Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom add lens correction profiles for the Huawei P40 Pro, Apple iPhone SE, iPad Pro, and more

A number of premium and mid-range smartphones these days feature a Pro mode in the camera app that lets users make manual adjustments to the ISO, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure while capturing images. More often than not, the Pro mode also includes a RAW image capture setting that lets users save captured images as .dng files. While there are many benefits to capturing images in the RAW format, it does have a few drawbacks. For instance, when you capture images in a common format like JPEG, the smartphone can automatically correct geometric distortions or exposure issues in the images. However, when you capture RAW images, these issues aren’t fixed automatically. To address this issue, Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom offer device-specific lens correction profiles for several Android smartphones that you can use to quickly correct your images.

Earlier this year in March, Adobe released lens correction profiles for a couple of newly released devices like the OnePlus 7T, Huawei Mate 30 Pro, and the LG G8 ThinQ. Now, the company has added profiles for even more devices that are supported in Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and the Camera Raw plugin. The list of newly supported devices includes:

  • Apple iPad (6th generation) back camera (JPEG)
  • Apple iPad (7th generation) back camera (JPEG)
  • Apple iPad Air (3rd generation) back camera (JPEG)
  • Apple iPad Mini (5th generation) back camera (JPEG)
  • Apple iPhone SE back camera (DNG+JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPad Pro (11-inch, 2nd generation) wide-angle camera (JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPad Pro (11-inch, 2nd generation) main camera (DNG+JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPad Pro (11-inch, 2nd generation) front camera (JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 4th generation) wide-angle camera (JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 4th generation) main camera (DNG+JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPad Pro (12.9-inch, 4th generation) front camera (JPEG+HEIC)
  • Apple iPod Touch back camera (JPEG)
  • Huawei P40 Pro front camera (JPEG)
  • Huawei P40 Pro rear main camera (DNG+JPEG)
  • Huawei P40 Pro rear telephoto camera (DNG+JPEG)
  • Huawei P40 Pro rear wide camera (DNG+JPEG)

It’s worth noting that these lens correction profiles are also supported in Adobe’s Photoshop Express and Lightroom apps on Android. In case you’re not sure if Adobe offers a lens correction profile for your device, you can follow this link and search for your device in the list of supported devices.

OPPO demonstrates some of its potential new camera tech at CVPR 2020

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO has demonstrated some of its potential new camera technologies at the Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) Conference 2020, which have earned the company two first-place and two-third place awards at the event. The technologies that won the awards include perceptual extreme super-resolution technology, visual localization, and human activity recognition in videos.

Perceptual Extreme Super-Resolution

During the event, OPPO’s Research team was challenged to solve the problem of perceptual extreme super-resolution for a single image with a 16x magnification factor. The aim of the challenge was to develop an AI model capable of producing high-resolution results with the best perceptual quality and similarity to the ground truth. For the challenge, OPPO’s team demonstrated the effectiveness of its RFB-ERSGAN neural network which delivered the following results:

OPPO RFB-ERSGAN neural network

OPPO’s neural network helped the company beat 280 other participants and secure the first place in the challenge. According to a press release on the matter, the neural network will be applied in a number of scenarios, including smartphones, where it will be able to help change low-resolution photos taken by the smartphone to high-resolution images with greater details. Other potential applications include restoring old or damaged photos, refining important medical images, or conducting a detailed analysis of satellite images.

Visual Localization for Handheld Devices

In the Visual Localization for Handheld Devices challenge, OPPO created a monocular visual localization pipeline that leverages semantic and depth cues to find the precise location of any given image. OPPO’s solution helped the company secure the first-place for outdoor visual localization and the third-place for indoor visual localization.

OPPO visual localization

Potential use cases for this technology include augmented reality applications, intelligent robotics, or precise navigations. The company claims that an AI assistant equipped with a camera will be able to utilize the technology to analyze images and achieve accurate positioning, allowing it to guide users in the right direction.

Activity Detection in Extended Videos

OPPO also secured the third-place in the Activity Detection in Extended Videos challenge, which required companies to design automatic activity detection algorithms. OPPO’s solution is designed to effectively identify and reorganize the characters in each frame and recognize dozens of human activities in complex dynamic videos.

