Samsung Galaxy M11 launches with Infinity-O display, 5000mAh battery

Samsung introduced a new affordable Galaxy M series to its portfolio last year to take on brands like Xiaomi in the online market. The new lineup kicked off with the launch of the Galaxy M10 and the Galaxy M20, which were essentially upgrades for the company’s Galaxy J series. Since then, the company has launched several great smartphones in the Galaxy M series, including the Galaxy M30, Galaxy M40, Galaxy M10s, Galaxy M30s, Galaxy M31 and, most recently, the Galaxy M21. Earlier this month, we saw leaked renders of another upcoming smartphone in the series — the Galaxy M11 — and the company has now officially unveiled the device.

Galaxy M11 camera module

As per a report from GSMArena, the Samsung Galaxy M11 recently appeared on the Samsung UAE website with a design identical to the one we saw in previous leaks. The device features a 6.4-inch HD+ LCD with a hole punch cutout in the top left corner for the selfie camera. While the company hasn’t revealed the exact chipset powering the Galaxy M11, the listing reveals that it packs in an octa-core CPU clocked at 1.8GHz. The unnamed SoC is coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, along with a dedicated microSD card slot for expansion.

The Galaxy M11 features a triple camera setup on the back, featuring a 12MP f/1.8 primary shooter, a 5MP f/2.2 ultrawide camera, and a 2MP depth sensor for portrait shots. Alongside the vertically aligned camera module on the back, the device has a dual-LED flash and a capacitive fingerprint sensor. Powering the device is a massive 5,000mAh battery which can be charged using the USB Type-C port, a welcome addition on the budget smartphone. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.2, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and WiFi b/g/n at 2.4GHz. The listing showcases three color variants — black, blue, and purple — but there’s still no information on its pricing and availability. As of now, Samsung has also released no information regarding its plans to launch the device outside the UAE.

Samsung says they are still working on the Galaxy Watch Active 2’s ECG support

Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch Active 2 alongside the Galaxy Note 10 series in August of 2019. It is a fitness-focused smartwatch powered by Tizen and packing all of the features you might expect from a Samsung smartwatch by now. The device was announced over 6 months ago and has been available for purchase throughout that time. And one of the headlining features of the new smartwatch is its ECG sensor, but support for it has been notably absent since it was first released.

ECG, or electrocardiogram, is a tool that tracks the electrical activity of your heartbeat. Physicians can analyze the ECG output to determine if there are any abnormalities in the heartbeat pattern or rate, such as atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, etc. The ability of a smartwatch to record your heart’s electrical activity could be a lifesaver within this context. However, because implementing this technology delves into the realm of medical devices, the U.S. FDA (and equivalent regulatory agencies in other countries) must approve the use of the sensor in the device. The only other smartwatch manufacturer to bundle this feature on their device is Apple with its Apple Watch devices. Samsung has yet to receive FDA approval for the ECG in the Galaxy Watch Active 2, whereas the Apple Watch’s ECG has been approved a long while ago. It has been over 7 months since the Galaxy Watch Active 2 was released, and we’ve now heard word that Samsung is still working on this feature (via TizenHelp).

This is both good news and bad news as it confirms that Samsung still plans on adding the feature, but they’re letting people down who may have bought the smartwatch expecting a quick turnaround on it getting FDA approval for the ECG feature. The good part, however, is that once it receives FDA approval, then it will probably roll out to all existing devices as an OTA update to the watch’s Tizen firmware. We hope that this feature rolls out to Galaxy Watch Active 2 users soon.

OnePlus 8 Lite could launch under the OnePlus Z branding later this year

OnePlus is now a premium smartphone brand, leaning into the category of luxury products such as the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition or the Concept One. But almost everyone who has enamored the brand knows that it started very humbly. It focussed its energy on flagship-grade devices sans the flagship pricing. However, every new series was accompanied by an increase in prices and that has left a vacuum for a powerful mid-ranger in the segment. After not having launched any other mid-ranger in over four years since the OnePlus X, the company may now be mulling a comeback in the sub-flagship segment with the alleged OnePlus 8 Lite branded as the OnePlus Z, a leak suggests.

Last week, XDA’s own Max Weinbach tweeted about the likeliness of OnePlus reintroducing X series. A couple of days later, Max’s sources confirmed that this smartphone’s appearance lines up with the purported OnePlus 8 Lite’s hardware.

The suggested OnePlus 8 Lite is the company’s first non-flagship device since the OnePlus X. Although the OnePlus 8 and the OnePlus 8 Pro could launch next month, a report earlier this month suggested the OnePlus 8 Lite could be launched several months later. Leaker Ishan Agarwal also asserted the same, and given their confidence, we can expect the information about the OnePlus Z to carry much weight.

