OnePlus smartphone owners: Here’s how to check the health of your battery

OnePlus, like most other Android device makers, doesn’t offer removable batteries on their smartphones. On a journey to make its smartphones slim as well as dust and water resistant, OnePlus made it really hard for a novice to swap out an older degraded battery for a new one without paying a visit to a service center. However, the company does have a really handy diagnostic app that can give users a clear insight into the health of their battery.

The app is called “OnePlus Diagnostic” with the package name com.oneplus.healthcheck, which comes as no surprise. Community members of XDA have been aware of this app for quite a long time as OnePlus itself published it on their Chinese support site. The app is compatible with both HydrogenOS and OxygenOS, and you can easily take a look at important battery parameters (e.g. capacity, temperature, charging state, etc.) through its clean and clutter-free UI. The screenshots attached below are from XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username‘s OnePlus 5T which he purchased in December of 2017. The OnePlus 5T supports 20W Dash Charging.

The value of the “Battery state” parameter is particularly appealing because it shows the battery wear level. Upon inspecting the app’s code, we discovered that the app reads the value from /sys/class/power_supply/bms/battery_health. Here “bms” stands for Battery Management System, while this value is reported by a battery fuel gauge IC made by Maxim Integrated. If that value is < 80, the app reports the battery as having a “serious loss” in capacity.

Some OnePlus devices such as the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro do not report the battery health at the aforementioned path of the sysfs virtual filesystem, so this app will fail to read it and display “no data”. This app won’t work if you aren’t running OxygenOS (or HydrogenOS) because it requires special privileges to be able to read /sys/class/power_supply/bms/battery_health. If you have a rooted phone, though, you can manually check that value by running the following command in a rooted shell or any terminal emulator app running in elevated mode:

cat /sys/class/power_supply/bms/battery_health

[Update: Available in Canada] Truly wireless Google Pixel Buds are officially available

Update (7/13/20 @ 11:10 AM ET): The new Google Pixel Buds are now available in Canada.

The second-generation Pixel Buds, which Google is referring to as the “new Pixel Buds,” were announced back in October 2019. Google promised they would be available in “Spring 2020” and here we are. The Pixel Buds 2 can be purchased starting today for $179, but only in one color option.

Unlike the first Pixel Buds, the 2nd-gen are “truly wireless.” There’s no cable running behind your neck that connects the two buds. The design aesthetic is very similar to the first generation, but the shape is different. There’s a wing to help hold the buds in your ears and a rubber tip to create a seal. In general, the Pixel Buds 2 have a more “sporty” shape that should make for a better fit when moving around.

The new Pixel Buds do still allow you to hear ambient noise through a spatial vent underneath the buds. Google has also included “Adaptive Sound,” which dynamically raises and lowers the volume of whatever is playing based on the amount of outside noise. Dual microphones should help make clear voice calls, and an accelerometer allows the earbuds to detect your voice based on vibrations in your jawbone, which could help in windy conditions.

Google claims the Pixel Buds 2 can stay connected through three rooms when indoors and across the length of an entire football field when outside. They can last for 5 hours on a single charge, with the wireless charging case providing a further 24 hours of playtime. Of course, Google Assistant is also present, just a “Hey Google” away. You can also have your notifications read aloud.

The Clearly White Pixel Buds 2 are available now in the US for $179 from the Google Store, Best Buy, and more retailers in the coming weeks. Almost Black, Quite Mint, and Oh So Orange won’t be available until the “coming months.”

Update: Available in Canada

Nearly 3 months after the initial release, Google has finally launched the new truly wireless Pixel Buds in Canada. They come in Clearly White, Quite Mint, and Almost Black, though white is the only color available right now. You can buy them right now for $239.

Truly wireless OnePlus Buds will be unveiled on July 21st

It’s been a while since we last talked about OnePlus’s upcoming truly wireless earbuds. The last rumor was back in May and it pegged the unnamed earbuds for a July launch. Today, the company has confirmed the announcement date and the “OnePlus Buds” name.

OnePlus sent out a tweet this morning to confirm the “OnePlus Buds” name for its first truly wireless earbuds. Previously, it was speculated that they would fall under the “Bullets” branding. Along with the name confirmation, OnePlus also gave us a firm announcement date: July 21st. That means they will be shown off alongside the OnePlus Nord.

OnePlus has released a couple of versions of its Bullets-branded wireless earphones. All three generations have had the same design: earbuds connected with a wire that drapes behind your neck. They’re “wireless” in the sense that nothing is physically connected to your phone. The OnePlus Buds, however, have no wires and a design more closely related to Apple Airpods.

The OnePlus Nord won’t be available in all markets, but we’ll likely see the OnePlus Buds get a wider release. Truly wireless earbuds are a very hot product category right now and it makes sense for OnePlus to jump onboard. We’ll have to wait and see if they bring anything unique to the table.

Moto G 5G Plus and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite forums are now open

Motorola recently announced its 5G device mid-ranger called Moto G 5G Plus. Xiaomi, on the other hand, launched Mi 10 Note 10 Lite back in April as a stripped-down version of last year’s Mi Note 10. Besides equally mouthful names, the two phones also share the starting price of €349 (~$395). While the Moto G 5G Plus focusses on 5G connectivity and great performance for the price, the Mi Note 10 Lite is a photography-centric device with its 64MP quad-camera setup and features a more premium-looking glass design. We’re now opening up XDA Forums for both devices where users can find custom ROMs and other mods as well as discuss any issues regarding the devices.

