Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus receive official Android 10 update

During Mobile World Congress in 2019, Sony unveiled the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus, two mid-range smartphones with tall 21:9 displays. The phones launched with Android 9 Pie on board, but Sony promised an update to Android 10 “early 2020 onwards”. Sony quickly added both devices to the company’s Open Devices Program, and the device duo got official TWRP and LineageOS 17.1 support earlier this year. Now, it appears that Sony is officially rolling out the Android 10 update for the Xperia 10 and 10 Plus.

According to users on Russian forum 4PDA, Sony is pushing the stable Android 10 update to Xperia 10 and 10 Plus users. The software version is 53.1.A.2.2 (bumped from 53.0.A.14.47) with the March 2020 Android Security Patch Level and is available for both the single SIM (10: I3113 / 10 Plus: I3213) and dual SIM (10: I4113 / 10 Plus: I4213) models in Russia and other European countries.

Sony hasn’t published a proper changelog for this update as of yet, but the new build should introduce all the new features to the Xperia 10 series that Google rolled out with Android 10, including a system-wide dark mode, gesture navigation, smart replies, and more. The update is being rolled out in a staggered fashion in order to ensure a smooth rollout, but the full firmware package can also downloaded using the XperiFirm tool by XDA Senior Member IgorEisberg. Power users can then opt for either Flashtool (GUI) or Newflasher (CUI) to perform a manual flashing, though we would still advise caution.

Both Xperia 10 devices feature 64GB of internal storage, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, headphone jack, SD card slot, USB-C, and NFC. The primary difference between the two is in terms of processing power. While the Xperia 10 Plus is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 platform, the other one is powered by a slightly less-powerful Snapdragon 630 SoC. The regular model also features a depth sensor, which is substituted by an 8MP telephoto shooter on the Plus variant.

Microsoft launches Bing Wallpapers to bring beautiful images daily to your Android device

While Windows Mobile may have lost the race to Android, Microsoft is far from giving up on the mobile platform. Over the last couple of years, the company has released a number of successful apps, both on Android and iOS, that address several shortcomings on both the platforms. Some of these apps, including ones from Microsoft’s Office suite, SMS Organizer, and Microsoft Launcher, have reached immense popularity and have amassed several million users around the world. The company keeps adding new apps to its portfolio ever so often and, just a couple of months ago, it released the Microsoft Math Solver app on Android, which harnesses the power of AI to solve basic and complex math problems. Adding on to its ever-growing list of useful apps, the company is now rolling out the Bing Wallpapers app on the Google Play Store.

If you’ve ever used Microsoft’s Bing search engine before, you’d know that it displays a great selection of curated wallpapers on the homepage each day. This feature is quite popular among users who swear by the search engine, so much so that the Play Store already has several third-party wallpaper apps that are dedicated to pulling images from Bing’s homepage. As per a recent report from Android Police, Microsoft has now decided to capitalize on the demand for Bing’s homepage wallpapers and has started rolling out the Bing Wallpapers app on the Play Store.

As you’d expect, the Bing Wallpapers app sources a set of wallpapers from the search engine, which is usually a collection of well-photographed landscapes from around the world. The app updates daily with a new set of wallpapers that you can choose to set as your wallpaper. In case you don’t wish to manually select a new wallpaper every day, the app gives you the option to automatically update your device’s wallpaper with the featured image of the day. You also get the option to set an update frequency and to choose whether the app can use mobile data to source the wallpapers for the day. On top of that, the app displays a gallery of previously featured images that can be filtered by category, primary color, and country of origin. Tapping on any image brings up some information about the photo, along with buttons for sharing the photo, setting it as your current wallpaper, and looking up related images from Bing.

The Bing Wallpapers app is completely free to use and doesn’t include any ads or in-app purchases. If you’re interested in trying out the app on your device, you can either download it from the Play Store link below or you can pick up the latest release from APK Mirror.

OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro kernel source code is now available

After months of leaks and rumors, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro were officially announced last month. The devices are now on sale in several countries and they even received their first set of software updates last week which addressed some early bugs and improved the front camera performance. Now in a bid to comply with the requirements of GPL v2 and help the custom development community get the ball rolling on building ROMs and kernels, OnePlus has released the kernel sources for the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

OnePlus has historically provided Day 1 kernel source code release for OnePlus phones but they’re admittedly a little late this time around. The kernel source code for the OnePlus 8 (code-name “instantnoodle”) and OnePlus 8 Pro (code-name “instantnoodlep”) have been uploaded to OnePlus’s GitHub repository and interested users can download/review the code by following the link below.

