WSL 2 support comes to Windows 10 v1903 and v1909

Microsoft first announced Windows Subsystem for Linux 2/WSL 2 during Microsoft Build last year and it was rolled out to the stable version earlier this year with the Windows 10 May 2020 update (version 2004). The update introduced a full Linux kernel to the stable Windows 10 branch and the company also made WSL 2 updatable through Windows Update, which meant that users no longer had to rely on the command line option to update the kernel. Now, Microsoft is bringing WSL 2 support to older versions of Windows 10.

According to a recent post on the Windows Command Line blog, WSL 2 support is making its way to Windows 10 version 1903 and 1909 via an update. However, the backport will only be available for x64 systems, and users who are running an ARM64 version will need to update to Windows 10 version 2004 to gain access to WSL 2.

In case you’re one of the many users running Windows 10 version 1903 or 1909, you can head over to the Update & Security section in the Windows Settings and click on Check for Updates to see if you’ve received the update. As the blog post explains, you can check if you’ve received the backport by verifying the minor build number of your current Windows 10 build.

Windows 10 verify build number WSL 2 backport

To do so, you’ll need to right click on the start menu, click ‘Run’, type in ‘winver’, and then hit enter. On the following page, you’ll be able to check your OS Build number. If your minor build number (numbers that appear after the ‘.’ in the OS Build number) is 1049 or higher on Windows builds 18362 or 18363, then you have received the backport and, therefore, WSL 2 support.

After you’ve verified that you’ve received the backport, you can then follow the instructions given in this post to install WSL, or simply update to use WSL 2. With WSL 2 support, you’ll be able to compile LineageOS custom ROMs on your Windows 10. If you’re interested in trying that out, you can follow this guide to get started.

ASUS ZenFone 6 gets a limited beta sign up for Android 11

The ASUS ZenFone 6, or the ASUS 6Z as it is called in India, is known for its unique 48MP rear-facing camera that flips to the front. The budget flagship of yesteryear was launched with a near-stock version of Android Pie, while ASUS delivered the stable Android 10 update to the phone back in November 2019. And now, the ASUS ZenFone 6 has joined the short list of smartphones that are eligible to receive Android 11 beta builds from their makers.

ASUS ZenFone 6 XDA Forums

In order to enroll yourself in the Android 11 beta testing, users need to have the latest stable channel build of Android 10 (software version 17.1810.2008.171) installed on their ZenFone 6. This particular build started rolling out a few days ago, and it introduced a new option named “Enroll in the Beta Test Program” inside the “System update” settings, which is the only way of registering yourself for this limited Android 11 beta testing phase.

asus_zenfone_6_android_11_beta_enroll

Below you can find the download link of the aforementioned prerequisite firmware for the ASUS ZenFone 6. After downloading, move the ZIP file at the root of the internal storage and reboot the phone once to get the notification for the update.

Download software version 17.1810.2008.171 for the ASUS ZenFone 6

The recruitment period is open till September 4, but ASUS hasn’t disclosed anything regarding the number of available slots. The company is planning to publish the recruitment result on September 9, while the selected participants should also receive an individual confirmation email from ASUS. All the beta testers will be given special authorization to access a private section of the ASUS ZenTalk forums, which is meant for posting feedback and bug reports.

Interestingly, the eligibility criteria vaguely demand that your ZenFone 6 must be bootloader locked for Android 11 beta enrollment. The exact verbatim is “Didn’t unlock the device before“, which indicates that a ZenFone 6/ASUS 6Z unit with a re-locked bootloader might not be eligible for participation.

Samsung Galaxy M51 with an insane 7,000 mAh battery expected to launch in September

We first learned about the Samsung Galaxy M51 earlier this year in March, when renowned leaker @OnLeaks shared CAD renders of the upcoming device. At the time, we didn’t have much information about its specifications but the renders revealed that the device would feature a 6.5-inch display with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera, a capacitive fingerprint sensor on the back panel, and USB Type-C port for charging and data syncing. Now, leaker Ishan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24) has managed to procure more details about the device, including information about its RAM/storage variants.

According to a recent report from Pricebaba, the Samsung Galaxy M51 will feature a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Infinity-O display with a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. The device will, most likely, be powered by Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 730 chip, coupled with either 6GB or 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage.

Samsung Galaxy M51 leaked render featured 1

As seen in the leaked renders, the Samsung Galaxy M51 will include a quad-camera setup on the back with a 64MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide sensor, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 5MP macro camera. Over on the front, the device will feature a 32MP selfie shooter. The report further adds that the device will pack in a massive 7,000mAh battery with support for 25W fast charging. On the software front, the device will run Samsung’s One UI 2.1 based on Android 10.

While the Samsung Galaxy M51 seems to be a standard mid-range smartphone, for the most part, its 7,000mAh battery will surely give it an edge over the competition. Based on the performance of the Galaxy M31s, which packs in a 6,000mAh battery, we can safely assume that the Galaxy M51 will offer over 20 hours of screen-on-time and it will comfortably last over two days on a single charge.

