Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra & Note 20 Full Specs List

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra Camera Features

1. Triple cameras: 108MP wide-angle, 12MP ultra-wide-angle, and 5x telephoto

In August 2019, Samsung announced the super high-resolution 108MP Bright HMX camera sensor. Although the announcement was primarily in partnership with Xiaomi, Samsung also inducted the camera sensor in its own flagship lineup by introducing it on the Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. It is the first camera sensor on the Galaxy Note series to breach the 100MP mark.

The 108MP camera benefits from a large 1/1.33″ sensor size that captures more light than the 1/1.7″ size of the 64MP Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1. The 108MP sensor combines four pixels into one by pixel binning and produces 27MP images. The sensor is complemented by an f/1.8 aperture lens that captures a 79° wide field of view, same as the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

On the other hand, the regular Galaxy Note 20 comes with a 12MP camera but, with a similar lens arrangement. On paper, this camera resembles the primary camera on the Galaxy Note 10 and the Note 10+ from last year.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 ultra cameras

Additionally, both the devices feature a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera lending a 120° field of view. The 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensors on both the Galaxy Note 20 devices shoot images with a pixel size of 1.4μm and are paired with f/2.2 lenses. This may seem a downgrade from the Galaxy Note 10 series’ 16MP cameras that offer a 123° wide field of view.

Both of the Galaxy Note 20 smartphones also feature telephoto cameras. While the standard Galaxy Note 20 features a 3x hybrid zoom setup, the Ultra sports a periscopic telephoto setup offering 5x optical and up to 50x hybrid zoom, similar to the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Both of the smartphones feature OIS to eliminate shakiness and ensure smoother image capturing at high zoom levels.

Lastly, while the Galaxy Note 20 5G feature dual-pixel autofocus, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra leverages laser autofocus for sharper images. Samsung has skipped the time of flight sensor from both of the devices.

2. Space Zoom on Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra 5G

Just like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra, the 5X telephoto camera on the Note 20 Ultra facilitates up to 50X hybrid zooming (ie 10x digital zoom on top of the 5X optical zoom). This not only allows users to capture far off objects with higher precision but also allows capturing of celestial bodies including a close-up shot of the moon. Samsung is not vying to achieve the 100x zoom that we found to be “a marketing gimmick” in our Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G review.

Nonetheless, the 50X can be very useful especially if you’re fond of moon-gazing. A special Moon mode on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is set to eliminate the requirement of a telescope.

At the same time, the 3x hybrid zoom set up on the regular Galaxy Note 20 utilizes a 64MP camera, which has two advantages. The first advantage is that the 64MP sensor will capture more light, especially at night, as compared to another sensor with a smaller resolution — thanks to pixel binning. The second advantage of this sensor is that you can crop a small portion of the 64MP images to effectively replicate the same results as a telephoto camera with more zoom.

3. 8K video recording

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series leverages the processing capabilities of the Snapdragon 865 Plus mobile platform to record videos at up to 8K resolution using the rear cameras. The 8K video recording supports a maximum frame rate of 24fps.

In addition, users can choose the standard 16:9 or switch to a stretched 21:9 aspect ratio for a cinematic appeal. The 24fps recording and the 21:9 aspect ratio are not limited to only 8K and can be chosen to capture videos on all video modes.

4. Pro Video mode with 120fps recording, dynamic controls, and mic switching

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra features a Pro Video mode that allows users to actively control parameters such as the ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and change the focal range of the video. What is better is the fact that users can tweak these parameters while recording a video. They will also be able to control the speed of zoom by swiping across the zoom scrubber slowly or quickly.

Although flagships have featured voice zoom for video recording, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra takes it forward with in-video mic selection. The feature allows users to choose from various audio sources such as omnidirectional audio (ie using rear and front microphones), just rear or just front microphones, or external microphones connected via USB or Bluetooth. At the same time, you also get indicators signaling the gain for the left and right channels while recording.

Taking advantage of the 120Hz refresh rate of the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra’s AMOLED display, users can record videos at up to 120fps (at Full HD resolution). In post-processing, the speed of the video playback can be changed as per requirement. This feature, therefore, allows users to create both — slow-motion and timelapse videos from the same clip.