Like all Android devices, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro run on a modified Linux kernel. Google takes a mainline Linux kernel release and then modifies it to support the latest Android release – they call this the “Android Common Kernel.” Chipset makers then take the Android Common Kernel and modify it further to make an SoC-specific kernel. OEMs/ODMs (like OnePlus) then take the SoC-specific kernel and make further changes to support their hardware or extra vendor components – we call this a device-specific kernel. Because the Linux kernel is distributed under the GNU GPL v2 license, all entities that distribute forks of the kernel (which includes Linux kernel BLOBs shipping on commercial devices) are required to provide the source code for their kernel upon request. This is the reason why OEMs have to release kernel source, and hence why OnePlus has released the device-specific kernel for the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro today.

PUBG Mobile 0.18.0 adds sandstorm weather effects to Miramar, Cheer Park, and a bunch of other changes

PUBG Mobile kicked off Season 12 for the game with a major update earlier this year in March. The update (v0.17.0) marked the return of the Hardcore Mode, along with new features and improvements to the Classic Mode. Now, the game is receiving yet another massive update which packs in some more noteworthy changes. According to the patch notes published on the official website, the latest update (v0.18.0) brings new sandstorm weather effects to the Miramar desert map, adds a 2.7x scope to the Win94 rifle, adds the Canted Sight attachment to the game, and kicks off Royale Pass Season 13, among other things.

The latest update for PUBG Mobile has already started rolling out to users via the Play Store and users who update the game before May 13th stand the chance to win 1 Radio, 2,888 BP, and 3 Lieutenant Parsec Backpacks. Here are the complete patch notes for the latest update:

Xiaomi Mi 10 5G with a 108MP camera, Snapdragon 865, and ad-free MIUI launched in India

Xiaomi has traditionally been associated with smartphones that offer the best bang for the buck. While Xiaomi has a massive portfolio of products – from smartphones to dumb feature phones, laptops, smart TVs, IoT products, and even STEM toys. Each of these products is priced as economically possible and this has lent Xiaomi and brands under or backed by it (like Redmi and POCO) a persona of affordability. However, the company has also been producing flagship products, which lie between true flagships and flagship killers. To mark its 10th anniversary, Xiaomi introduced the Mi 10 and the Mi 10 Pro earlier this year in China, followed by its launch in the European markets. Today, Xiaomi is bringing the Mi 10 5G – but without the Pro – to India after several years of focus on the mid-range in the country.

Xiaomi is designed for a premium experience with its glass sandwich design, a 4D curved Super AMOLED display, 108MP quad cameras, Snapdragon 865 mobile platform, stereo speakers, and a lot more. For gaming and unhindered performance, Xiaomi has included a multi-layered vapor cooling chamber.

To complement the super-charged hardware, Xiaomi has also made subtle changes to the software experience owing the flagship nature of the device. This includes a clean user experience without ads and any bloatware. Besides this, Google apps such as the Dailer, Messages, and Contacts app will replace Xiaomi’s own apps to ensure a top-tier Android experience on the phone.

In terms of cameras, the Xiaomi Mi 10 features a Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor with a resolution of 108MP. This is a 1/1.33″ sensor, much larger than the 48MP and 64MP sensors that have been trending recently. Along with the sensor, the phone features a 7P lens setup and 4-axis OIS. Additionally, there’s a 13MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP portrait camera with auto-focus, and a 2MP depth sensor as part of the rear camera. The hole-punch in the display accommodates a 20MP camera. In terms of videos, the Mi 10 can capture 8K video at up to 30fps and 4K video at up to 60fps.

The Mi 10 gets a 4,780mAh battery and supports 30W fast charging both – wired and wirelessly. You’ll need Xiaomi’s proprietary chargers to attain those charging speeds, and the wireless charger must be bought separately. The phone is also Qi-certified and can charger at up to 10W using the compliant charger.

Xiaomi launches Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 and Android TV-powered Mi Box 4K in India

Xiaomi has shaken the smartphone and smart TV market in India and is now working towards grabbing a significant chunk of other segments. Along with the Xiaomi Mi 10 5G, Xiaomi has now announced two new products in India – the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 TWS and the Mi Box 4K, which is a rebranded version of the Mi Box S.

Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 TWS

The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 truly wireless earphones feature a 14.2mm drivers. Xiaomi India has specially optimized the sound for the Indian audience, tuning it for Bollywood and other bass-heavy music. Each of these earphones feature two microphones, one of which is specifically working to minimize background noise during calls.

Like the Apple AirPods and the Realme Buds Air (review), the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 feature proximity sensors that allow automatic pausing when you take either of the earphones out of your ears. The earphones come in a rigid design without any sort of cushioning or earbuds. Xiaomi says that they have optimized the shape of the earphone by mapping millions of ears in simulation software. Each of the earbuds weighs just about 4g while both of them with the case weigh 50g in total.

In terms of battery life, the Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 can last up to 4 hours while the case can add an additional 10 hours of battery life. There’s no wireless charging and the case can be charged using a USB-C port at the bottom.

Mi Box 4K

The Mi Box 4K is an Android streaming device running on Android TV Pie and can convert any dumb TV into a smart TV. The streamer box appears to be a rebranded Mi Box S, which has been available in the market for about a couple of years. Unlike Xiaomi’s own Mi TV lineup, the Mi Box 4K does not run on Patchwall and comes with the standard Android TV UI.

As is in the name of the device, it supports up to 4K video transmission over HDMI. It is certified for HDR10 and can play supported content if your TV also supports that. For improved audio, the TV box also supports Dolby Audio format.

In terms of I/O, the Mi Box 4K features an HDMI 2.0b port, a 3.5mm jack for audio output, and Bluetooth 4.1 for audio transmission. It supports dual-band Wi-Fi and features a USB 2.0 port so you also play your offline files.

It is powered by a quad-core Amlogic S905X processor and comes with 8GB of internal storage.

The Mi Box 4K comes with a remote controller that has Netflix and Prime Video hotkeys. Additionally, it comes with an in-line microphone for interaction with the Google Assistant.

Price & Availability

The Mi True Wireless Earphones 2 will be available in India starting May 12th for an introductory price of ₹3,999 via Amazon India, Mi Homes, and Mi.com. After May 17th, the price of the earphones will be ₹4,499.

The Mi Box 4K will be available in India from May 11th at a price of ₹3,499 on Flipkart, Mi.com, and Mi Home stores.

Do note that the delivery might be delayed due to the COVID-19 lockdown in India.

Xiaomi teases the Redmi K30 5G “Speed Edition” with the unannounced Snapdragon 768G

Back in December last year, Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi launched the Redmi K30 5G in China. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, the Redmi K30 was the company’s first 5G-enabled smartphone and it packed in a couple of other noteworthy features, like a 64MP Sony IMX686 primary camera, a 120Hz high refresh rate display, 30W fast charging support, and more. The device was launched alongside the Redmi K30 4G, which packed in the Snapdragon 730G chipset instead, and was soon followed by the Redmi K30 Pro featuring Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 865 chip. Now, as per recent posts on Chinese social media platform Weibo, Xiaomi is prepping up to launch another smartphone as part of the Redmi K30 series.

As reported by GizmoChina, Xiaomi’s official Redmi Weibo account has started teasing a new version of the Redmi K30 5G called the “Redmi K30 5G Speed Edition”. The device is expected to launch at 2 PM China Standard Time on May 11th in partnership with Chinese etailer JD.com and a listing of the device has already appeared on the etailer’s website. As spotted by XDA Senior Member TingyiChen, when you view this listing in JD’s official mobile app (and not the online listing on a web browser), you’ll see the processor listed as the “Snapdragon 768G.” This is listed in two places — in the title of the listing and in the detailed specifications.

Assuming that this isn’t a typo, then Xiaomi may have just leaked the name of an unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. If the Snapdragon 768G does exist, then it will most likely be a follow-up to the Snapdragon 765G with minor performance improvements. As mentioned earlier, the standard Redmi K30 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 765G and since Xiaomi is teasing performance upgrades with the Redmi K30 5G Speed Edition, it would make sense for this unreleased phone to be powered by a better processor. The only other already-released Snapdragon processor that’s better than the Snapdragon 765G is the Snapdragon 865. But since that’s already found on the Redmi K30 Pro, a new mid-range processor does seem quite plausible.

It’s also worth noting that the Redmi K30 5G Speed Edition isn’t the only upcoming smartphone in the Redmi K30 series. Earlier this month, we found evidence that suggests that Xiaomi is also working on a cheaper variant of the Redmi K30 called the Redmi K30i.
