T-Mobile OnePlus 8 gets Google Live Caption and 5G support on bands 2, 66 with latest OxygenOS update

The T-Mobile OnePlus 8 is receiving its first OxygenOS update in the US.  The update bumps the security patch level, adds support for additional 5G bands, and fixes general bugs. This is a relatively minor update compared to the one rolled out to the unlocked Indian/EU/North American OnePlus 8 units which brought along many enhancements and improvements.

OnePlus 8 XDA Forums

The T-Mobile OnePlus 8 update comes with the software version number 10.5.8.IN55CB. It is 308MB in size and also packs the April 2020 security patches. Most notably, the update adds support for two additional Sub-6GHz 5G bands: n2 and n66, bringing the total number of 5G band support to five on this phone. The phone already supports T-Mobile’s low-band 5G on n71 band and Sub-6GHz 5G through n41 and n5 bands out-of-the-box.

The update also brings support for Google’s Live Caption feature which automatically displays subtitles when you’re playing a video, podcast or a voice message on your phone. The Live Caption was rolled out to the unlocked OnePlus 8 with the first OxygenOS update and it’s also available on last year’s OnePlus 7 series.

The full update changelog for the T-Mobile OnePlus 8 is as follows:

  • 5G support for bands 2 and 66
  • Google live caption
  • General improvement and fixes

T-Mobile hasn’t updated its software tracker page with the rollout details yet so this doesn’t appear to be a wider rollout at this stage. Unfortunately we haven’t gotten our hands on a direct OTA download link yet so you’ll have to wait for the automatic rollout to hit your device. Alternatively, you can also head to Settings > System Updates to manually check the update status.

The T-Mobile OnePlus 8 differs from the standard OnePlus 8 in that it has an IP (Ingress Protection) rating and only comes in 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. T-Mobile is also the exclusive U.S. carrier of the Interstellar Glow color. Finally, unlike the Verizon OnePlus 8, the T-Mobile OnePlus lacks mmWave 5G support.

Google Chrome supports “Windows Hello” face unlock and fingerprint for payment authentication

In an attempt to streamline the payments process in Google Chrome on Windows 10, Google is now rolling out support for Windows Hello biometric authentication in the browser. The feature, which was recently spotted by a user on Twitter, will allow you to authenticate purchases on Google Chrome using Windows Hello’s fingerprint or face recognition.

In case you own a Windows Hello capable device, you can enable the feature in Google Chrome by heading over to the Settings page in the browser and selecting Payment Methods. Here, tap on the toggle next to the Windows Hello option to enable the feature. Once the feature is enabled, Chrome will bring up a Windows Hello prompt every time you select a card to make a payment on the browser. Clicking on the Use Windows Hello button in the prompt will then allow you to enter your card’s CVC number using either facial recognition or the fingerprint scanner.

As of now, we can’t be sure when exactly Google enabled the feature in Chrome as a post on the Google Support forum suggests that it’s been around since March. It’s also worth noting that XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username also spotted the feature in Chrome Canary v82.0.4085.4 all the way back on March 14th. The feature appears to have been enabled by a server-side update and should be available for all Google Chrome users running the latest build of the browser.

Samsung Galaxy S20 series gets quicker autofocus and other improvements with latest update

The Samsung Galaxy S20 series has received several software updates since its launch to improve the camera performance, especially the department of autofocus. Now the company is rolling out a new build of the system software for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20 Ultra, which brings an updated stock camera app as well as an improved kernel that contains a number of under-the-hood enhancements.

Galaxy S20/S20+/S20 Ultra XDA Forums

Buy from Amazon.in — Samsung Galaxy: S20 || S20+ || S20 Ultra

It is worth mentioning that Samsung started pushing the May 2020 Android security patches to the Galaxy S20 lineup at the end of April in the form of software version G98xxXXS2ATD5, but the rollout was limited to a handful of regions. The latest build, i.e. software version G98xxXXU2ATE6, is intended for a much more broad scale rollout, as it is already available in various countries across South America, Africa, and Asia. Due to the fact that the updates are cumulative in nature, the ATE6 build is carrying the same May 2020 patches and additionally bumps the camera app version from 10.0.03.2 to 10.0.03.10.

The camera autofocus issues should be gone for good, as confirmed by several users on Reddit. The fingerprint unlocking mechanism is reportedly improved as well, albeit the fingerprint animation is slightly off-center. Samsung also introduces a new camera functionality called “Close-up Zoom” on the Galaxy S20 Ultra with this update. The mode gets automatically triggered whenever you are trying to take a picture of a very close object, thus you can think of it as a substitute for a dedicated macro lens.

galaxy_s20_ultra_close_up_zoom_ate6

Experienced users can download the new build right away from Samsung’s updater server using tools like Frija and flash it on their devices, but there is a catch. The current software version is not yet available for the Snapdragon 865-powered US S20 variants, and the downloadable Exynos, and Korean Snapdragon firmware packages are not compatible with those units.

ASUS ZenFone 7 and ROG Phone III will reportedly launch around July

At the Snapdragon Tech Summit last year, Qualcomm announced its latest flagship chipset — the Snapdragon 865. Since then, we’ve seen the chipset on a couple of devices, including the OnePlus 8 series, the OPPO Find X2 series, the Xiaomi Mi 10 series, Realme X50 Pro, the iQOO 3, among others. Earlier this year in February, Qualcomm also released a list of 19 announced and upcoming devices that would feature the Snapdragon 865 SoC. This included the yet unannounced ASUS ROG Phone III and ASUS ZenFone 7. While we still haven’t heard anything about the devices from ASUS, a recent report from Taiwanese publication Commercial Times claims that the devices will be launched around July this year.

The report states that the ZenFone 7 and ROG Phone III will be launched towards the end of the second quarter or early in the third quarter of 2020, with ASUS expecting a 30-50% growth in sales for its upcoming gaming smartphone. While we have no further information about the devices yet, it’s worth noting that the ROG Phone III recently passed the WiFi Alliance’s certification process with the model number I003DD.

Even though the certification doesn’t reveal any new information about the device, the fact that ASUS has already received certification for the device means that the company is well past the development process and might be launched soon. For the unaware, the ROG Phone III is a follow up to last year’s ROG Phone II which is known for disrupting the gaming smartphone segment with its flagship specifications and relatively affordable price tag. The ZenFone 7, on the other hand, follows the ZenFone 6 (or ASUS 6Z) from last year, which featured an innovative flip camera module.
