The PushBullet and Join Chrome extensions are in danger of being removed due to vague privacy violations

In a bid to ensure that the Chrome Web Store doesn’t host any malicious Chrome extensions, Google routinely updates the platform’s privacy policies. Back in October 2018, the company announced one such update which was aimed at making extensions more secure. As part of the update, Google introduced new user controls for host permissions, made changes to the extensions review process, added new code readability requirements, and made 2-Step Verification necessary for Chrome Web Store developer accounts. While such changes are great for keeping malicious extensions off the platform, they now seem to be affecting legit Chrome extensions like Pushbullet and Join.

The developers behind Pushbullet and Join were recently alerted by Google that their extensions didn’t comply with the Chrome Web Store’s privacy policy and violated the “Use of Permissions” section. When the developers reached out to Google inquiring how their extensions violated the privacy policy, the company reverted back with a generic reply that states:

“Your product violates the “Use of Permission” section of the policy, which requires that you:

  • Request access to the narrowest permissions necessary to implement your product’s features or services.
  • If more than one permission could be used to implement a feature, you must request those with the least access to data or functionality.
  • Don’t attempt to “future proof” your product by requesting a permission that might benefit services or features that have not yet been implemented.”

In response to the aforementioned reply, Pushbullet’s developer reduced the extension’s permission requests and resubmitted the extension for review. However, the updated extension was rejected once again and the company gave the same reason as before. When asked for further clarification, Google didn’t respond to the developer’s email. The developer now plans to make a few other changes to the permission requests and submit the extension for review again. But that brings up another issue. Chrome Web Store’s privacy policy states that multiple resubmission “may also result in the suspension of related Google services associated with your Google account” as Google’s automated system might think that the developer is trying to find a way around the rules with multiple submissions.

Sadly though, the developer is left with no other option and has submitted another update with more changes to Pushbullet’s permissions requests. It’s also worth noting that even if the developer’s Google account isn’t suspended due to multiple submissions, they have less than 7 days to update the extension or it will be removed from the Chrome Web Store. When the developer shared this issue on Twitter, two Google developer advocates for Chrome developers had this to say:

Similarly, Join’s developer also reached out to Google for clarification but received the same generic response. What’s even worse is that when the developer tried to justify Join’s permission requests to the company, he received the same responses over and over again. Despite several attempts, Google didn’t explain what exactly needed to be changed in the extension and said that it couldn’t “provide any additional information regarding the issue.”

While both the Join and PushBullet Chrome extensions may very well violate Google’s User Data Privacy guidelines, it’s inarguable that the company could have done a better job of communicating exactly how both are in violation, so that the developers can easily fix the issue. At the time of writing, there were no further updates from the developers regarding the matter. We’ll update this post as and when we learn more about the situation.

Honor X10 5G with 90Hz display, Kirin 820, pop-up front camera launching in China on May 20

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor will soon be launching a new smartphone, Honor X10 5G, in its home country China. The company has been teasing the phone on its Chinese social media handles for a while now. Now ahead of the official launch, Honor has shared a render of the Honor X10 5G on Weibo that gives us our first official look at the phone. On top of that, the company has also detailed some key specifications of the Honor X10 5G that match the earlier leaks.

In the render, we can see the familiar square camera module on the back with a “Super Night Vision” branding. Up top, we can spot the pop-camera, the 3.5mm jack, and secondary microphone while the right side holds the side-mounted fingerprint scanner and volume keys.

As per Honor’s Weibo post, the Honor X10 5G will be powered by the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 820 SoC. 5G capability is also on board with support for 9 frequency bands. Moreover, the post confirms the phone will feature a 90Hz display with a 180Hz touch response rate.

Although Honor didn’t reveal much info about other specs such as display size, camera setup and battery, there are a few rumors floating around. As per Ishan Agarwal, the Honor X10 5G will feature a 6.63-inch LCD panel and a quad-camera setup similar to the Mate 30 series — consisting of a 40MP Sony IMX600y sensor with an RYYB filter, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 2MP macro lens, and a depth sensor. Rumors also suggest the phone will pack a 4,300 mAh battery with 22.5W fast charging support, Bluetooth 5.1 support, IP5X rating, 6GB RAM and 128GB storage, and will come running Honor’s custom skin MagicUI 3.1.1 out-of-the-box. Since the phone is currently being teased for the Chinese market, Google Apps are out of the equation.