As of now, we have no official information from Samsung regarding the release timeline for the Galaxy M51. However, Pricebaba claims that the device will be unveiled in September. It’s also worth noting that a support page for the device was recently spotted on Samsung Russia’s website, which suggests that it might be launched in the following weeks.

Google Maps v10.49 prepares to show admission ticket prices

Google Maps is one of the most useful Google services out there. While the current COVID-19 pandemic may have reduced our dependence on Maps as our daily commutes have gone down, the app still boasts of a number of features that allow it to retain relevancy outside the scope of a simple “map” (along with features that also make it a great map app). Google is expanding Maps’ scope once again as the latest version of the app is preparing to show admission ticket pricing.

An APK teardown can often predict features that may arrive in a future update of an application, but it is possible that any of the features we mention here may not make it in a future release. This is because these features are currently unimplemented in the live build and may be pulled at any time by the developers in a future build.

Google Maps v10.49 includes the following strings which indicate that the app is working towards displaying ticket pricing:

<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_ACTION_BUTTON_TITLE">Tickets</string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_EXPLANATION">Adult ticket options</string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_EXPLANATION_WITH_WEBSITE">Adult ticket options from <a href=\"%1$s\">%2$s</a></string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_EXPLANATION_WITH_WEBSITE_NO_TICKET_REQUIRED">From <a href=\"%1$s\">%2$s</a></string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_SEE_MORE_TICKETS">See more tickets</string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_TITLE">Official tickets</string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_TOOLTIP_CONTENT">Prices are based on typical adult admission and may vary based on the specific ticket types, dates, or eligibility for other discounts.</string>
<string name="ADMISSION_PRICES_TOOLTIP_CONTENT_DESCRIPTION">Disclaimer</string>

The strings do not restrict the type of events for which these admission ticket pricing will be displayed, so we presume that this piece of information can be displayed across a wide variety of cultural events and tourist locations. The pandemic certainly has reduced how much people travel for leisure and entertainment, but as districts begin opening up, this new feature can help broadcast the admission pricing. This would be useful as this pricing could possibly be different from what it was pre-COVID-19, and having that information available beforehand would be a big help towards planning travel.

The Google Maps update also includes these strings on the parking session feature:

<string name="PARKING_SESSION_ACTIVE_INDICATOR">ACTIVE</string>
<string name="PARKING_SESSION_END_TIME_PREFIX">until %s</string>
<string name="PARKING_SESSION_EXPIRING_NOTIFICATION_TEXT">%s left on your parking session</string>
<string name="PARKING_SESSION_EXPIRING_NOTIFICATION_TITLE">Your parking will expire at %s</string>

The parking location feature has been available for a while now. The parking session feature was also spotted quite some time ago, and it also popped up notifications when your session was coming to an end. We aren’t sure why these strings were added. Perhaps Google plans to build this forward?

The Maps update also included a new string for Google Assistant‘s Driving Mode:

<string name="GOOGLE_ASSISTANT_DRIVING_MODE_SETTINGS_SUMMARY">Manage driving mode</string>

Google planned to phase out Android Auto in favor of Google Assistant’s Driving Mode that was announced back in 2019. We’re more than halfway through 2020, but that Driving Mode has yet to officially roll out. This string could indicate that Google is coming close to rolling out the feature, but the feature has been in development for so long, we can’t really say for sure.

Xiaomi may rebrand the international Redmi 9C as Redmi 9 and POCO C3 in India

Towards the end of last month, we found evidence that Xiaomi was planning to rebrand the Redmi 9C as the POCO C3 for the Indian market. The upcoming POCO C3 was spotted in a Bluetooth certification listing with the model number M2006C3MI, which is precisely the same as the model number for the budget-friendly Redmi 9C. Now, leaked renders of the upcoming Redmi 9 (Indian variant) have surfaced online, suggesting that it’s also based on the same device.

The leaked renders of the Redmi 9 were shared by leaker Sudhanshu Ambhore (@Sudhanshu1414) and they reveal that the Indian variant of the Redmi 9 looks nothing like the Redmi 9 international variant that was launched earlier this year in June. The device in the renders closely resembles the Redmi 9C, with a square camera module and a capacitive fingerprint scanner on the back. However, there’s one well-concealed difference.

At first glance, you’ll notice that the Xiaomi Redmi 9 renders showcase a device with a triple camera setup, much like the Redmi 9C. However, on close inspection, you’ll see that one of the three camera sensors on the back of the device is just a blank space. This means that the Indian variant of the Redmi 9 won’t feature the same triple camera setup found on the Redmi 9C. This detail has been corroborated by another renowned leaker, Ishaan Agarwal (@ishanagarwal24), who noted that the renders of the Redmi 9 India variant are that of the Redmi 9C NFC variant that was launched in Europe earlier this year, except for the missing third camera sensor.

