Scrapped Essential Phone 2 and 3 get shown off by a former Essential designer

Essential jumped onto the smartphone scene in 2017 with the Essential Phone PH-1, riding on the reputation of its founder, Andy Rubin, better known for co-founding Android. The company got to release only one smartphone, before it was unceremoniously shut down in February 2020. This came as a surprise to a fair few people, as the company had been exceptional with the software support it afforded to its singular device, with regular monthly security patches and major Android OS updates released right after Google (including Android 11 Developer Preview 1 through a GSI). Now, a former Essential designer has shared images of what would have been the Essential Phone 2 and Essential Phone 3.

Mr. Kevin Hoffman worked with Essential as a lead designer and had the opportunity to guide the company’s product lineup. In a brief post on his website, which has since been locked down, Mr. Hoffman has shared images of the unreleased devices.

Essential Phone 2 / PH-2

Essential PH-2 Essential PH-2 Essential PH-2

The Essential PH-2 would have followed closely along the design cues laid down by the PH-1. We can see the flat rear panel with the dual cameras and the dual magnetic pin attachments and the fingerprint sensor. The visible change is along the metal frame, which is now rounded off a bit. The back glass also appeared to be matte this time around.

“PH2 was a project I overtook as lead designer during a team reorganization. I contributed to early conceptualization, form & detail iteration, creating visual presentations, collaborating with Chinese vendors and meeting for product builds, CMF/PRD documentation for manufacturing, CMF approvals, etc.

This phone had a semi-round side profile for considered ergonomics and “slim border” look, a dual camera system, SUS321 ultra-fine bead blasted frame, 2.5D front cover glass, matte chemical etched back cover glass, IP68 rating, 84% screen to body ratio, and supported the “Essential click connect” system. Among others, all these features combined for a competitive mobile device (at the time).”

Essential Phone 3 / PH-3

Essential PH-3 Essential PH-3 Essential PH-3 Essential PH-3

The Essential Phone 3 would have been obviously in earlier stages of development than the other phone, but the company was working on it as recently as this year. Mr. Hoffman shared a few different designs, with the basic idea being housing an existing OLED display with defined dimensions and accomodating a triple camera setup on the rear.

“Essential PH3 was a project I led as a designer in an effort to create an inclusive phone with contemporary tech & aesthetic, at a low price point. The design was constrained to low BOM costs using a preexisting OLED display with defined dimensions, bead-blasted machined aluminum, and 2.5D cover glass.

Noteworthy design detailing is expressed in the back triple camera system: A polished stainless steel camera housing holding a flash module and 3 camera lenses. This exaggerated, bold treatment accentuates a high performance camera story in an age where consumers prioritize phones with exceptional cameras. Additionally, chemical etched back cover glass created further contrast with the camera, and the flat side wall treatment paid homage to the original PH1 Essential phone design language.”

Essential GEM

Essential GEM

The Essential GEM with its bizarre design was teased by Andy Rubin back in October 2019. Obviously, with Essential shutting down, the GEM will no longer be released in any form. Nonetheless, Mr. Hoffman shared some insight into the product:

“Noteworthy industrial design features include a 3D molded glass unibody (a manufacturing feat that has never been done before with the help of Corning Glass), a MX resistant coating with striking color effects, and a slim form factor & OLED display that refocuses how we interact with mobile devices.”

With Essential now essentially dead, these planned products just provide a window of insight into a future that could have been.

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 is now available for the ASUS ROG Phone II

Getting your hands on a shiny new ASUS ROG Phone II might be a difficult task at this moment due to the COVID-19 outbreak, but that didn’t stop the Taiwanese company from releasing the long-anticipated Android 10 update as well as the corresponding kernel source code for this device. Matter of fact, an official bootloader unlock utility for the ROG Phone II does exist, making this beastly phone a feasible choice for tinkering. ASUS went a step further and sent several units of the ROG Phone II to custom ROM and kernel developers, just like they did with the ZenFone 6, i.e. their current mainstream flagship. One of those recipients, XDA Recognized Developer luca020400, has now released an unofficial build of LineageOS 17.1 for the device.