OPPO activity detection in extended videos

The technology is expected to play an important role in the field of human-computer interaction and sports video analysis in the future. Additionally, the technology may also be found in future smartphones that will allow them to automatically identify moving subjects and adjust the camera focus accordingly.

The AliExpress 618 summer sale event begins on June 15th and continues through June 21s. It is one of the two biggest China-originated online shopping festivals of the year. This year especially when shopping online seems to be a safer and cheaper choice for most consumers, the 618 Summer Sale event seems to be extremely ambitious with their discount strength being the biggest so far. This includes several competitive discounts and high-value coupons for some of their bestsellers like the Huawei Watch GT2, of which the final checkout price can be even less than half of the original retail price.

Realme X3 and X3 SuperZoom with 120Hz display, Snapdragon 855+ launching in India on June 25

Realme has been aggressively launching products in the Indian market. The only break that occurred in their launch schedule was because of the unavoidable circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. Realme is now looking forward to launching the Realme X3 and the Realme X3 SuperZoom in India.

The Realme X3 SuperZoom has already been launched in Europe in May 2020, so we have a fair idea of what to expect out of this smartphone. The highlight of this device is the fact that it comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ SoC, a 120Hz LCD display, and a periscope shooter. The SoC choice is particularly interesting in this case because flagships with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 have been prohibitively expensive. With the Snapdragon 855+ at the fore, Realme will be able to offer an exciting user experience while still maintaining a good price point. The 12GB/256GB variant of the device was launched for €499 in Europe, which converts into ~₹42,750 at current conversion rates. Realme could possibly offer a lower RAM variant in India. That, coupled with the government incentives, could give us a lower price point in the country.

In addition to the Realme X3 SuperZoom, Realme is also teasing the Realme X3. Previous reports suggest that the device will come with the same Snapdragon 855+ SoC, as well as the 120Hz display. Changes are expected on the camera setup and possibly on lower-tech RAM and storage.

Realme X3 SuperZoom XDA Forums

Curiously, we have evidence of the existence of a third device, in the form of the Realme X3 Pro. However, Realme’s current teasers make no mention of the launch of the Realme X3 Pro in the country. We’ll find out which devices actually get launched on June 25.

EMUI 10.1 MeeTime app

The update also includes Huawei’s alternative to the Google Assistant, called Celia. The voice assistant can help you with regular daily tasks, such as initiating phone calls and texts, setting up reminders and calendar appointments, start voice recording, translate sentences, play music, videos, toggle devices settings, and flashlight, and search for information on the web. The voice assistant has already rolled out on the Huawei P40 series and will soon make its way over to older devices with the EMUI 10.1 update.

Furthermore, the EMUI 10.1 update will bring useful features like multi-screen collaboration, new fingerprint animations, and cross-device photo gallery to the aforementioned devices.

Realme reveals Android 10 schedule for the C2, wireless charger availability, and more

After a two month hiatus, Realme India’s CEO Madhav Sheth recently returned with another episode of AskMadhav — the company’s video Q&A series on YouTube. In the latest episode, Sheth revealed a ton of information about upcoming software updates for some of the company’s products and hinted at a couple of new products that will be added to its portfolio later this year.

Starting with software updates, Sheth confirmed that the budget-friendly Realme C2 from last year will receive the Realme UI update based on Android 10 in September. With the update, C2 users will get access to all the new features Google introduced in Android 10, coupled with the new UI design and features included in the company’s latest Android skin.

Realme recently released a flash tool for installing ColorOS/Realme UI updates on its devices. However, at the moment, the flash tool is only compatible with the X50 Pro. In the video, Sheth confirmed that the company will be adding support for more Realme devices running Android 10 shortly. The company will make an announcement on the Realme community forums as soon as the flash tool receives support for more devices.

Speaking of the Realme Band, Sheth revealed that the music controls feature, which was promised in a previous episode, has already started rolling out to users via an OTA update. He further added that the company is working on new watch faces for the fitness band, which will be rolled out to users “very soon.” Additionally, Sheth confirmed that the company is working on an improved notification management system for the Realme Watch. Talking about upcoming devices, Sheth revealed that a new 55-inch ‘flagship’ Realme TV will be launched in India next month, and the company will be launching a wireless charger in the country this month.
