Zoom is coming to Google Nest, Facebook Portal, and Amazon Echo Show smart displays

Zoom on Wednesday announced it will make its video conferencing software available to use on the Google Nest Hub Max, Facebook Portal, and Amazon Echo Show smart displays later this year.

The announcement comes as a surprise considering these companies all have competing video conferencing solutions. Google has Meet, Facebook has Rooms, and Amazon has Chime. This is ultimately good news for the consumer because it means people working from home have more devices to choose from for joining meetings.

Smart displays have become a common gadget in households across the world, and thanks to their large displays, built-in touchscreens, and high-quality directional microphones, they’re the perfect devices for video conferencing. The experience will vary depending on which smart display you own, though. Facebook Portal devices will get a Zoom app, which users can launch like they would an app on a phone, tablet, or computer. Zoom for Facebook Portal will take advantage of the display’s “smart camera” technology to automatically keep users in the frame. Google Nest Hub Max and Amazon Echo Show 8 can launch Zoom meetings that are scheduled in a calendar. It’s not quite as seamless as on the Facebook Portal, but regardless, it’s nice that Zoom is even available on these devices at all, because the service is one of the market’s most popular video conferencing options.

Facebook Portal owners can start using Zoom starting this September, while Google Nest Hub Max and Amazon Echo Show 8 owners will get support later this year. Other smart displays with Google Assistant support will also be able to participate in Zoom calls.

If you want to video chat on an even bigger screen, Google this week announced Meet on Chromecast, which will allow Meet users to cast their meetings to any Chromecast device.

Google Chrome Canary now lets you check for compromised passwords

Back in October last year, Google introduced a slew of privacy features for Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Chrome. This included a Password Checkup feature for Chrome, which would allow users to check if any of their passwords had been compromised in a public data breach. Now, the company is rolling out the feature in Google Chrome for Android.

According to a recent report from Techdows, the latest update for Google Chrome Canary introduces a new “Bulk password check” flag. Once enabled, the flag adds a new option in the browser settings called “Check passwords.” Tapping on the new Check passwords option scans all stored passwords and alerts users if their password has been compromised in a data breach.

In case you wish to try out the new feature on your device, you can download the latest version of Google Chrome Canary from the Play Store link below. Once you have the browser installed on your device, you’ll need to visit the chrome://flags page and search for the “Bluk password check” flag. Then, after you enable the flag and restart the browser, you should see the new “Check password” option within the “Passwords” setting on the browser.

Along with the Password Checkup feature, the Chrome Canary update also introduces the browser’s Safety Check feature to the Android version. In order to use the Safety Check feature on Android, you’ll first need to enable the “Safety Check on Android” flag and then restart the browser. You should then see a new Safety check option in the browser settings which will help keep you safe from data breaches, unsafe websites, and more.

New BlackBerry smartphone with a physical keyboard and 5G is coming in 2021

BlackBerry once occupied position as the maker of one of the more coveted pieces of technology to own, but the company and the brand have fallen a long way since then. When the company lost its market share in the smartphone market, it opted to license its name in 2016, letting other smartphone manufacturers design smartphones under the brand name. TCL took up the opportunity with devices like the KEYoneMotionKEY2, and KEY2 LE, but the company would have to stop using the BlackBerry name as its agreement came to an end this month. But if you are still yearning to own a BlackBerry device, a new company has picked up the mantle, promising new BB-branded smartphones with 5G connectivity and physical keyboards.

OnwardMobility has announced a licensing partnership with BlackBerry and FIH Mobile Limited (a subsidiary of Foxconn), which allows OnwardMobility to develop, engineer, and produce a new 5G-enabled BlackBerry-branded smartphone. The only other pieces of information available on this smartphone, apart from a part of its name, are the facts that it will have a physical keyboard and that it will come to Europe and North America in the first half of 2021.

ASUS ROG Phone 3 update improves multi-finger touch response, adds “Navigation blocking” feature for Game Genie

ASUS’ Republic of Gamers (ROG) tag always comes with the vibe of extreme performance, and the recently launched ROG Phone 3 does keep that legacy going. The monster smartphone ticks all the right boxes with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus SoC, 144Hz AMOLED display, 6,000mAh battery, up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM as well as 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and much more. The initial software update for the ASUS ROG Phone 3 bumped the Android security patch level (SPL) to July 2020, while the subsequent FOTA addressed a number of bugs. And now, ASUS is rolling out yet another software update for the ROG Phone 3 that brings in several improvements.

