional. The notebook can be configured with an 8-core Intel Core i9 processor, up to 16GB of 2666MHz DDR4 RAM which is further expandable, and up to 8TB of SSD storage. You also get a gorgeous 3072 x 1920 resolution Retina display and AMD Radeon Pro graphics. Do note that this might be one of the last MacBooks to support external graphics via the Thunderbolt ports as the next refresh might include the M1 chip that was introduced with the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13, and Mac mini.

      Apple MacBook Pro 16
The MacBook Pro 16 is the most powerful notebook from Apple and offers a total of four Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Dell XPS 15

    dell xps 15 laptop

The XPS 15 is an excellent Windows machine for someone who wants a premium, top of the line design as well as performance. This one comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports with power delivery and DisplayPort support. There is a third USB Type-C port as well with the same power delivery and DisplayPort options. While the machine comes with 4GB discrete graphics, you can make use of the Thunderbolt port to plug in an external graphics card as well. Other than that you get this notebook with up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i9 processor with 32GB of RAM and 1TB NVMe SSD.

      Dell XPS 15
The XPS 15 is the best 15-inch notebook for someone who is looking for a premium design as well as a promising performance package. Apart from a standard USB Type-C port, the notebook comes with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon

    lenovo thinkpad x1 carbon

The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is regarded as one of the best business notebooks. The two Thunderbolt 3 ports on this machine ensure that users can easily attach external monitors or projectors for quick presentations. The ports also allow you to power other devices as well as the notebook itself. The X1 Carbon comes with the latest 10th-Gen Intel vPro CPUs, up to 16GB of RAM, and 2TB SSD. The notebook is also offered with a variety of display options including 4K IPS with Dolby Vision HDR400. The ThinkPad X1 Carbon is a wise choice if you are looking for a feature-packed, highly durable laptop along with a wide selection of ports.

      Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon
The ThinkPad is a popular name when it comes to business laptops. The 8th-gen ThinkPad X1 Carbon comes with a total of two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Dell XPS 13

    dell xps 13 9300

The XPS 13 is one of the best Windows notebooks out there. Since it is a fairly small notebook, having Thunderbolt 3 makes a lot of sense. You can hook up two 4K monitors using the two Thunderbolt 3 ports on this machine. Both of the ports also support power delivery. The current generation of the XPS 13 offers up to a 10th-gen Intel Core i7-1065G7 processor, 16GB of memory, and 512GB SSD. The notebook also offers an excellent-looking display with a 16:10 ratio available in 1080p or 2400p resolutions.

      Dell XPS 13
The Dell XPS 13 is a highly recommended premium notebook that offers a solid balance of style and performance. It offers a total of two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one on each side.

    Apple MacBook Air

    apple macbook air m1

Similar to the MacBook Pro 16, the latest-gen MacBook Air also features Thunderbolt 3 ports. However, you only get two of them, since the notebook is relatively more affordable.  The Thunderbol ports support external 4K displays, but no longer support external graphics cards due to the new M1 chip. The MacBook Air is also the thinnest and lightest apart from being the most affordable MacBook that you can buy today. You get a healthy set of internals including the new Apple Silicon M1 chip with up to 512GB of SSD storage and 8GB of RAM that can be further upgraded.

      Apple MacBook Air
The MacBook Air might be the most affordable laptop offering from Apple, but it continues to offer a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports.

    Acer Swift 3

    acer swift 3 2020

This is the most affordable option if you are looking for a Thunderbolt 3 port equipped laptop. The Swift 3 is a slim ultrabook packing some really good specifications at its price. There is only one USB Type-C port that supports Thunderbolt 3, but at a starting price of just $678, you can’t really complain. It is also a very lightweight machine at just 1.2kg with a robust finish. You can get the notebook with either a 10th-gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU with 8GB of memory and a 512GB SSD.

      Acer Swift 3
The Acer Swift 3 is a lightweight notebook and also one of the most affordable ones out there if you are looking for a Thunderbolt port. Sadly, you only get one such port.

    HP Spectre x360 13

    hp spectre x360 13

The Spectre x360 makes for a great option if you are looking for a 2-in-1 laptop with Thunderbolt 3. According to the company, the notebook offers two USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C ports both of which offer Thunderbolt 3 functionality. This means that each port offers a 40Gbps signaling rate, Power Delivery 3.0, DisplayPort 1.4, and of course letting you charge the laptop itself. The notebook offers a unique design and the option of a vivid 13.3-inch 4K OLED touch display. This is a premium notebook so expect solid hardware on the inside including an option for the 10th-gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 CPU, 16GB of DDR4 memory, 512GB of NVMe SSD, and speakers tuned by Bang & Olufsen.

      HP Spectre x360 13
One of the most premium 2-in-1 laptops, the HP Spectre x360 is for the ones who don't want to compromise on style and performance. It comes with a great 4K touchscreen display option along with two Thunderbolt 3 ports.

Back at CES 2020, Intel had announced that Thunderbolt 4 is in the works and we can expect manufacturers to start shipping products with the new port by next year. Thunderbolt 4 brings some new features including an increase in the minimum video and data requirements provided by host devices, access to the same speeds at Thunderbolt 3 (40Gbps), power delivery (100W), various protocols (DisplayPort, PCIe, USB4) Intel VT-d based DMA protection to avoid unauthorized access while connected, support for connectivity accessories with up to four fully functional and highly flexible downstream and of course, backward compatibility with Thunderbolt 3. So if you care for any of the added benefits, hold on to your money till 2021.

Google and Apple join Next G Alliance, years ahead of commercial 6G

You may still be struggling to get a 3G signal where you are, let alone 5G, but get with the program, square – 6G is where it’s at, at least if you’re Google and Apple. Both companies have joined the US trade group The Next G Alliance, a collection of potential 6G stakeholders, due to convene for the first time this week. The group, managed by ATIS, a trade association, operates with a goal to “advance North American mobile technology leadership in 6G and beyond over the next decade while building on the long-term evolution of 5G.”

Google and Apple have joined just weeks after launching their first 5G devices, showing just how far ahead companies are having to think to keep up with the technology. The terrible twosome joins Charter Communications, Cisco, HPE, Intel, Keysight Technologies, LG Electronics, Mavenir, MITRE, and VMWare, according to a report from Light Reading. They join founders from AT&T Bell Canada, Ciena, Ericsson, Facebook, Interdigital, JMA Wireless, Microsoft, Nokia, Qualcomm, Samsung, Telus, Telnyx, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon.

So far, only Ericsson, Samsung, and Huawei have made any kind of comprehensive statement of intent over 6G. Huawei isn’t currently eligible to join the group due to current sanctions, but in a strange way inspired its formation. The group is hoping to prevent any delays or fractures in the 6G roadmap caused by the current suspicion between the US and China. Failure to improve relations could eventually lead to two completely incompatible 6G rollouts, with consumers the eventual losers, and so collaboration in these early stages is vital.

At present, the proposed 6G bandwidth is unlicensed, and by the time we see any kind of public use for the slice of spectrum, expected around 2030, the world could be a very different place. After all, we’re only just learning what 5G can do.