After letting flagship killers OnePlus One and the OnePlus 2 make its mark in the industry, the company launched a slightly more affordable and a tad bit less powerful OnePlus X in 2015. The OnePlus X seemed like a mid-ranger instead of an intended competitor to the flagships of the time; it was some sort of a cross-over (yeah, hence the “X”) between premium and mid-range suites (which had a much clearer distinction back in the day). Aamir concluded his OnePlus X review underscoring that while it had the premium looks of much more expensive phones like the iPhone 5/5s, it lacked the same vigor as the other OnePlus devices of the era.

A couple of years ago, OnePlus also admitted that OnePlus X was a cocky effort at breaking into the mid-range, especially since brands like Xiaomi were thriving in the segment. Unfortunately for the former, though, the OnePlus X did not align with the consumers’ expectations from the brand. So, half a year after its launch, the company shelved the production of the OnePlus X to focus on a true flagship.

OnePlus 8 Lite/Z leaked render

More than four years down the line, the market has many more choices and price brackets, and the average price of OnePlus phones is much higher. Not just that, OnePlus has evolved from a brand for prosumers and developers to one that resonates with the majority of prolific phone users. Hence, a phone that belies the “true flagship” hallmark but continues to offer a great experience for the price is likely to be much more welcomed.

We’re still waiting for more details on the supposed OnePlus Z or 8 Lite and will be adding them as we learn. What do you think about OnePlus seeking the mid-range market again? Let us know in the comments below!

Possible Xiaomi Mi Note 10 “Lite” gets certified by the FCC with Snapdragon 730G and penta-cameras

Back in November, Xiaomi surprised everyone by bringing back the Mi Note lineup, which had not seen a new entry since the Xiaomi Mi Note 3 in 2017. These new devices were the Mi Note 10 and its Pro variant. Both pack a Snapdragon 730G processor, and the other specs are expectedly mid-range for an Android smartphone until you go to the camera side: it was the first phone to release with a 108MP sensor, and the rest of the penta-camera array was also pretty impressive. Max Weinbach went hands-on with it, and he found it to provide pretty great camera versatility. Now, it seems that a cheaper version of this phone may come to the market very soon.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 XDA Forum

The Mi Note 10 Dual SIM, 6GB RAM/128GB storage model has the model name “M1910F4G.” And recently, Xiaomi submitted a new document to the FCC to update the phone’s certification. This new document is titled “Product Equality Declaration-F4L&F4” and it lists the difference between M1910F4G (the Mi Note 10) and a phone with the model number M2002F4LG (which could possibly be this purported “Lite” model).

The document reveals the following differences between the Mi Note 10 and the new M2002F4LG:

  • Screen: same (6.47″ FHD+ curved OLED, 19:9, waterdrop notch)
  • Rear cameras: 64MP + 8MP + 8MP + 5MP + 2MP
  • Laser focus: no laser auto-focus
  • Battery capacity: same (5260mAh)
  • Network: LTE band 41 supported
  • CPU: same (Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G)
  • Software: Android 10 with MIUI 11
  • Charging: same (30W charging)

Mi Note 10 Lite vs Mi Note 10

The main takeaways from this list is that the 108MP sensor is being swapped for a more conventional 64MP sensor. The full penta-camera array of the standard model is 108MP + 20MP + 12MP + 8MP + 2MP. The Note 10 Lite might be able to provide similar versatility than the standard Mi Note 10 provides, with the sole difference of having lower-res sensors— which is still pretty good as the only phones to use 108MP sensors so far besides the Mi Note 10 are the Mi MIX Alpha, the Mi 10 lineup and the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. We also don’t have laser auto-focus.

Other than these, the phone seems to be identical: Snapdragon 730G processor, 30W charging, and the same display. Unlike the standard model, this one would come with Android 10 out of the box, and the software would come with support for LTE band 41. The camera difference alone may bring down the price quite considerably, given how the phone was fairly expensive precisely because of the 108MP camera. We don’t know yet when this device will launch or if it will launch, but it is definitely worth a look once it is out.

Realme X2, X2 Pro are getting the Android 10 stable update with Realme UI

The Realme X2 and Realme X2 Pro were launched globally some time ago. The Realme X2 (review) had fiery midrange specs with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G, a 64MP quad-camera and up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The X2 Pro (review), on the other hand, served the flagship space by bumping up the specs with a Snapdragon 855+ and up to 12 GB of RAM. Both phones served as Realme’s hottest devices for the last quarter of 2019, and now we have some good news for owners of both of these phones: an Android 10 update is coming your way after the conclusion of the opt-in beta.

