The latest version of Xiaomi’s custom Android skin – MIUI 12 – is finally here. The company has dropped the curtain yesterday, alongside the Mi 10 Youth Edition launch event in China. Compared to MIUI 11, the stable version of which was released less than six months ago, MIUI 12 brings in a slew of improvements, visual overhauls, and many new features. We have already extracted the new wallpapers, and now we are presenting the downloading links of the first set of MIUI 12 beta firmware packages for a bunch of Xiaomi and Redmi devices.

It is worth mentioning that these closed beta builds are meant for the Chinese variants, as Xiaomi suspended the rollout of MIUI global beta since last year. As a consequence, you have to flash these recovery ROMs using TWRP to bypass the MIUI beta account whitelisting. Do not expect Google Play Services or any pre-installed Google apps in them. Language options are likely limited to English and Chinese only, too. Xiaomi did launch MIUI 12 globally, and we are waiting for builds to appear for that too. Meanwhile, you can try out the closed betas from China.

The beta MIUI 12 builds listed below are based on either Android Pie or Android 10, depending on the device.

You can download the latest beta (20.6.11) of MIUI 12 for your device from the links below. You can also visit our linked forums in case you need further assistance. While all of these download links are directly from Xiaomi, users are advised to proceed at their own risk. We warn you once again, this is not intended for the average consumer and is recommended only for users comfortable with flashing ROMs.

Samsung certification confirms a 5G Galaxy Z Flip is coming

After months of leaks and rumors, Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip at the Galaxy Unpacked event earlier this year in February. Unlike Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S20 lineup, the Galaxy Z Flip featured last year’s Snapdragon 855+ chip and it didn’t include 5G support. However, over the last few weeks, there have been rumors that the company is working on a 5G version of the foldable device. The rumors are mostly based on the fact that the company has started software development for a Galaxy smartphone with the model name “SM-F707B”.

Since the original Galaxy Z Flip goes by the model number “SM-F700”, it was believed that the “SM-F707B” is a successor to the Z Flip, as “SM-F” has been reserved for Samsung’s foldable devices so far. For instance, the Galaxy Fold has the model number SM-F900. On top of that, the “B” in “SM-F707B” is believed to signify that this Galaxy Z Flip successor will support 5G connectivity. The reasoning commonly given for this assumption is that Samsung has previously appended “B” to the model names of devices with 5G support, such as in the case of the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G (SM-G977B) and the Samsung Galaxy A90 5G (SM-A908B). However, the existence of SM-707B firmware isn’t confirmation that there’s a 5G Galaxy Z Flip and the “B” at the end isn’t always used for 5G Galaxy smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G

Now, though, we have pretty definitive evidence that there is indeed a 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip in the pipeline, which goes by the model number SM-F707B. We’ve spotted a certification filing online, submitted by Samsung themselves, which ties the marketing name and model number together. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the certification filing mentions the commercial name Galaxy Z Flip 5G and the product name SM-F707B. It’s worth noting that the filing was spotted on the same certification source that has previously helped us confirm that the OPPO Find X2 Neo is the same device as the Chinese Reno3 Pro and that the Galaxy A71s 5G would feature support for Verizon’s mmWave network. Therefore, we have no doubts regarding its credibility.

OnePlus may be working on a feature to help you find public charging stations

It’s the month of exciting software releases, as Google dropped the first Android 11 Beta for Pixel devices. Other OEMs like Vivo, iQOO, and OnePlus have released the first set of beta builds for their flagships, and other OEMs like OPPO, Xiaomi, POCO and Realme have promised builds for their flagships as well. These software builds are a good medium for app developers to test out their apps on the latest Android version. But in addition to this, they are also a good source of information on what features to expect out of phones in the near future. We recently spotted the new OnePlus 8 “Ice Blue” color, the 65W Warp Charging feature, and the OnePlus Pods truly wireless earphones in the software build released by OnePlus. Now, we have information that OnePlus is working on a feature to help you find public charging stations.

XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username discovered new strings in the Settings app within the Android 11 Beta 1 for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

<string name="op_charging_Station_mute_notifications">Mute Notifications</string>
<string name="op_charging_station">Charging Stations</string>
<string name="op_charging_station_no_station">No charging stations nearby</string>
<string name="op_charging_station_summary">Notify when there is a charging station nearby</string>
<string name="op_charging_stations">Charging stations</string>
<string name="op_charging_stations_off_description">To find the charging stations, location permission is required to detect BLE beacons. Please provide access to location to start using this feature.</string>
<string name="op_charging_stations_off_header">To find the charging stations, location permission is required to detect BLE beacons. Please provide access to location to start using this feature.</string>
<string name="op_find_charging_stations">Find Stations</string>

The description within these strings indicates that OnePlus is working on building a network of Charging Stations to help its users quickly top up their phones. These Charging Stations will be equipped with BLE beacons that will let them broadcast their identifier to nearby devices (OnePlus phones in this case) and have their location pinpointed to the user. Of course, when the user reaches there, they can charge their device.

