HMD Global unveils HMD Connect, a SIM card with global data roaming

If you frequently travel abroad, you probably know that it can sometimes be a chore to stay connected everywhere. Paying for roaming plans can quickly get pretty expensive on your average everyday carrier, not to mention there are some international destinations that it probably doesn’t cover, forcing you to buy a local SIM card when you arrive at your destination, which could get clumsy. HMD, which has, so far, only dedicated to selling smartphones under the Nokia banner, is now launching a new mobile-related venture–this time, they want to make sure you’re connected no matter which part of the world you’re in.

HMD Connect, which is what this service is called, is pretty much that: a data-only SIM card that can provide you with Internet access in any part of the world. HMD’s new service works in over 120 countries and can connect to a total of 600 networks, so you’re always online even when you’re on the go.

The concept is pretty simple: you can get started with €19.95, which includes the SIM card as well as one “data package.” These data packages will provide you with coverage all across the 120 countries the service supports, but your data cap will differ. A data package will run 1 GB in “Zone 1” countries such as the US, the UK, and Germany, as well as 41 other countries. That data cap is cut in half in Zone 2 countries such as Canada, Hong Kong, and Mexico, which get 500 MB, while it halves again in Zone 3 countries such as Pakistan, Qatar, and Venezuela, which get 250 MB.

Using a data package starts on a 14-day timer, and if you run out of data in that timeframe, you’ll be able to reload it for an additional €5. The service itself doesn’t seem to be exclusive to HMD/Nokia devices either, which means that you can use it no matter which phone you have.

If you think this service is worth it for you, the service is already available as a beta, so be sure to give it a shot!

[Update: Canceled completely] Breaking: Google I/O 2020 has been canceled, will be held remotely

Update (3/20/20 @ 3:20 PM ET): Google will not be holding events in any capacity for Google I/O 2020.

Google I/O 2020 has officially been canceled. This is the latest tech event to be canceled due to concerns around the potential spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The decision was made in accordance with “health guidance from the CDC, WHO, and other health authorities.” Although the physical event will not happen, Google will still hold sessions remotely.

In an email to ticket holders, Google explained that all guests who purchased a ticket to Google I/O will receive a full refund by March 13th. Guests who have registered for I/O 2020 will be automatically granted the option of purchasing a ticket for I/O 2021, no drawing required.

Google says they will “explore other ways to evolve Google I/O to best connect with our developer community” in the coming weeks. The official website will be updated with information as we approach the event. This is a disappointing development for anyone who was looking forward to attending the event, but it’s a smart decision.

Update: Canceled completely

After originally planning to hold digital events in place of a physical Google I/O conference, the company is now canceling the event completely. This comes after the State of California issued a “shelter in place” requirement. Google goes on to say that they “remain committed to sharing ongoing Android updates” on the developer blog and forums. It sounds like Android 11 releases will continue as planned.

Google tests new double tap gestures in Android 11 for taking screenshots and opening recent apps, possibly for the Pixel 3 and Pixel 4

When Google released Android 11 Developer Preview 1 last month, we detailed a new set of gestures code-named “Columbus” that allows you to double tap the rear of your device to start the Assistant, open the camera app, and more. At the time, we strongly suspected the feature was intended for Pixel phones rather than all Android phones running Android 11, but we didn’t know if the feature would be exclusive to only newer Pixel devices. Now with the release of Android 11 Developer Preview 2, there are hints that the feature is being tested on the Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL. Furthermore, Google has added two new actions to the set of “Columbus” gestures: taking a screenshot and opening the recent apps overview. Lastly, the company has also refined the implementation to reduce false positives. Here’s what we know so far.

The new “Columbus” gestures do not require any special hardware to work; instead, they use sensor data from the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope to determine if the user has double-tapped the rear of the device. To reduce power drain and/or unwanted triggers, these double tap gestures have “gates” that prevent them from working in certain conditions such as when the screen is off, the lock screen is visible, or the camera app is open. New in Android 11 Developer Preview 2 is code that reduces false positives by implementing high-pass and low-pass filters on the accelerometer and gyroscope data. Several new classes have been added to SystemUIGoogle to that effect: Highpass1C, Highpass3C, Lowpass1C, Lowpass3C, and more. Google has seemingly also optimized “Columbus” gestures for the Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 4, and Pixel 4 XL, as we’ve spotted references to TensorFlow Lite machine learning models for these three devices.

In my previous post, I noted that the “Columbus” gestures could trigger the following actions:

  • Dismiss timer
  • Launch camera
  • Launch Google Assistant
  • Play/pause media
  • Collapse status bar
  • Silence incoming phone calls
  • Snooze alarms
  • Unpin notifications
  • Perform a “user selected action”

I also embedded videos that showed us controlling media, launching the Google Assistant, and launching the Google Camera app using a double tap on the rear of the Pixel 2 XL.

Now, here are videos I recorded showing the two new gestures that have been added in Android 11 Developer Preview 2: taking a screenshot and opening the recent apps overview. Both videos show the gestures working on my Pixel 3a XL running Android 11 Developer Preview 2.

Note that although I enabled this feature on my Pixel 3a XL (and earlier, my Pixel 2 XL), there’s no evidence that either device will support these gestures when they’re made official. However, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3a have the necessary hardware to support these gestures, so we could see Google add support for them down the line.