Lastly, users will be able to combine more than one videos to create something called a “Highlight reel.” This Highlight reel feature automatically picks the best parts of all the videos and combines them into a single clip. In addition, users can add different filters to change the mood of the videos.

To sum up the Pro Video features of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, here’s a quick video:

The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra camera offers a lot more than its smaller sibling, and more importantly, it seems to fix the autofocus issues that plagued the same sensor on the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. Clearly, Samsung means for the Ultra name to mean the very best camera it can offer, and the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra seems to deliver on that. Check out our initial Galaxy Note 20 hands-on preview for more info, and stay tuned for the full review!

Motorola introduces new Moto Power Touch and Multi-Volume apps with the Moto G 5G Plus

The Moto G 5G Plus is Motorola’s cheapest 5G-enabled smartphone yet, offering a 6.7-inch 90Hz display, Snapdragon 765 SoC, quad cameras, and a 5,000 mAh battery at a starting price of just €349 (~$410). The device comes running Android 10 along with a touch of Motorola’s useful customizations on top. While most of the customizations and first-party apps are the same as what we have seen on previous Moto phones, it turns out Motorola has debuted two new apps with the Moto G 5G Plus to let users further customize the software experience to their usage patterns.

Moto G 5G Plus XDA Forums

These two applications are Moto Power Touch and Multi-Volume. Moto Power Touch lets you customize the double tap power button gesture to launch an app or shortcut of your choice. Normally, the double-tap power button can only launch the default camera app on Moto phones. Now, you can also select apps, quick actions, and shortcuts that you use the most and have them pop up in a floating window when you double-tap the power button for easier, quicker access.

Multi-Volume, meanwhile, lets you automatically mute apps based on your usage pattern. You can also manage the individual volumes of multiple apps on a per-app basis.

Our tipster, @GoofyBaars on Telegram, says they use this feature to mute Pokemon Go’s audio while listening to music.

Unfortunately, neither of these apps can be sideloaded on other Motorola devices. We tried installing them on a Moto Edge, but the installation failed. It’s likely Motorola will bring both apps to other Moto phones via a software update in the future.

Moto Power Touch (Free, Google Play) →

The Moto G 5G Plus is currently only available in the European markets. However, according to our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, the device should be coming to the U.S. soon and is expected to be available through AT&T.

This is in-line with Motorola’s promise “to launch a sub-$500 5G device in North America this fall.”

Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 get new privacy features in Samsung’s AltZLife update for India

Samsung recently rolled out an update for the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71, which introduced some of the headline-worthy features from the Galaxy S20 series to the mid-range devices. The update included features like the Single Take camera mode, a better Pro mode, Quick Share, Music Share, and much more. Now, the company is rolling out another noteworthy update for the two devices, which introduces two privacy features for users in India under a new ‘Make in India’ innovation called AltZLife.

Samsung Galaxy A51 and A71 Hands-on: Mid-Range Smartphone Winners

The AltZLife update has already started rolling out to users and it includes two useful privacy features — Quick Switch and Content Suggestions. The Quick Switch feature will allow users to switch between two instances of the same app in order to keep their private and public data separate from each other. For instance, users will be able to quickly switch between the normal Gallery app and a private Gallery by double-clicking the power button. This will let them easily secure sensitive data on their devices.

Samsung Galaxy A51 XDA Forum || Samsung Galaxy A71 XDA Forum

To prevent unauthorized access, users will have to provide authentication after double-clicking the power button in normal mode. Interestingly, this authentication won’t be the same as the lock screen authentication method, which adds a further layer of privacy to the feature.

The Content Suggestions feature, on the other hand, is an AI-based app inside the Secure Folder that will prompt users to move their private images to the Secure Folder. To set it up, users will first have to select specific faces or a type of image they want to tag as private and store in the private gallery of the Secure Folder. Once the initial setup is complete, the on-device AI engine will kick in and identify all relevant images that should be moved to the Secure Folder. Samsung claims that since Content Suggestions makes use of an on-device AI solution, none of the information gathered by the AI leaves the device.

In a statement regarding the new AltZLife features, Manu Sharma, Senior Director, Mobile Business at Samsung India, said, “An industry first innovation, this intelligent feature has been designed keeping in mind the inherent need of consumers, especially Gen Z, for enhanced privacy when it comes to storage and access of content on their smartphones. This helps eliminate the anxiety that consumers usually face while also sharing their smartphones with someone.”