ASUS ROG Phone II XDA Forums || Buy ASUS ROG Phone II from Flipkart

To try out this build of LineageOS‌ 17.1, all you need is an unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery like TWRP installed on your device. While the phone is officially supported by TWRP, you might require an Android 10-compatible unofficial build by the maintainer. Some users are having difficulties to install the current build of LineageOS‌ 17.1 via TWRP, but there is also an alternate way of flashing the package via Fastboot. The developer has also provided a standalone version of the LineageOS recovery image to make things easier.

It is worth mentioning that users don’t have to install a separate Google apps package (commonly referred to as GApps) after installing this particular build, as the developer has decided to ship them inside the same package for the time being. The ROM doesn’t support Air Triggers and the vibrator does not work properly, but fundamental functionalities, including the 120Hz high refresh rate, are working.

Unofficial LineageOS 17.1 for the ASUS ROG Phone II — XDA Thread

XDA Senior Member Freak07, better known as the creator of the Kirisakura custom kernel, has also released a beta build of his kernel for the ROG Phone II running Android 10. If you want to get the most out of the camera, you can check out some Google Camera ports for this phone as well.

ASUS has already done an impressive job by allowing the users of the ROG Phone II to choose between the gaming-inspired ROG UI and the stock-like ZenUI Classic. Now that the aftermarket development work on the phone is gaining momentum, perhaps we might see the official inclusion of this phone within the LineageOS project soon.

Redmi K30 Pro to come with 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, 8K video recording, Dual OIS

The Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro is coming to China on March 24, 2020, and Redmi has already begun its slew of device teasers which detail various aspects of the device in the run up to its launch. The Redmi K30 Pro will come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 SoC, LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1 storage, as well as a single pop-up camera, an improved vibration motor, Game Turbo 3.0 with voice changer, AMOLED display with HDR10+ support, and more. Today, Redmi has revealed the fourth color variant, gray with red power button, as well as dropped a few key details about the camera.

The Redmi K30 Pro is equipped with the 64MP Sony IMX686 camera for its primary setup on the rear. This includes a large 1/1.7″ sensor, 1.6μm after pixel-binning and a 7P lens setup. The sensor will also be capable of 8K video recording (resolution of 7680 × 4320)

The Redmi K30 Pro will also feature dual OIS, which is OIS plus EIS, resulting in steady videos even in sub-optimal situations. The rear camera setup also includes a telephoto sensor capable of 3x optical zoom and 30x digital zoom.

There a few things which are left unexplored yet. For instance, Redmi has not yet revealed what the other two sensors would be. The front camera is also left unexplored — we just know that it will be a popup camera and have multi-colored LEDs on the side of the popup (unlike the Redmi K20 series which had a single color LED). Redmi has also not clarified the refresh rate of the display, which we continue to presume to be 60Hz only. Battery and fast charging technologies within the phone are also left unexplored, as well as several smaller bits and pieces. We do know that the phone has a 3.5mm headphone jack, though. We also do not know what would be the differentiating aspects of the Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition against the regular variant. We hope to find all of these soon enough.

[Update: Rollout paused] Hotstar brings Disney+ content to India as “Disney+ Hotstar”

Update 1 (03/20/2020 @ 03:32 AM ET): Hotstar has officially confirmed that the Disney+ Hotstar rollout has been paused. Scroll to the bottom for more information. The article as published on March 11, 2020, is preserved below.

Disney is the world’s largest media production house. About a year ago, it announced its entry into the online streaming business with a new cross-platform service to compete with content providers like Hulu and Netflix. Called Disney+, the service went live in November last year, offering exclusive content from Pixar, Marvel Studios, Star Wars as well as The Simpsons franchises under the same roof. While Disney+ is has been restricted to a handful of countries since its launch, Indians can enjoy its exclusive content with homegrown streaming app, Hotstar. The app has now been rebranded as “Disney+ Hotstar” and the content is available to all Premium members without any extra cost.