The Moto G 5G Plus runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 mobile platform that comes with an onboard Snapdragon X52 5G modem with support for the sub-6GHz 5G network. Google Chrome in Lite Mode will stream videos in low resolution to save data

Back in April last year, Google introduced a new “Lite Mode” in Google Chrome which replaced the browser’s Data Saver feature. The Lite Mode aimed to improve Google Chrome’s performance on budget Android devices and reduce data consumption by compressing pages on the company’s servers before pushing them to a device. Now, in an attempt to further increase data savings, Google is adding a new LiteVideos feature to Lite Mode in Chrome for Android.

According to a recent report from Techdows, the new feature is expected to make its way over to the stable channel with Google Chrome 86 and it will help users save more data by instructing media players on individual websites to stream at the lowest resolution possible. To do so, the Lite Videos feature will simulate “low bandwidth conditions by throttling media responses” and therefore allow “MSE Video players to lower resolution and consume less data.

The report further notes that the new feature won’t be limited to the Android version of the browser and it will also be available on Chrome for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chrome OS. The experimental flags to enable the new feature are already available on the Chrome Canary channel and you can try it out for yourself by downloading the app from the Play Store link below.

Once you have the app installed, you’ll have to head over to chrome://flags, enable the “Enable LiteVideos” and “Force LiteVideos decision” flags, and then restart the browser for the changes to take effect. With the flags enabled, Chrome will automatically instruct media players to use lower bitrates and run videos at the lowest possible resolution once the LiteMode is turned on. It’s worth mentioning that the feature will be automatically deactivated when you reload a page or navigate forward/back in the browser. The feature is expected to hit the stable channel later this year in October.

Download: MIUI 12 stable update rolling out to several Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices

MIUI 12 is the newest big release for Xiaomi smartphones, perhaps even bigger than an Android version jump. Features on Xiaomi devices are dictated more by their MIUI versions than the underlying Android version, so a MIUI version upgrade is an exciting event. The first batch of devices to receive the MIUI 12 stable update included the Xiaomi Mi 9, Redmi K20/Mi 9T, and Redmi K20 Pro/Mi 9T Pro. As we reach the end of June 2020, Xiaomi’s first phase of MIUI 12 rollout is complete, as many more devices have been added since the initial rollout. Another important point to note: Xiaomi follows only a thin distinction between “beta stable” update and “stable” updates. Beta stable updates are only intended for users enrolled within the Mi Pilot beta testing program, meaning that builds assigned for this group will not install on devices with Mi Accounts that do not have the requisite permission. Once the Mi Pilot beta testers give positive feedback, the same build then gets opened up as stable release, creating a lot of confusion — for instance, the same builds linked below might first fail to install, but then they will make an appearance through the official OTA. If you get the error message that the update is for closed beta testers only, you can sideload the update through TWRP.

Flashing Instructions for MIUI 12

Note that these are generic flashing instructions that should generally be applicable across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO devices. However, there is a possibility that there is a variation that is unique to your device, so we strongly advise visiting your device forums for device-specific instructions.

Recovery ROM Installation

Recovery ROMs come with a .zip file extension and can be installed either through the Local Update method from within MIUI, or through the Xiaomi stock recovery. You can also use a custom recovery like TWRP for installing these ROMs, though do note that device-specific instructions may differ in that case.

  1. Local Update method:
    1. Transfer the download .zip file to your phone, and ensure you place the file in the “downloaded_rom” folder in the internal storage of your device. If no such folder exists, create one in your internal storage base directory.
    2. Within your phone, navigate to Settings > About Phone > System Update, and then press the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, and select “Choose Update Package”.
    3. If the “Choose Update Package” option is missing, tap on the MIUI logo 10 times to activate the option.
    4. Choose the downloaded .zip file.
    5. Wait for the update to install.
  2. Recovery method:
    1. Rename the downloaded .zip file to update.zip and transfer it to the base directory of your phone’s internal storage.
    2. Reboot your phone into recovery mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and the Volume Up buttons together.
    3. Scroll to the “Install update.zip” option using the volume keys, and select the option using the power button.
    4. Wait for the update to install.
    5. Choose the “Reboot” option if your phone does not reboot by itself after installation is completed.

Fastboot ROM Installation

Fastboot ROMs come with a .tgz file extension and require a Windows computer for the installation, as well as a phone with an unlocked bootloader. However, despite being comparatively more complicated to install than Recovery ROMs, Fastboot ROMs are sometimes the only way to boot into a working system. For instructions on unlocking the bootloader of your phone, check your device’s subforums on XDA.

  1. Download MiFlash Tool on your Windows computer. The latest version can be found in Step 1 of this link. Once downloaded, extract the tool and install it. It is also advisable to have ADB and Fastboot installed, just in case you need it.
  2. Reboot your phone into Download mode by powering it off and then pressing both the Power and Volume Down buttons together.
  3. Connect your phone to the computer using the appropriate USB cable.
  4. Download the Fastboot ROM .tgz file and extract it. Remember the extract location, as you will need to paste the address into MiFlash Tool.
  5. Run MiFlash Tool on your Windows Computer and in the address bar within the tool, paste the extract location from Step 4.
  6. Click “Refresh” within MiFlash and the app should automatically recognize your device.
  7. Click “Run” within MiFlash to flash the ROM file to the device.
  8. The progress bar within MiFlash will turn green, which indicates that the ROM was successfully installed. Your device should boot automatically to the new version.