It’s also worth noting that the two ‘Make for India’ privacy solutions have been developed by engineers from Samsung’s R&D Institutes in Bangalore and Noida. As of now, Samsung hasn’t revealed any plans to offer the new AltZLife features in other regions.

Download: New MIUI Gallery from MIUI 12 adds OCR, screenshot frames, and new Sky replacement filters

Xiaomi’s MIUI is one of the most popular custom UX present on Android, thanks to the wide popularity of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones. MIUI makes several changes to the base Android, so much so that the features present on Xiaomi devices are dictated more so by their MIUI version instead of their Android version. MIUI’s Gallery app is now adding in several more features to this list, as it has now gained support for OCR, device frames for screenshots, and new Sky Replacement filters.

MIUI 12 Hands-on: 12 interesting new features added in Xiaomi’s Android OS

XDA Member and frequent Xiaomi tipster kacskrz informed us that the latest MIUI Gallery app, v2.2.16.17, in the latest MIUI 12 China beta adds several new features. Here’s the translated changelog:

  1. The slide bar experience for quick preview of photos is upgraded
  2. Time album revision experience upgrade
  3. Upgraded experience of album free sorting function
  4. Add photo to text function (OCR)
  5. Add and edit night scene change
  6. Add editing filters, water green, smoke green, light summer, blue dream, water blue, mojito, quiet
  7. Optimized editing function experience
  8. Optimized photo album scanning speed
  9. Fix several bugs and improve the smooth experience of photo albums

OCR Support

There are a few things to note with this new update. One, the Gallery app now gains OCR (Optical Character Recognition) support. On images that have text previewed, you can use the OCR function to get the characters recognized as text.

Here is a quick demo of the OCR function:

The feature currently works rather slow, but that is because the image is uploaded to Xiaomi’s server for processing. The OCR function is also only supported by Xiaomi’s latest flagship smartphones running MIUI 12 China ROM.

Device Screenshot Frames

Device screenshot frames essentially add a model of a device to a screenshot, providing context and adding on to the aesthetics of the screenshot. There are plenty of external methods to add a device frame to a screenshot, and OnePlus TVs also feature similar functionality. Now, Xiaomi is baking in the functionality within the Gallery app, so you no longer have to rely on more time-consuming methods for the same.

Device screenshot frames have been added for:

We hope Xiaomi adds in frames for more devices in future versions.

New Sky Replacement Filters in MIUI Gallery

Sky Replacement Filters were added in last year as part of the photo editing functionality present within the MIUI Gallery app. With this feature, users can take images with a predominant sky element and swap it with a bunch of different presets depicting the sky in different scenes. The presets will not only alter the appearance of the sky but also add relevant lighting effects to the rest of the image and objects in order to better reflect the lighting condition had the sky been as it appears. A slider also lets users control this lighting effect.

In this new update to the Gallery app, Xiaomi is introducing several new sky replacement features:

Google People Cards are virtual visiting cards on Google Search

About six months after the feature was first spotted, Google is officially unveiling People Cards. Google mentions that searching for famous personalities presents familiar results, but searching for not-so-famous individuals may not showcase relevant information. So, to aid individuals who are looking to build their online presence, Google is rolling out People Cards, which are like virtual visiting cards where individuals can highlight their existing website of social profiles that they want people to visit.

To create a People Card, sign in to your Google Account, then either search for your name or enter “Add me to Search” in Google Search and then tap the prompt that appears. You can add an image, your Google account, a description of yourself, links to websites and social profiles, and if you wish, a phone number or email address.

Google mentions that they have a bunch of protections and controls in place to maintain the quality of information on People Cards. Only one People Card is allowed per Google Account, and a phone number is required to authenticate the account. There are other undisclosed mechanisms to protect against abusive or spammy content. And users can also submit feedback if they spot low-quality information or a card that is believed to have been created by an impersonator. Google will also allow users to delete their People Card if they no longer want to appear in Search.

For end-users, these new People Cards will make it quick and easy to find the right person. When searching for someone’s name and there is a card available, Google Search will display a module with the name, profession, and location, and users can tap to see the full information within the card. For people who share the same name, there will be multiple modules, and the information can help end users distinguish between the different individuals and find who they are looking for.