Honor X10 5G

There’s also said to be a Pro model, Honor X10 5G Pro, that will have an 8MP telephoto camera, OIS on primary and telephoto cameras, and support for 20W wireless charging while keeping everything the same as the standard variant.

The Honor X10 5G is set to be launched on May 20 at an event in China. Details regarding pricing and international availability aren’t known yet but we expect to learn more on that at the official launch.

The OnePlus 8 Pro’s Color Filter camera can see through some plastic objects

OnePlus’ latest flagship, the OnePlus 8 Pro, is inarguably the company’s best smartphone yet. Unlike its predecessors, the OnePlus 8 Pro (review) is a full-fledged flagship device that packs in all of the features that the company skimped out on in previous generations. These include things like support for fast wireless charging, an IP rating for dust/water resistance, and a flagship-grade camera setup. Speaking of which, the OnePlus 8 Pro packs in a quad-camera setup like most other premium flagships out there. However, OnePlus’ choice of camera sensors doesn’t fall in line with the current trend in the premium flagship space. Instead of using a 108MP Samsung ISOCELL sensor or a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, the OnePlus 8 Pro packs in a 48MP Sony IMX689 primary sensor. The primary camera is accompanied by a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, an 8MP telephoto camera, and a new 5MP Color Filter camera; the likes of which we haven’t seen in any other smartphone out there.

OnePlus claims that the Color Filter camera is used for camera filters that can be applied to the final shot but that can also be achieved even without the Color Filter camera. This means that the sensor can only be used for infrared photography, using the new Photochrom mode on the OnePlus 8 Pro. However, as it turns out, there’s another use case for the new Color Filter camera. According to a recent post from XDA Senior Member combat goofwing on our forums, the sensor can be used to see through some plastic objects.

OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter X-Ray 14 OnePlus 8 Pro Color Filter X-Ray 14

As you can see in the images above, clicking pictures of some plastic objects using the Color Filter camera in the Photochrom mode reveals their internal circuitry. While we aren’t completely sure of the reason behind this behavior, it seems that the Color Filter camera is not filtering IR light as there is no IR cutoff filter which, in turn, allows you to see through the plastic. As demonstrated in a video shared on the original thread, the ‘feature’ works even in the viewfinder and you can clearly see the internal circuitry of a TV remote. Max Weinbach from our team was able to test the feature on his OnePlus 8 Pro and it seems to work on a vast variety of objects, ranging from security cameras to VR headsets (gallery). And no, this can’t be used to see through clothes. Don’t try it, perverts.

Samsung’s budget Galaxy A21s leaks with quad rear cameras, hole-punch display, and the new Exynos 850

Last month Samsung announced the budget-friendly Galaxy A21 in the US market alongside four new Galaxy A‌ series of smartphones. Although the device has yet to officially go on sale in the US, it turns out Samsung is already working on a new variant. According to WinFuture, Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy A21s, an upgraded version of the Galaxy A21.

The Samsung Galaxy A21s will bring some much-needed upgrades in the areas of camera, SoC, and battery. WinFuture has also managed to obtain the renders of the Galaxy A21s which gives us a detailed look at the overall design of this upcoming budget smartphone. As you can see in the images attached below, the front of this device looks exactly the same as the A21, packing a hole-punch display and a spacious bottom chin. The resemblance starts to fade when we move to the back though. Where the Galaxy A21 arranged cameras in a vertical strip, the upcoming phone opts for the L-shaped camera setup that has become a norm on Samsung phones as of late.

Samsung Galaxy A21s Samsung Galaxy A21s Samsung Galaxy A21s Samsung Galaxy A21s Samsung Galaxy A21s

In terms of specifications, the Galaxy A21s is expected to feature a 6.5-inch PLS TFT HD+ display with a resolution of 1600 x 720. On the inside, the phone will be powered by an unreleased Exynos 850 octa-core chipset.

Coming to the cameras, the quad-camera setup will have a 48MP f/2.0 primary camera — a step up from 16MP of Galaxy A21 — an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, 2MP macro lens, and 2MP depth sensor. It will continue to use the same 13MP front camera, but thanks to the new chipset, it will allow shooting 1080p videos, the report notes.

