Full Samsung Galaxy Note 20 spec leak reveals the phone won’t have a 120Hz refresh rate display

We’re exactly two weeks away from Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event and the 5 devices they’re launching keep leaking online. Although we know that 5 devices will be announced, exactly which 5 devices will be shown off at the event are still up for debate, though we can safely rule out the Galaxy Z Flip 5G since it just got announced earlier this morning. One device we know for sure will show up at Galaxy Unpacked is the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, and today, we’re getting a closer look at the standard model.

Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Forums

Yesterday, we got a full look at the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra and its specifications. We had already seen a hands-on video and an official render straight from Samsung’s own website. While we know a lot about the Ultra, details of the smaller Galaxy Note 20 have mostly eluded us. We got our first look at it last week, and today we’re finally able to fill in a lot of the blanks thanks to Roland Quandt from WinFuture.

The smaller Galaxy Note 20 has a flat 6.7-inch FHD display at a 60Hz refresh rate rather than 120Hz like the Note 20 Ultra or Galaxy S20 series. The processor in European models will be the Exynos 990, and it will be accompanied by 8GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and a 4,300mAh battery. The 256GB will be the only storage option in Europe it seems.

In terms of cameras, we’re looking at a triple rear camera configuration consisting of a 12MP primary, 12MP wide-angle, and 64MP telephoto. The Galaxy Note 20 has a similar-looking triple-camera stack as the Ultra, but it’s much smaller. The S Pen on the smaller model will have 26ms response time, whereas the Ultra’s S Pen supports a much lower 9ms.

One last important tidbit is the build materials. While the smaller Note 20 will still have a metal frame, the back cover may actually be plastic instead of glass backed by Gorilla Glass 7 like on the Ultra. People hear “plastic” and automatically assume the worst, but it could still be a nice, high-quality, and durable plastic. Given these downgrades, we hope the standard model will be considerably cheaper than the Note 20 Ultra. However, we will have to wait and see, as WinFuture did not report any pricing information.

Google Messages RCS reactions and sticker suggestions are now official

The plainly named Messages app is now Google’s champion in its attempt to refocus its messy messaging strategy. A big part of that strategy is RCS support, which has been slowly rolling out to more people (despite carrier involvement). RCS is considered by some to be the iMessage equivalent for Android, and the latest update brings a very iMessage-like feature.

Earlier this summer, it was discovered that Google was working on emoji chat reactions for RCS conversations. Reactions are pretty common among other messaging services, including iMessage, and they allow you to react without actually sending a new message. Reactions are available now in conversations with “Chat” features enabled (RCS).

Next up is Smart Reply for stickers. The Smart Reply feature is something Google has included in several services, including Messages. It uses machine learning to suggest replies to messages. Now, Smart Reply will not only suggest text responses but also stickers. This can be toggled on or off in the settings.

Lastly, Google is highlighting some features that allow you to edit and play around with photos before sending them. This is another thing Google has been working on for a while. There are a few different pen options, including highlighter, pen, and marker. Text can be added and resized, dragged, and rotated around the image as well.

As mentioned, the reactions feature is limited to RCS conversations, but sticker suggestions and photo editing is available for everyone. Google continues to make Messages a worthy messaging app, but there’s still a lot of room for improvement.

Android 11 Beta 2.5 fixes Pixel 4 screen flickering and more

Earlier this month, Google released Android 11 Beta 2, the Platform Stability release. Like it did with the first beta, Google is now releasing a minor update to address some issues before the next main release. Android 11 Beta 2.5 brings some important fixes for the Pixel 4 and other Pixel devices.

Android 11 Beta 2.5 Release Notes:

General

• Fixed issues that prevented a user from hearing or recording audio in apps after they made a VoIP call.
• The notification drawer no longer fails to appear sometimes when a user swipes down from the top of the screen. (Issue #159768228)
• The screen no longer flickers on some devices when the screen is set to a low brightness level. (Issue #156051413)
• Fixed various issues that could cause devices to reboot intermittently. (Issue #159888167)
• The navigation bar no longer appears in cases when it wouldn’t normally display, such as during a device restart. (Issue #159592365)
• Some Pixel 4/XL devices that have taken more than one Android 11 update are no longer blocked from receiving an OTA back to Android 10. (Issue #158765677)

Google apps

• Video recording is no longer interrupted sometimes when using the Camera app. (Issue #159185509)
• The Dialer app no longer uses the speakerphone sometimes as the default audio device. (Issue #159203518)
• In the Messages app, the RCS chat features no longer get stuck sometimes in the Connecting state. (Issue #159786769)

Some Pixel 4 users were noticing screen flickering on Android 11 Beta 2 when the screen was at low-brightness. There was also a bug that prevented RCS chat from connecting. One of the most annoying bugs was video recording randomly stopping. All of these issues, and more, have been addressed. If you ever wonder about using the beta releases as your daily driver, let these minor updates be a sign that they are indeed beta releases.

