Discord for Android rolls out noise suppression powered by Krisp for some users

Since its debut back in 2015, Discord has evolved quite a bit and it’s now one of the most popular instant messengers for gamers and professionals alike. One of the main reasons behind Discord’s popularity is the sheer number of features it offers, both for text-based communication and VoIP calls. To provide users the best calling experience on the platform, Discord introduced a new noise suppression feature powered by Krisp for the desktop client earlier this year in April. The feature makes use of machine learning to remove background noise and, after using it for the last few weeks, I can attest that it’s actually quite fantastic. Which is why I’m excited to try it out on my phone, now that it’s rolling out to some users on the Discord app for Android.

The noise suppression feature is already available for some users on Discord for Android version 24-alpha 1. XDA Senior Member Some_Random_Username has the feature in his app and has shared the following screenshots. As you can see, the noise suppression feature appears as a new icon in the top right corner of the app when you’re in a channel. You can tap on the icon to enable noise suppression, which will instantly drown out any background noise. Alternatively, you can toggle noise suppression for all calls from within the app’s settings and you can also enable it from within the three-dot menu on any channel.

Our Editor-in-Chief, Mishaal Rahman, downloaded the latest Discord release on his Pixel 4 but he didn’t find the option to enable Krisp noise suppression. I also installed the APK on my Realme 6 Pro and got the same result. This leads us to believe that Discord is currently testing the feature with only a handful of users and it may roll out to more users in the following weeks. WhatsApp Beta v2.20.171 brings support for profile QR codes

WhatsApp for Android operates in two public branches: stable and beta. While the stable branch is where you want to be as the average user, the beta branch gives us the opportunity to witness the features that are in development for this popular instant messaging app. Past WhatsApp Betas have shown off hints for upcoming features such as multi-device support, expiring messages, Facebook story sharing, animated stickers, and even the famed dark theme. A previous beta had also spotted hints for QR code support for profiles, and now, the latest beta brings over support for the same.

As reported by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp for Android Beta v2.20.171 brings in support for QR codes for user profiles. This change is actually a server-side update, but you do need to be on this version to receive the feature. As one can expect, users get their own personal QR Code which they can share with other users, who can simply scan the code and add the phone number of the sharing user to their contact book. Since WhatsApp is tied to phone numbers, adding a contact number is enough to add a contact to your WhatsApp contact list.

To check out your personal QR code, you need to navigate to WhatsApp Settings and click on the QR code icon near your profile information. This opens up a new page within the app: on the first tab, you can view your own QR code, and on the second tab, you can scan QR codes from others. We also spot an image picker icon, indicating that you should also be able to scan a code from a pre-existing image in your gallery, for example, a screenshot. If needed, you can also revoke your QR code to prevent your number from being shared further.

As mentioned, this feature is currently available in the latest release within the beta branch of WhatsApp for Android. There is no word on when the feature will be making its way to the stable branch. While QR codes are definitely handy for quickly adding a contact, you can always just share your phone number — so you aren’t losing out all that much either way.

[Update 2: Android & Web Rollout] Twitter is starting to show quoted retweets on Android and iOS

Keeping track of conversations on Twitter can prove to be a nightmare, especially if you’re using your phone to access the social media platform. In order to make it easier for users to keep track of replies, the company has previously experimented with a couple of different features. Back in April last year, Twitter first tested new label tags to help users keep a track of the original author in a conversation and the people mentioned in the original tweet. Then, earlier this year in March, the company started rolling out threaded replies on Android which made browsing through replies a whole lot easier. And now, according to a recent tweet from prolific reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane), the platform is starting to show quoted retweets on Android and iOS.

For the unaware, Twitter currently lets you retweet both with and without a comment. However, regardless of what you do, the platform doesn’t have a way to let you see what comments people made alongside their retweet unless you click on the “Retweets” button and then check the profile for each person who retweeted the tweet. In order to simplify this process, Twitter is now testing a new UI that separates all retweets into two tabs — those with comments and those without comments.

As you can see in the tweet above, the tabs list down all the retweets based on whether or not they have a comment and the retweets that do have a comment show the comment alongside the original tweet.

Twitter is currently testing this feature with a handful of users on both Android and iOS, but the feature has a slightly different UI on each platform. As you can see in the tweet above, the Android version doesn’t have two separate tabs and only has a single button to show all retweets with comments. As of now, it isn’t clear which UI will be released when the feature finally rolls out to more users and we currently have no information on the release timeline. We’ll update the post as soon as the feature rolls out to a broader audience.