The new build is tagged as 17.0823.2007.47 and it is meant for the global variant of the ROG Phone 3. Avid PUBG Mobile players, who specifically bought this phone for playing the addictive battle royale title, should be happy to know that ASUS has managed to fix the insensitive multi-touch issue with the game in the new firmware. The OEM has also added a new feature named “Navigation blocking” for Game Genie that temporarily disables system gestures to avoid accidental touches while you are inside a game.

The complete changelog of the update is as below:

  • Added “Quick launch camera” option in System Settings->Advanced
  • Added “Navigation blocking” feature for Game Genie which disables system gesture operations to avoid accidental touches in games
  • Improved multi-touch when three or more fingers simultaneously touch the screen in games
  • Fixed a problem with insensitive multi-finger touch response when playing PUBG

As of now, there’s no information from the company regarding the release schedule for the aforementioned FOTA update. ASUS has yet to publish the full firmware package corresponding to this build on its download portal, but it should be up soon as the update starts to hit devices worldwide over the course of the next few weeks.

Bluetooth SIG is working on COVID-19 contact tracing support on wearables

COVID-19 contact tracing will soon make its way to wearable devices, according to a recent announcement from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG). The standards body, which is responsible for defining new Bluetooth standards, has announced that they are working on a new BLE specification that will make contact tracing possible on wearables.

Currently, Google and Apple’s Exposure Notification System (ENS) for COVID-19 contact tracing on smartphones relies on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). It makes use of a new subset of the BLE specification called “BLE Contact Detection Service,” which was designed by Google and Apple. Now, more than 130 Bluetooth member companies have come together for the new Bluetooth SIG Exposure Notification Working Group (ENWG) to define a standardized method for adding contact tracing support to wearable devices, while preserving the same privacy and protections offered by the ENS.

In a blog post regarding the matter, Elisa Rescone, a physics professor at the Technical University of Munich who is leading research on non-pharmaceutical interventions against COVID-19, said:

There are several population groups critical to managing the spread of diseases like COVID-19 with relatively low smartphone penetration, presenting a coverage challenge for smartphone-based Exposure Notification System. We believe including wearable devices in an ENS would be a very effective method for extending its reach to support these important groups.”

The ENWG is open to all Bluetooth SIG member companies, and it serves as a centralized forum for discussion on the effective use of Bluetooth technology in checking the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. The Bluetooth SIG has also revealed that an initial draft of the new Bluetooth specification is expected to be released and available for review within the next few months.

Speaking on the matter, Mark Powell, CEO of the Bluetooth SIG, said, “It is incredibly inspiring to see the Bluetooth community’s collaboration in finding and creating innovative ways to leverage Bluetooth technology to address the COVID-19 pandemic. We are grateful for the dedication and commitment of the Bluetooth members and proud of their work on this important effort.”

Google Pixel Buds, OnePlus Buds, and other Fast Pair devices now appear in Find My Device

Google announced Fast Pair back in 2017, showing off its vision on how the first-time pairing experience of Bluetooth accessories can be improved. Devices like the original Google Pixel Buds came with support for this new experience, and these were followed by dozens of other accessories. Fast Pair as a feature-set is also gaining new features over time. Recently, Google rolled out location tracking, battery notifications, and new settings for Fast Pair devices. Of these, the location tracking feature “Find My Device” is now rolling out to more devices like the second-generation Google Pixel Buds and the OnePlus Buds.

OnePlus Buds Review – Good audio, better price

“Find My Device”, or more specifically, “Find My Accessories” lets users ping the last known location of their Bluetooth accessories in the Find My Device app. This will come in handy when your phone is connected to the Bluetooth accessory, but you don’t know exactly where the Buds are. You will also be able to locate them even if they aren’t connected to you phone as long as you had Location History enabled. This feature is now being extended to the second-gen Pixel Buds, the OnePlus Buds, and other Fast Pair devices.

When you log into the Find My Device service on Android or on the web, the integration will now identify what phone your compatible Buds were last connected to, and the time and date. This information will be displayed against a map with the pin featuring a headphones icon against a gray background.

However, this information is currently not available in the Pixel Buds “app”, and the Find Device menu within the app merely lets you play a ringing sound. Google has not specifically announced a wider rollout yet, but we can see this feature being made available to the second-gen Pixel Buds and the new OnePlus Buds.