T-Mobile’s first unified plan offers 4 lines of unlimited data for $100

Big news came to the US carrier ecosystem a few months back: Sprint and T-Mobile’s merger officially went through. The Sprint branding will be phased out gradually, and the new carrier will just be known as “T-Mobile.” This was big news as it meant that users of the “new T-Mobile” would be able to use both Sprint and T-Mobile’s existing infrastructure. The company has announced that Sprint stores will be switching over to T-Mobile branding on August 2nd. Now, the new mega-carrier is offering a unified plan for users of both Sprint and T-Mobile.

Starting on July 24th, T-Mobile will offer 4 lines of unlimited data for $25 each, totaling $100 per month. This plan also includes 5G connectivity, mind you, and the company will even throw in a Samsung Galaxy A71 5G—just in case you don’t already have a 5G device—if you pay a few more dollars each month. This sounds amazing on paper, but as always, there are some caveats to this. The main caveat being that you won’t be able to stream HD video through this plan: it will be capped at 480p resolution. If you want more, you’ll have to spring more money for the “Magenta Plus” plan. So while this plan is really cheap, especially because of the fact it includes 5G connectivity, just be mindful that it may not be for everyone.

Consumers of this plan may also be the first ones to be subject to network slowdowns during congestions. While all postpaid consumers may see their speeds reduced after going over 50GB in a month, T-Mobile says that consumers on these Essentials plans may see their speeds reduced at any time. So if you keep noticing speeds below what you expect, it may be time to switch to a more expensive plan.

Here are all the games that support the ASUS ROG Phone 3’s high refresh rate display

Building upon the success of last year’s ROG Phone II, Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer ASUS has now unveiled its latest flagship gaming smartphones — the ROG Phone 3 and ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition. While the new devices feature a familiar design language, ASUS has taken things up a notch on the hardware front. The flagship ROG Phone 3 is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, while the ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition is powered by the regular Snapdragon 865. Both the devices feature an impressive 6.59-inch 144Hz high refresh rate AMOLED display, with 10-bit HDR support and a peak brightness of 1000 nits, which means that gaming on the new ROG Phones is going to be a phenomenal experience.

However, in order to be able to make the most of the 144Hz display, game developers will have to explicitly support higher refresh rates. ASUS has already been working with developers to enable support with tools like the ROG Phone SDK for Unity and the company has previously maintained a list of games supporting over 60fps gameplay for last year’s ROG Phone II. The ASUS ROG Phone 3 comes with 3 months of free Stadia Pro

Taiwanese smartphone maker ASUS just unveiled its latest ROG branded gaming smartphones — the ROG Phone 3 and ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition. Out of the two, the ROG Phone 3 is the true successor to last year’s ROG Phone II, and it packs in top-of-the-line specifications, including Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 865 Plus chip, up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 512GB of fast UFS 3.1 storage.

As with previous devices in the ROG series, the ROG Phone 3 features a flashy design geared towards gamers, and it packs in a 6.59-inch 144Hz high-refresh-rate AMOLED display, an improved camera setup, a massive 6,000mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging, and a ton of software features to take your mobile gaming experience to the next level. Along with the devices, ASUS has also launched a bunch of accessories like the ROG Kunai 3 Gamepad, ROG Lighting Armor Case, TwinView Dock 3, a ROG Clip to attach the phone to select controllers, and a Mobile Desktop Dock.

In a bid to give potential buyers the best mobile gaming 1experience possible, ASUS is also offering three months of free Stadia Pro with the device. This will provide ROG Phone 3 users instant access to free games each month, exclusive discounts on select games purchased from the Stadia store, and support for gaming at up to 4K resolution with HDR support and 5.1 surround sound.

With the free three-month Stadia Pro subscription, ROG Phone 3 buyers will get access to popular titles like PUBG, Borderlands 3, Metro Exodus, Red Dead Redemption 2, The Elder Scrolls: Online, Assassins Creed Odyssey, and many more. The ROG Phone 3 will be available for purchase in Europe by the end of this month at a starting price of €999 for the 12GB/512GB variant. The 16GB/512GB variant has been priced at €1,099. The ROG Phone 3 Strix Edition 8GB/256GB will also be made available at €799.