Update 1: Official on iOS

The ability to see all of your tweets that were quoted, or as Twitter calls it, “Retweets with comments,” is now available on iOS. When you tap “Retweets” on a tweet you are brought to a new page with two tabs for “With comments” and “Without comments.” According to a product lead at Twitter, the feature will be rolling out “soon” to Android.

Following the rollout on iOS, Twitter will now let you see the retweets with comments on both the official Android app as well as on the web.

Click on the number of retweets to see all the retweets that have happened with comments as well as those that have been retweeted without comments.

Amazfit Bip S with 40-day battery life launching in India on June 3

At the CES 2020 trade show earlier this year in January, Huami unveiled the Amazfit T-Rex smartwatch, Amazfit Bip S fitness tracker, Amazfit PowerBuds, and the Amazfit ZenBuds wireless. For the unaware, the Amazfit Bip S is a follow up to the Amazfit Bip, which was launched back in 2018, featuring new internals but without any noticeable changes in terms of design. The lightweight fitness tracker is now finally making its way to the Indian market, according to a recent press release shared by the company.

The Amazfit Bip S is an affordable fitness tracker that packs in a 1.28″ transflective color display with a 176 x176 resolution. It’s also worth noting that the Amazfit Bip S has a similar ODM design as the upcoming Realme Watch, leaked images of which recently surfaced online. Since the Realme Watch is making its way to India, it makes sense for Huami to launch the Amazfit Bip S in the country. The Amazfit Bip S will be available for purchase in India starting from June 3, but we currently have no word on the pricing. We expect the watch to be priced around the ₹5,000 mark, based on its international price of $69.90.

Sony’s upcoming WH-1000XM4 headphones may support DSEE Extreme, enable Ambient Sound when talking, and connect to multiple devices

In the vast sea of wireless Bluetooth headphones with active noise cancellation, there’s one product that has stood among the pack: the Sony WH-1000XM3. People really love these headphones (multiple XDA staffers have them), which means people are really interested in seeing how Sony will follow up on them. Information has started to pop up about the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphones, and today, an APK teardown is revealing even more features.

First, back in March, XDA’s Mishaal Rahman shared some live photos of the Sony WH-1000XM4. The design of the WH-1000XM4 headphones isn’t that exciting as it’s essentially identical to the Sony WH-1000XM3. The headphones were certified by Brazil’s Anatel, the country’s equivalent to the U.S. FCC. Mishaal also shared two pages of the device’s manual.

Fast forward to today and we’ve got even more goodies about the Sony WH-1000XM4 to share. Twitter user @justplayinghard posted some of his findings from a teardown of the Sony Headphones Connect APK. We also did our own teardown to corroborate these details. First up, there will be three colors: Black, Silver, and White. The Black and Silver colors can be seen below, but we did not include the render of the White model since the image in the APK was a placeholder one.

DSEE Extreme

Next up is DSEE Extreme. Based on the strings, it sounds like DSEE Extreme is DSEE HX with some unspecified AI enhancements. DSEE HX is an existing feature of Sony headphones (including the WH-1000XM3) that upscales sound sources to higher quality. Sony filed a trademark for DSEE Extreme last month and launched “DSEE Ultimate” with the Xperia 1 II. It’s likely that these two terms refer to the same technology, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Multi Point Connections

The next feature is something that people will really love. The Sony WH-1000XM4 may be able to connect to multiple devices at once to quickly switch between them, though that appears to be limited to two devices maximum. The Sony WH-1000XM3 can store multiple Bluetooth pairings, but you have to disconnect from one to connect to another. That would mean that the WH-1000XM4 headphones may be able to swap between paired devices much more quickly than the WH-1000XM3. Based on the strings, it sounds like all you have to do to swap audio output from one device to another is to simply play media from the currently inactive, but paired and connected, device. The one downside of this feature is that the high-quality LDAC Bluetooth audio codec can’t be used when multi-point is enabled.

Smart Talking/Speak-to-Chat

The last feature might be the most interesting and useful. “Smart Talking” may allow the Sony WH-1000XM4 to automatically enable ambient sound when voice is detected. So if you are trying to talk to someone, the headphones will automatically allow ambient noise to come through so you can communicate. After a user-defined time (Fast, Mid, Slow, or None), noise cancellation will return. Users will also be able to adjust the voice detection sensitivity from Auto (based on ambient sound), High, or Low in case users find that it activates too often (such as when the person speaking is close by) or too little (such as when you’re in a vehicle). You can toggle this setting either from within the app or from (likely) the NC/Ambient button on the headphones.