The online streaming Hotstar is owned by one of India’s largest TV networks – Star India, which was previously owned by 21st Century Fox. When Disney acquired Fox in 2018, all TV channels under the Star TV network as well as Hotstar became to be owned by the former. With the announcement of the new streaming service, it was also confirmed that Hotstar will host the content in India.

Hotstar’s Android app has recently been updated with a new user interface, logo, and splash screen. The update UI also exudes a Disney+ Hotstar branding along with a color scheme in line with Disney+. While Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame have been available on Hotstar since its release on Disney+, new titles are now being added to the app. Gadgets 360 compiled a list of titles now available on the platform and these include:

While Hotstar operates with a freemium model and has three tiers of subscription. Besides the free tier, there’s Hotstar VIP, which mostly has Indian content but without any ads, and Hotstar Premium, which has paid Indian content along with international hits like Game of Thrones. Disney+ content will only be available for Hotstar Premium users and the membership for the same costs ₹199 ($2.70) a month or ₹999 ($13.50) a year.

We can also expect localization of content through audio dubbing in Indian languages as more Disney+ content is made available on the platform. While the majority of Disney’s content is now destined to be available via Hotstar, some short-form content also continues to be available on JioCinema.

Update: Hotstar officially pauses rollout of Disney+ Hotstar

Within 24 hours of the content first being spotted, Hotstar had already pulled back Disney+ content from its app and rolled back to the previous state. Now, the company has officially confirmed that it is pausing the rollout of Disney+ Hotstar.

Mr. Uday Shankar, President at The Walt Disney Company APAC and Chairman at Star & Disney India, released a statement:

“We recently announced that Disney+ would launch in India through the Hotstar service in conjunction with beginning of the Indian Premier League cricket season. Given the delay of the season, we have made the decision to briefly pause the roll-out of Disney+ and will announce a new revised premiere date for the service soon.”

The rollout has thus been paused indefinitely. The decision to postpone the IPL 2020 season was taken in light of COVID-19, and consequently, the same has now pushed back this launch.

OnePlus experimented with a marble OnePlus 7T, but you can’t buy it

The OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro were launched back in May 2019, and while we are still a month and half away from completing a year from that launch, reports suggest that the government is gearing up for a device announcement on April 15, 2020. While we wait for OnePlus to make an official announcement for the launch date, the company has shared alternative CMF experiments that it did on past smartphones.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau shared on Twitter photographs of OnePlus smartphones that are a tad bit different from the phones that consumers could buy.

Pete Lau captioned the photos:

We do more testing with colors, materials, and finishing (“CMF”) than you could imagine, because that’s what decides the overall feel of a phone. We’ve got more to share soon, but until then, what’s your favorite out of these past devices?

OnePlus CMF Concepts

OnePlus is no stranger to concept phones, as it recently showcased the OnePlus Concept One to enthusiasts around the world. The OnePlus Concept One primarily showed off the invisible camera technology, but it also set the ground for showing off an alternative CMF of leather with faux stitching for the rear panel. But with these CMF experiments, the core idea was to try out different colors, materials, and finishing firsthand on products that are intended to reach the mass market but may not be completely ready just yet.

OnePlus CMF Concepts

In the pictures, we can see a few familiar faces in different avatars. There’s the regular OnePlus 7T, but also one with a marble finish sporting a camera design that was seen in one of the earliest leaks. Next, we see three different OnePlus 6‘s: one with a glossy white-and-cyan gradient, one with a matte white finish (different from the Silk White variant), and one with a denim blue color and rough gradient (but hard to determine from just images if its a wood-like finish). And then there’s the matte white OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition, which is the second phone among the six pictured that customers could buy. It does appear that the company used some of the learnings from the white-and-cyan gradient phone to make the Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T.

We are close to the OnePlus 8 series launch, and this curious share by Mr. Lau does pique our interest. Will we see any of these CMF alternatives adopted for the upcoming phones? Guess we will have to wait to find out.