[Update 2: Sprint 5G Model] OnePlus says the 7 Pro 5G will get Android 10 in Q1 2020

Update 2 (3/20/20 @ 11:40 AM ET): OnePlus is rolling out Android 10 with OxygenOS 10 to the Sprint OnePlus 7 Pro 5G.

Update 1 (3/3/20 @ 11:40 AM ET): The OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is finally getting its Android 10 update with OxygenOS 10.

We’ve been talking a lot about the OnePlus 7T series lately, which initially launched without a separate 5G model. That was surprising considering OnePlus was one of the first to launch a 5G phone. We now know the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition will be launching with 5G on T-Mobile, but we’ve also got some good (and bad) news for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G on EE. It’s getting Android 10, but OnePlus says it’ll happen next year.

OxygenOS 10 based on Android 10 was released for the non-5G OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7 over a month ago. However, the 5G variant was left out in the cold, which certainly didn’t make owners happy. There’s a lengthy complaint thread over on the OnePlus Forums about the device. A OnePlus Community Manager took to that thread to share the news that they plan to release Android 10 for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G EE in Q1 2020.

OnePlus 7 XDA Forums ||| OnePlus 7 Pro XDA Forums

As a reminder, this is the changelog that OnePlus included with the OxygenOS 10 update for the 7 and 7 Pro (non-5G):

  • System
    • Upgraded to Android 10
    • Brand new UI design
    • Enhanced location permissions for privacy
    • New customization feature in Settings allowing you to choose icon shapes to be displayed in the Quick Settings
  • Full-Screen Gestures
    • Added inward swipes from the left or right edge of the screen to go back
    • Added a bottom navigation bar to allow switching left or right for recent apps
  • Game Space
    • New Game Space feature now joins all your favorite games in one place for easier access and better gaming experience
  • Smart display
    • Intelligent info based on specific times, locations and events for Ambient Display (Settings – Display – Ambient Display – Smart Display)
  • Message
    • Now possible to block spam by keywords for Message (Messages – Spam – Settings – Blocking settings)

“Q1 2020” puts the release date somewhere between the first of the year and the end of March. It should also be noted that the Community Manager explicitly mentions the EE model, so we have no idea when Android 10 will arrive for OnePlus 7 Pro 5G models in other parts of the world. That’s a pretty big bummer as the 5G model costs more and has received a lot less support.

Update 1: Rolling Out

As promised, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G sold by EE in the UK and Elisa in Finland is now getting Android 10 with OxygenOS 10. The company said the device would get the update in Q1 and they have followed through. This is the same update with the same changelog as outlined in the original article above. You can download the update from the link below.

Update 2: Sprint 5G Model

The Sprint variant of the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G is now following the others and receiving Android 10 with OxygenOS 10. This is the same update with the same changelog as outlined above. You can check for the update by going to Settings > System > System updates.

Google Messages 5.9 adds an image markup tool

Messages is Google’s main messaging app right now and the company is pushing it as hard as they can. Most of their efforts have been toward bringing RCS support to as many people as possible. Features are obviously important as well, and Google is now adding an image markup tool to the app.

The image markup tool in Messages is currently in beta testing. This is very similar to the Markup tool we’ve seen in Google Photos and built into Pixel devices. You can access the editor by attaching an image to a message and tapping on the image before sending it. There will be a squiggle and text icon in the top right corner that allows you to draw or add text to the image.

There are a few different pen options, including highlighter, pen, and marker. The text can be resized and dragged and rotated around the image, but there aren’t any font options. There are nine colors to choose from for the drawing and text. Once done with your editing, simply tap “Done” and “Attach” and it will be added to the message.

The markup tool is available in Messages version 5.9 beta. Sign up for the beta in the Play Store to try it out right now. Features like this are really important if Google wants the Messages app to compete with the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Both of those popular services are chock full of features like this. People want to be able to add personality to messages.

OnePlus’ Instant Translation feature shows up in the latest OxygenOS betas for the OnePlus 7/7T

During the launch of the OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus teased an “Instant Translation” feature that will allow users on live video calls to translate speech between one another. Since the initial teaser, we haven’t seen any indication of when the feature would launch to the public, but now there’s strong evidence it could be soon. The latest OxygenOS Open Betas for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T series quietly added the Instant Translation app, even though it isn’t mentioned in the official changelog. We’re not sure why it wasn’t mentioned, but here’s your first look at the feature anyways.

Once you install the latest beta build, you can access Instant Translation from Settings > Utilities > OnePlus Laboratory. If you enable the toggle at the top of the Instant Translation settings page, you’ll have access to a Quick Settings tile that toggles the service. In the Settings page, you can also choose which two languages you want to translate between. Currently, you can select English, French, German, Hindi, or Chinese. Lastly, you can also enable a toggle that will cause the service to only translate speech from the other party.

I enabled the Instant Translation service via the Quick Setting tile on my OnePlus 7 Pro and started a Google Duo video call to my OPPO Find X2 Pro, but I did not see any translation subtitles. The introduction to the feature mentions the service works during video calls, but I’m not sure exactly which applications are supported. I did a quick examination of the APK and found that it uses Google Translate to handle translations, but I couldn’t find much else. Given that OnePlus hasn’t made any announcements about the inclusion of this service, though, it’s possible that Instant Translation wasn’t meant to be included in this release. If OnePlus does make an announcement, or if we manage to get this feature working, we’ll update this post.