This feature is rolling out to users in India on mobile and in English.

POCO M2 Pro gets an unofficial LineageOS 17.1 and PitchBlack Recovery builds

The POCO M2 Pro (our review) may not feature a flagship chipset like the first-gen POCO F1 or even a high refresh rate display panel like the POCO X2, but the smartphone does offer some solid specifications for a very competitive price. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G SoC is specifically tuned for mobile gaming on a budget, while the massive 5,000 mAh battery with 33W fast charging support is capable enough to deliver a marathon battery life. Since the first POCO-branded device was quite a big hit among aftermarket development enthusiasts and custom ROM developers, we expect that this mid-ranger will continue that legacy. In fact, development on our forums has been in high gear right from the beginning, and here’s our first custom development roundup for the POCO M2 Pro.

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1

LineageOS is undoubtedly one of the most popular custom ROMs out there, and an unofficial build of the ROM is already available for this phone. Based on the contributions of XDA Recognized Developer erfanoabdi and Cosmin Tanislav AKA Demon000, XDA Senior Member ChaitanayaMittal has ported LineageOS 17.1, based on Android 10, to the POCO M2 Pro. Most of the features are reportedly working fine, however, it might not be ready yet to be a daily driver. If you’re a fan of the stock Android look, then head over to the thread linked below and follow the instructions to get the ROM up and running on your device.

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 for the POCO M2 Pro

Unofficial PitchBlack Recovery

If you wish to install the aforementioned LineageOS 17.1 build, you will first need a custom recovery on your device. Thankfully, an unofficial build of the PitchBlack Recovery (a fork of TWRP) is now available for the phone, courtesy of the same developer who compiled the LineageOS build. The recovery solution is also compatible with stock MIUI OTA packages, which means you can install incremental MIUI updates without modifying the updater script.

Nreal’s new augmented reality smart glasses will be bundled with a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 or LG Velvet on Korea’s LG U+

The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and LG Velvet are the latest and greatest Android smartphones from the two Korean tech giants, and both Samsung and LG are competing to offer the most value to consumers in their home country. When you purchase either device on South Korea’s LG U+ carrier, you’ll get a discount on the new Nreal Light augmented reality smart glasses as part of a promotional bundle.

The Nreal Light and 5G smartphone bundle bring the price of the glasses down to 349,000 KRW ($295) from 699,000 KRW ($586). Consumers can tether the glasses to the Samsung or LG device, allowing them to experience what the Nreal Light has to offer.

Nreal Light’s form factor offers all the hallmarks of a consumer-grade AR device that’s lightweight and compact enough to wear like sunglasses. Nreal Light offers 52 degree Field of View and a brilliant display, which simulates the experience of watching your favorite shows or playing games on a 100-inch Micro OLED screen. But with Nreal Light, the advantage is that you can enjoy the experience anywhere.

According to Nreal, its AR smartglasses transform 2D apps onto a user-defined 3D interface using a system named Nebula. Through Nebula, users can apparently arrange “dozens of screens” within their field of view, so they can do things such as watch shows and browse the internet at the same time.

Nreal Light UI

Hundreds of the world’s most popular apps will be available to use with Nreal Light at launch, including Google Chrome, Facebook, Instagram, and more. LG U+ will also launch a series of exclusive apps on Nreal Light later this year.

Nreal Light owners will get several accessories included with the smartglasses, such as a corrective lens frame and four different sized magnetically attachable nose pads. There’s also a VR Cover, which will block your view in an effort to offer an immersive VR experience for gaming and video.

Nreal Light consumer kit

Nreal calls the Nreal Light’s launch a “historic moment” in the world of smart glasses. Bundling them with two of the market’s biggest new smartphones and a 5G data plan will go a long way to elevating their chances of finding an audience, but whether they can go mainstream remains to be seen.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Forums ||| Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Forums ||| LG Velvet Forums

If you’re interested, you can purchase the bundle through LG U+ starting today, or you can buy the glasses by themselves at LG U+ retail locations on August 21. Though we saw Nreal at CES earlier this year, there’s no word yet on international availability for the Nreal Light.