The leaked Xiaomi Redmi 9 renders are accompanied by specifications of the device, which further confirms our suspicions. The Redmi 9 India variant is expected to feature a 6.53-inch HD+ LCD display, a 13MP+2MP dual camera setup on the back, and a 5MP selfie shooter over on the front. The device will be powered by MediaTek’s Helio G35 chip, coupled with a 5,000mAh battery with 10W charging support.

We’ve also learned that the Xiaomi Redmi 9 India variant will go by the codename cattail, and it will be part of the Redmi 9C (codename angelica) family, despite the difference in codename. Thanks to XDA Senior Member Deic, we can also confirm that the upcoming POCO C3 will go by the codename angelicain, and it’s expected to be a closer copy of the Redmi 9C.

As mentioned in a previous post, POCO shares a centralized product R&D with Xiaomi, and all of its devices are based on existing Xiaomi phones. For instance, the POCO F1 was loosely based on the Xiaomi Mi 8, the POCO X2 was a rebranded Redmi K30 4G, the POCO F2 Pro was a rebranded Redmi K30 Pro 5G, and the POCO M2 Pro was based on the Redmi Note 9 Pro. Irrespective of that, POCO maintains that it’s a separate brand that differentiates itself in other aspects like its go-to-market strategy and sales. According to POCO General Manager C. Manmohan, the brand’s strength lies in the community and its feedback, which is where its team works to improve its devices.

Xiaomi is expected to launch the Redmi 9 in India on August 27th, as per teasers shared by the company. As of now, we don’t have any information regarding the launch timeline for the POCO C3.

Apple, Garmin, and Huawei continue to top the smartwatch market in 2020

Despite a global economic downtown due to COVID-19, smartwatch sales have seen a healthy rise in revenue over the last few months. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Apple, Garmin, and Huawei wearables comprised nearly 70% of the total smartwatch market revenue in the first six months of 2020. The Apple Watch continues to dominate with over 50% of the total market share, up from 43% in H1 2019.“Close to 42 million smartwatches were shipped in the first half of 2020 as wearables continue to see greater demand with consumers becoming more health conscious,” said Counterpoint Research Senior Analyst Sujeong Lim.

As people around the globe were forced into quarantine, many consumers began to prioritize taking care of their health, so rather than purchase a new smartphone, they opted to get a wearable. Smartwatch shipments grew in India (+57% YoY), Europe (+9% YoY), and the U.S. (+5% YoY), which Counterpoint Research says offset the decline in other markets.

In China and other Asian markets, Huawei’s Watch GT2 series was a popular option, with the Chinese company’s smartwatch shipment volumes jumping 90% in China and Asia and 57% globally YoY. This growth propelled Huawei to the #2 position in H1 2020 in terms of global smartwatch shipment revenue. Meanwhile, Garmin’s Forerunner and Fenix lines were popular with audiences in Europe and North America, with overall demand for the Forerunner and Fenix lines up 31% YoY. Granted, Garmin and Huawei only grabbed a combined total of 17.7% of the global smartwatch shipment revenue in H1 2020, a far cry from Apple’s 51.4%, but the two companies have nonetheless achieved a good return considering the circumstances.

Amazfit, Xiaomi, Fitbit, Mobvoi, and Suunto are also mentioned in Counterpoint Research’s data, but their market shares are drops in the bucket compared to Apple’s smartwatch business, which was led by last year’s Apple Watch Series 5. Nonetheless, Amazfit and Xiaomi both posted respectable growth figures (51% and 47% YoY respectively), and there’s still room to grow, especially with the upcoming holiday shopping season in play. Samsung, previously the #2 player in smartwatches, struggled a bit in H1 2020, but the new Galaxy Watch 3 could turn the tide for the Korean company in H2 2020.

Some of the common health features found in the market’s top-selling smartwatches include heart rate monitors and fall detection. The square form factor apparently sells better than other designs, which could be due to the fact that the square design allows manufacturers to squeeze in more sensors and battery power. LTE-capable smartwatches are also becoming more popular, with over one in four smartwatches shipped in H1 2020 featuring a cellular modem. That shift benefits Qualcomm which recently announced its Snapdragon Wear 4100 wearable platform earlier this year.

As the smartwatch category continues to rise in popularity, one thing to look out for in the future is how Google’s hardware division will enter the market. While the company makes the Android-based Wear OS platform, which accounted for 10% of the total smartwatch market in H1 2020, it doesn’t sell its own smartwatch yet. However, Google’s push to acquire Fitbit hints the company very much intends to renew its focus on wearables once regulatory hurdles are cleared.

Higher budget spenders can also look for tried-and-trusted brands like OtterBox and Dbrand — not only do they have great offerings which provide the ultimate in protection, they also have a history and reputation of consistently providing such protection. Lower down the line, options from Spigen, Ringke, and Caseology give you a wide variety of choices. You can go completely clear and flexible with thin see-through cases, or opt for a re-inforced bumper, or go for a harder TPU shell, or go even harder with a dual-layer design and a polycarbonate shell. If you’d much rather add some style to your Google Pixel 4a, there are cases with sparkling designs and even moving glitter that really attracts attention to an otherwise humble design. Choose your pick!