We found a graphic asset within the Settings app that gives us a better idea of what to expect:

Digging deeper within the Beta, we discovered that OnePlus has several classes related to this “charging station” feature. These classes include:

  • OPChargingStationPrefController
  • OPChargingStationHeaderController — which has code for getting the distance from the charging station, and the charging station’s name
  • OPChargingStationSettings — which has code for toggling a mute option for notifications so the user will not be bothered by charging station notifications anymore

The Beta also has several references to a package name called “com.oneplus.chargingpilar“, which indicates that there will be a companion application needed for this feature to work. We also found several settings preferences related to this feature, including:

  • op_charging_stations_feature_on
  • op_charging_station_beacon_name
  • op_charging_station_beacon_distance
  • op_charging_stations_mute_notification

This does indicate that the feature would also need to be turned on within the app.

We do not know when OnePlus will announce its Charging Station network, but the presumed OnePlus 8T launch seems like a good time for the same. Keeping in mind that OnePlus is also working on 65W Warp Charging, the Charging Station network could help cement charging upgrades as a highlight feature on the upcoming device series.

However, we do not know at what speeds these Charging Stations would provide, nor do we know whether they will be restricted to newer smartphones. Since we presume that these are physical structures with plug points and/or empty USB ports, it would be a fair assumption that anyone with any smartphone could walk up to these stations for charging their smartphone. The locator could simply help OnePlus users locate these easily through their smartphones. Similar installations already exist at public places like airports and malls, so one can presume that OnePlus will add some uniqueness to their implementation.

The Beta contains no further clues on the regions where this feature would be made available, but the plug point pictured in the graphics looks like the Indian plug point (Type D) — though this might just be intended as a generic image.

We also do not know if OnePlus would pre-load the companion application onto its phones, or if it would be an optional download from the Play Store for its phones and others.

We’ve reached out to OnePlus India for comment. We’ll update the article with their response.

Thanks to XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username for the tip!

Samsung announces a new Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Buds+ themed after Korean band BTS

While a few Chinese smartphone manufacturers are catering to anime fans by launching Neon Genesis Evangelion and One Piece-themed versions of their devices, Samsung has teamed up with K-pop sensation BTS to launch new BTS-themed versions of its flagship Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy Buds+. We first got a look at the new BTS Edition Galaxy devices earlier this month when XDA Editor-in-Chief Mishaal Rahman and XDA TV Video Producer Max Weinbach shared renders of the devices over on Twitter.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition Samsung Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition

At the time, we had reason to believe that the BTS-themed Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Buds+ would be launched on July 7th. However, Samsung has now officially unveiled the devices and they will go on sale in several markets around the world, starting from July 9th. According to a recent update on Samsung Newsroom, the Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will be available for pre-order from June 15th, exclusively on Weverse, while the Galaxy S2o+ 5G BTS Edition, Galaxy S20+ BTS Edition, and the Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will be available for pre-order on Samsung.com from June 19th.

On the surface, the Galaxy S20+ 5G BTS Edition and Galaxy S20 BTS Edition have received a new purple paint-job, which looks quite a lot like the purple color variant of the Galaxy Z Flip. In terms of software, the devices include pre-installed BTS-inspired themes and a fan community platform, Weverse. The devices also get BTS-themed packaging, decorative stickers, and photo cards featuring pictures of the band members.

Samsung Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition

Similarly, the Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition gets a purple paint job, along with the brand’s logo and purple heart iconography. Much like the smartphones, the BTS-themed TWS earphones will come with BTS-themed packaging and photo cards of the band members in the box.

In a statement regarding the new product lineup, Stephanie Choi, Senior Vice President and Head of Global Marketing Team of the Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics, was quoted saying, “Galaxy S20+ and Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition are the result of a collaboration between BTS, whose members spread messages of love and harmony through music, and Samsung, which is creating a better future with meaningful innovation. We hope it will be a source of joy and entertainment for fans and consumers around the world.”

The Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G, Galaxy S20+, and Galaxy Buds+ BTS Edition will go on sale starting from July 9th, which marks the seventh anniversary of the BTS fan collective. As of now, we don’t have information regarding the pricing and regional availability of the devices.

Google introduces Play Billing Library version 3 and plans to make App Bundles a requirement in 2021

In-app purchases. As much as some may hate them, they’re definitely here to stay. They’re not without their advantages, though. An in-app purchase allows a developer to provide free and paid versions of their app without actually having to maintain two separate applications. If you publish your app on the Play Store, Google generally requires that your in-app purchases go through them (because of the 30% cut they get).