The Samsung Galaxy A71 5G is coming to Verizon likely with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765

Back in April, Samsung announced that they’re bringing the Galaxy A01, A11, A21, A51 5G, and A71 5G to the U.S. The Galaxy A71 5G and A51 5G are essentially the same as their LTE counterparts, the late 2019 Galaxy A71 and A51, but they pack upgraded processors and modems to support 5G connectivity. When Samsung announced the A51 5G and A71 5G for the U.S., they didn’t specify which carriers they would launch on, what price they would be available at, when they would go on sale, and what exact processors they’ll pack. In South Korea, both devices feature the Samsung Exynos 980 SoC, but Samsung devices sold in the U.S. usually don’t have Exynos processor. Now, thanks to information from multiple sources, we know a bit more about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A71 5G.

First and foremost, the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G has just been certified by the Bluetooth SIG. More interestingly is the fact that Samsung has submitted certification for a custom version of the device for Verizon.

Along with this, we examined a publicly accessible database that lists upcoming device models that will support Verizon’s online services. The database listed a device called “samsung_a71xq” coming to Verizon. The most interesting part of the code-name is the “a71xq.” A71 is, of course, the model number for the Galaxy A71. “x” means it’s a 5G device, in this case. Finally, the “q” means it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset.

We speculated that this chipset will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 or 765G because it’s the only upper mid-range Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with an integrated 5G modem. (There’s little to no chance these devices would have the much more expensive Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 just for 5G connectivity, especially since that chipset has an external modem which would have resulted in some shifting of the internal components of this device.) Indeed, Samsung’s FOTA testbed and a few Geekbench listings corroborate that the U.S. Galaxy A71 5G will have the Snapdragon 765 processor.

We’re well aware that Geekbench listings can be fabricated, but that’s why we’re only using it as corroboration. Plus, we can verify that the build number submitted along with the Geekbench listing is legitimate, something which is very hard to accurately fake. We can tell that these tests were run on a carrier model, non-Verizon, device. Samsung generally releases all models with the same base specifications, so it is expected that the U.S. Unlocked, U.S. Carrier, and Verizon models will all have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765. The main difference between the Verizon and unlocked/carrier models will likely be the addition of mmWave antennas in the former to support Verizon’s Ultrawide Band (mmWave) 5G network. This will likely increase the price, but it allows for connecting to Verizon’s ultra-fast 5G network (that few have access to).

Through this FOTA testbed, we were also able to get an approximate release date. The Samsung Galaxy A71 5G, both non-Verizon carrier and unlocked models, should be launching in late June to early July. I am personally very excited to use this device once it comes out. With potentially the same chipset and pricing as the upcoming Google Pixel 5, the Galaxy A71 5G may be a tough competitor.

Google releases Assistant-powered Action Blocks and new accessibility features in Maps, Live Transcribe, and Sound Amplifier

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day and Google is using the opportunity to announce several new accessibility-minded features. “Action Blocks” are finally ready for a public release, and new accessibility features are coming to Live Transcribe, Sound Amplifier, and Google Maps.

Action Blocks is a feature that Google introduced last year. In a nutshell, it’s an app that allows you to create buttons on the home screen to perform Google Assistant commands. The idea is these buttons are much easier for people with some form of cognitive disability use, rather than interacting with their voice or text.

While Action Blocks were designed as an accessibility tool, the functionality can be useful to anyone. You can create Google Assistant macros to automate things in your home and simply tap a widget instead of reciting a command. Blocks can be resized on the home screen and customized with images. Tapping a block will open Google Assistant and perform the command for you.

Next up is Live Transcribe, a tool that was introduced at Google I/O 2019. Live Transcribe automatically transcribes speech to text in multiple languages and it’s super handy. Now, Google is making it possible to add specific words that Google might not recognize, like names and things not found in the dictionary. Users can also search saved transcription by keywords.

The most interesting new feature for Live Transcribe, however, is the ability to be notified when someone nearby says your name. Users can set their name as a keyword and their phone will vibrate when it’s heard. This could be particularly useful for people who are deaf or hearing impaired. Live Transcribe now also includes Albanian, Burmese, Estonian, Macedonian, Mongolian, Punjabi, and Uzbek.

Speaking of sound, the Sound Amplifier tool (which was announced alongside Live Transcribe) now works with Bluetooth headphones. Sound Amplifier allows people to essentially increase the volume of their surroundings, and now that can be done over Bluetooth. Google Pixel devices can now boost the audio of media playing on the device as well.

Lastly, wheelchair access in Google Maps is getting more prominent placement for those that need it. The information has been available in Google Maps for a while, but it was buried inside the location details. Now, if that’s information that you need, you can select the “Accessible Places” option to have it shown right in the search results. Accessible Places is rolling out now in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