The phone will pack a hefty 5,000 mAh battery, compared to the 4,000 mAh unit on the predecessor, that will charge via a USB-C‌ port. Moreover, the device is expected to feature a headphone jack, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0. Finally, the phone will run Android 10 based on an unspecified version of One UI.

As for pricing and availability, the Galaxy A21s will be offered in black, white, and blue and is expected to go on sale by the end of May at a probable price of around 199 or 209. Details regarding the international availability remain unknown as of now.

Huawei can’t launch new Android smartphones with Google apps before May 2021 as Trump extends trade ban

The last few smartphones launched by Huawei and its sub-brand Honor don’t come with Google Mobile Services (GMS) or the Google Play Store. Instead, they feature Huawei’s own alternatives to these services, namely Huawei Mobile Services Core (HMS Core) and Huawei AppGallery. This is due to the fact that on May 15th, 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 13873, declaring a “national emergency” under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, in order to limit the ability of U.S. companies to do business with entities deemed to be national security threats, including Huawei and its subsidiaries. The executive order was scheduled to lapse this month, however, a recent report from Reuters reveals that it has now been extended for another year.

The report states that on May 13th, 2020, Trump re-signed the executive order, continuing its effectiveness for 1 year, until May 15th, 2021. In an official statement released on the White House website, President Donald Trump was quoted saying, “For this reason, the national emergency declared on May 15, 2019, must continue in effect beyond May 15, 2020. Therefore, in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for 1 year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13873 with respect to securing the information and communications technology and services supply chain.”

When the original executive order went into effect, Huawei and its many subsidiaries were added to the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List. This barred Google from signing new MADAs (Mobile Application Distribution Agreements) with Huawei to distribute GMS (Google Mobile Services) on new Huawei and Honor devices released after May 15th, 2019.

The full scope of this ban never went into effect, though, as the U.S. granted Huawei a Temporary General License (TGL) to do limited business with U.S. companies (and this TGL was extended several times over the last year). Thanks to this TGL, Huawei can continue to ship GMS on its existing Huawei and Honor branded smartphones. Reuters points out that this TGL will be extended yet again, stating that “The U.S. Commerce Department is also expected to extend again a license, set to expire on Friday, allowing U.S. companies to keep doing business with Huawei, a person briefed on the matter said.”

As mentioned earlier, due to the original trade ban Huawei has been developing alternatives to Google Mobile Services and Google Play Store — HMS Core and AppGallery. The company has released new devices without GMS — the Huawei Mate 30 series, Huawei P40 series, and the Honor 30 series just to name a few — and is continuing to design new SoCs based on their existing license agreements with ARM — Kirin 990, Kirin 810, and Kirin 820. Lastly, Huawei has also been able to partially sidestep the U.S. trade ban by re-releasing devices into the market that maintain software compatibility with already certified devices.

Indian Pricing

India is currently in the middle of a lockdown because of COVID-19, because of which, many OEMs have had to shelve their plans. Nonetheless, the company is going ahead with a price reveal.

OnePlus 8 OnePlus 8 Pro OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z

The OnePlus 8 series will be available in the following RAM and storage variants at the below-mentioned prices:

  • OnePlus 8:
    • 6GB + 128GB: ₹41,999 (Amazon.in exclusive) (Glacial Green)
    • 8GB + 128GB: ₹44,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green)
    • 12GB + 256GB: ₹49,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green, Interstellar Glow)
  • OnePlus 8 Pro:
    • 8GB + 128GB: ₹54,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green)
    • 12GB + 256GB: ₹59,999 (Onyx Black, Glacial Green, Ultramarine Blue)
  • OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z: ₹1,999 (Black, Blue, Mint, Oat)

XDA Review: OnePlus 8 || OnePlus 8 Pro

Interestingly, India gets a lower RAM variant and an even lower starting price point ($549). Even the matching variants are priced lower in India. For instance, the starting 8GB + 128GB variant of the OnePlus 8 costs ~$588, which is a good ~$100 cheaper than the US pricing of $699. Similarly, the OnePlus 8 Pro’s 12GB + 256GB variant costs ~$785, which is a far cry from the $999 price tag for the top variant. Even the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z is half the price. Keep in mind that the Indian variant lacks some 5G bands, which is a non-issue for India because the country does not have 5G anyway.

The phones and accessories will be available across all online and offline channels when the sale is made possible in India in line with the government’s COVID-19 advisories.