Thankfully, Google does make it pretty easy to set up in-app purchases with all the fun stuff like license verification. Developers can simply implement the Google Play Billing Library, and they’re pretty much set. In an effort to make handling in-app purchases even easier, Google has announced version 3 of the Play Billing Library with some new features and improvements as well as an important policy change.

Google Play Billing Library v3 – What’s changing

Cash Payments

Version 3 of Google’s Play Billing Library allows users to pay in cash. This may sound pretty weird, but it’s probably not what you’re thinking. There are still a lot of places in the world where credit cards and bank accounts just aren’t that common. This feature is meant to work around this issue.

Instead of clicking a “buy” button in an app and paying with your credit card, you can choose to pay with cash. Once you confirm the purchase, Google shows you a code. Take that code to the nearest participating convenience store, give them the right amount of cash, and then your purchase will be unlocked.

Currently, this feature is only live in Indonesia and Malaysia, but a wider rollout is planned. Developers will also soon be able to add this payment method to their apps.

Google Play Billing Library cash payments

Easier Promo Code Redemption

Developers can choose to provide promo codes for their apps. If it’s a paid app, the promo code can allow the user to get the app for free. If the app has in-app purchases or subscriptions, the promo code can provide a free item or a free subscription trial. While it’s always been possible to redeem app promo codes directly in the Play Store, to redeem a subscription trial, you previously had to download the app.

Now, though, Google Play Billing Library version 3 has added the ability to redeem in-app promotions directly from the Play Store itself; the users don’t even need to download the app they apply to.

Purchase Attribution

If an app or game has a bunch of different things you can purchase in it, the developer needs some way to keep track of who purchased what. Before now, a developer would have to build a custom solution using a now-deprecated AIDL framework. With Google Play Billing Library version 3, however, there’s now native support for purchase attribution, allowing developers to easily keep track of what’s being bought.

Library Version Requirements

If you’re reading this article, you probably know about Google Play’s minimum SDK version requirements for publishing on the store. Currently, apps have to target at least API 28 (Android Pie) to be published on Google Play, and this requirement increases each year.

There’s now a similar requirement for developers implementing the Google Play Billing Library. To publish an app using this library on the Play Store, it needs to be using a relatively recent version. Right now, all versions of the Play Billing Library are allowed, but starting August 2, 2021, all newly published apps will have to use at least version 3. Existing apps will have until November 1, 2021, before they have to upgrade.

Google Play Billing Library versioning lifecycle

Migration Guide

Since using the newer versions of the Play Billing Library is now a requirement, Google has published a migration guide to help developers get up-to-date. This guide shows how to implement the newest version of the library, and what developers need to change to use it.

You can check out the migration guide here. There’s also a video guide if that’s more helpful to you.

And that’s it for now about the new Google Play Billing Library. If you implement in-app-purchases and your app is on the Google Play Store, you should probably consider updating your billing library implementation if you haven’t already.

Mandatory Android App Bundles for Newly Published Apps in 2021

Section by Mishaal Rahman

At Google I/O 2018, Google introduced an alternative app distribution format called the Android App Bundle with the file extension .aab. The goal of the Android App Bundle is to reduce the file size of the final Android Application Package (.apk) delivered to the user, reducing the installation size and download time for users. The .aab file contains APK files for the base application and all supported architectures (ARM, ARM64, and x86), languages, and layout variants. This format requires giving a copy of your app’s signing key to Google so the Google Play Developer Console can generate a bundle with signed versions of each APK in the bundle; the correct APK for a particular device’s architecture, language, and layout are delivered via Google Play Dynamic Delivery.

Developers can deploy Android App Bundles in Android Studio, Unity, or Flutter, and although large app bundles with installed APK sizes of up to 500MB are supported, OBB files are not supported. As an alternative, Google recently extended Android App Bundles with the introduction of Play Asset Delivery for game developers to dynamically deliver large game assets. With all of these improvements as a backdrop, Google now plans to make Android App Bundles a requirement for newly published applications on the Google Play Store.

In the “What’s new in Google Play” video published last week on the Android Developers YouTube channel (via AndroidPolice), Googler Milena Nikolic announced that app bundle support will be required for new apps on Google Play. No specific date was given for this new requirement, though we know it will happen sometime in 2021.

Google Android App Bundle requirement

Most developers and end-users won’t notice any changes brought about by this new requirement, but that doesn’t mean that nobody will notice. Developers will have to give a copy of their signing key to Google for them to sign applications, which some developers may have qualms with. The further proliferation of AABs will make redistribution on different platforms more difficult, reducing downloads and thus potential ad revenue. (For developers, they can use Google’s open-source bundletool to build their own AABs, extract them, and then upload them to other platforms.) AABs are also harder for users to manually sideload as they aren’t natively supported by Android’s package installer and must be unpacked.

We will hopefully learn more about this new requirement as we approach 2021.