Both the phones launched in the market with Android 9 Pie out of the box and OPPO’s ColorOS 6.1 on top. The fact that Realme phones run ColorOS has long been a source of confusion as most people dismiss Realme as an OPPO sub-brand because of this: while it started as one, Realme branched out of OPPO in 2018. As such, Realme is now rolling out Realme UI to its device lineup, and the latest devices to receive Realme UI based on Android 10 are the Realme X2 and the Realme X2 Pro.

Realme UI in its current state is still very similar to OPPO’s new ColorOS 7 interface, albeit some visual differences still exist. Subsequent updates will probably distance it even further from ColorOS, however. The update to Android 10 also comes with all of the improvements that the latest version of Android includes, as well as all of the newest ColorOS 7/Realme UI interface and functionality improvements.

The update for both devices has now been announced in Realme’s forums (Realme X2, Realme X2 Pro), and is now rolling out over-the-air, at least for the Indian market. As such, it should roll out to your device in the following hours or days. Users are also discussing both updates in our forums, so if you can’t get it to show up, then go ahead and take a look at the advice there.

OPPO is preparing to launch the Reno Ace 2 with the Snapdragon 865 and quad cameras

The OPPO Reno lineup has received significant shake-ups since its initial release in early 2019. The first devices in this lineup, the OPPO Reno and the Reno 10x Zoom, featured unique, iconic designs with a flush rear camera and a crazy pop-up swivel module which both hosted the rear flash module and the front-facing camera. This, therefore, eliminated the need for having a notch. This unique design was kept through their successors, the Reno2 lineup, but it was discontinued with the Reno3 in favor of a more conventional-looking hole-punch display. We also saw it branch out with a higher-end offshoot, the OPPO Reno Ace. The OPPO Reno Ace was OPPO’s first phone with a high refresh rate display (90Hz) and 65W SuperVOOC 2.0. Now, we’re getting a successor in the form of the OPPO Reno Ace 2.

A few days ago, OPPO VP Brian Shen took to his personal Weibo account to confirm that the company was indeed working on the OPPO Reno Ace 2. Now, a TENAA listing reveals the phone has a single, left-sided hole-punch design and 5G support. A separate listing reveals most of the specifications of the device.

The OPPO Reno Ace 2 as per TENAA

As for the physical external design, it features a circle rear camera mount similar to the one we’ve seen in devices like the OnePlus 7T and Redmi K30 Pro, while there is a notably chunky front-facing hole-punch camera. Standard Reno3 devices already have a hole-punch camera as well, as we’ve mentioned previously, but this one seems to be particularly big, at least when looking at it from TENAA pics.

The phone will feature a 2.8 GHz processor, likely the Snapdragon 865 (although processor name is not mentioned directly on TENAA) given the high-end nature of its predecessor, and will come in both 8 GB RAM and 12 GB RAM options. It will feature a 2400×1080, 20:9 AMOLED panel which measures at 6.5-inches diagonally. On the camera side, it will be sporting a 48MP main sensor with additional 8MP + 2MP + 2MP sensors (it is not clear which sensors play which function), while the front-facing camera features a 16MP resolution. It also lists a 1955mAh battery, although it is most probably not the full capacity as OPPO uses a dual-cell battery design in order to support high current fast charging with SuperVOOC.

Specifications:

  • Display: 6.5-inch 2400×1080, AMOLED
  • SoC: Octa-core CPU @ 2.8GHz, likely Qualcomm Snapdragon 865
  • RAM: 8GB/12GB
  • Storage: 128GB/256GB
  • Software: Android 10 (likely with ColorOS 7.1)
  • Rear Cameras: 48MP + 8MP + 2MP + 2MP
  • Front Camera: 16MP
  • Dimensions & weight: 160.0 x 75.4 x 8.6mm, 185g
  • Colors: Black, blue, purple
  • Connectivity
    • GSM: 900MHz, 1800MHz
    • CDMA: 800MHz
    • TDSCDMA: 2GHz
    • WCDMA: I, VIII
    • TDLTE: Band 38, Band 39, Band 40, Band 41 (2575-2635 MHZ)
    • LTEFDD: Band 1, Band 3, Band 5, Band 8
    • NSA: Band 41, Band 78, Band 79
    • SA: Band 41, Band 78, Band 79

The OPPO Reno Ace never launched outside of China, though, so it’s unlikely the Reno Ace 2 will. Just like its predecessor, it’s possible the Reno Ace 2 could also have some “firsts” for OPPO, such as OPPO’s 30W Wireless VOOC Flash charging. We’ll have to wait for more details to emerge.

Realme brings the March 2020 security update to the Realme X, XT, 5 Pro, 5i, and C2

Realme, as a smartphone manufacturer, has been putting a surprisingly decent amount of focus on Android updates despite the fact that their phones run a fairly heavy OEM UX skin (first ColorOS, now Realme UI).
