[Update: Rolling out widely] Android 10 “Rules” automation feature rolls out to some Pixel devices

Update (3/2/20 @ 11:25 AM ET): The Android 10 “Rules” feature is finally rolling out more widely to Pixel devices.

Back in May, we discovered the first signs of a new feature in Android Q Beta 3, code-named “Routines”. Strings in the SettingsIntelligence APK showed that the feature would be presented to users as “Rules”, but it wasn’t live for any Pixel user. Rules are Google’s take on Bixby Routines, and much of the same functionality can also be found in Google Assistant Routines. In July, Mishaal was able to fully activate the feature on a Google Pixel 2 XL running Android Q Beta 5, but the feature still hadn’t rolled out. At that time, we thought that the feature would be shown off as part of the Google Pixel 4’s launch Android 10 software, as it was a bit too late for Google to add the feature in the first stable Android 10 release. However, the Pixel 4’s launch came and went last week, and we noted that Rules was not present on the launch software, which was strange as the feature had been in development for at least five months already.

Rules is an Android 10 feature that helps “automate changes that you regularly make in Settings,” according to Google. It doesn’t match dedicated automation apps such as Tasker and Automate by a long shot in terms of functionality, but it offers useful basic functionality, nonetheless. Google also isn’t the first to offer this feature in an Android phone as Samsung and LG also have similar phones in their custom user interfaces. Google’s Rules feature is specifically designed to let users change the sound mode to Ring, Vibrate, Silence, or Do Not Disturb when a) they either connect to a Wi-Fi network of their choice or b) they are near a location they have selected on a map. Users can silence the phone when reaching college, for instance, and then set it to the Ring mode as soon as they connect back to their home Wi-Fi network.

Now, Google appears to have started rolling out the “Rules” feature to a select group of Google Pixel users on Android 10. Reddit user /u/NeXt3D3 reported that he saw the new setting under the System tab of the Settings app on his Pixel 2 XL. Four other users in the Reddit thread have also reported getting the feature on their Pixels. For now, it doesn’t seem to be a widespread release as many users still haven’t received the feature yet – Google is, as expected, doing a staged rollout. Regardless, it’s good to see the functionality being separated from Google Assistant and offered as a standalone feature. It seems likely that Rules will be a Pixel-exclusive feature for now.

Update: Rolling out widely

After appearing to roll out late last year, Android 10’s “Rules” feature is now more widely available. First reported by Android Police, many people now have the Rules feature on their Pixel device. Several of us here at XDA also have the feature now. You can find Rules by going to the “System” section of the Settings or simply doing a search for “Rules” in the Settings. The feature is still not super powerful, but this shows Google is at least preparing it for more users.

Huawei exploring IndusOS’s AppBazaar app store in India as a Google Play Store alternative

It is no secret that Huawei has been having a rough time dealing with the fallout from being placed on the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List. While their operations within China remain unaffected by this, their operations outside of China have been massively affected, especially in the smartphone market. The Entity List prevents U.S. companies from doing business with this Chinese company, which in turn prevents Google from licensing its Google Mobile Services and accompanying suite of apps to Huawei for new devices. Google has applied again for an exemption, but while that takes its own sweet time to get sorted, Huawei is in the market looking for options. And it may have settled on IndusOS’s AppBazaar for its app distribution needs in the Indian region, according to a report.

If the name IndusOS sounds vaguely familiar, you may have heard about them in connection with Indic support in app stores like the Samsung Galaxy App Store. Back in early 2019, Samsung had partnered with IndusOS’s AppBazaar to allow Samsung Galaxy users in India to browse apps in their native languages instead of just English. Currently, IndusOS’s AppBazaar app store has more than 400,000 regional apps in 12 local languages, namely Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

According to a report from Economic Times, Huawei is looking to sign a deal with IndusOS to offer a curated Android app store on Huawei and Honor smartphones. The report suggests that the deal is within the context of the Indian market, but both the companies are exploring whether the partnership can be expanded globally. This does not mean that we will directly see AppBazaar being included on EMUI devices in India, but we can expect solutions employed within AppBazaar also be employed in other fashions on these devices.

Huawei faces the steep challenge of convincing average users to use its smartphones without Google apps, which also breaks down the entire chain of connected apps and APIs in other non-Google apps. Huawei does have its own AppGallery alternative for the Play Store, but since the company has approached an alternative app store for its business in India, one can presume that the store is not doing too well. Partnering with IndusOS might just be what Huawei needs to stay in the Indian and global market for longer. Though, it is still difficult to find convincing reasons to purchase a non-Google Huawei smartphone when hundreds of other options exist, even with Indic language support.

MIUI Gallery in MIUI 11 tests adding rain and snow weather filters to videos

Xiaomi introduced a new sky replacement feature in the MIUI 11 Gallery app back in May last year. As the name suggests, the feature allowed users to replace the sky in any of their images with a different sky present on the app. The feature included a number of different presets that could give your photos a completely different look and make them seem like that they were clicked in completely different weather conditions. Then, earlier this month, we learned that Xiaomi had added a new video editor to the MIUI 11 Gallery app on its flagship Mi 10, which included a boatload of features to help users edit their videos. Now, it seems like Xiaomi has combined these two features and will be introducing new weather effect filters for videos in the MIUI Gallery app.

The upcoming weather filters were discovered by XDA Junior Member kacskrz in the MIUI Gallery version 2.2.15.12 from the latest MIUI 11 China Developer ROM. The feature could, most likely, be called “dynamic sky filter” and it lets you apply a rain or snow filter to your videos. Igor Eisberg from the Xiaomi.eu team managed to manually activate the feature and shared the attached videos that showcase what you can do with the new weather filters.

As you can see, the weather filters just add a very realistic rain or snow overlay to the video and give it a completely different aesthetic. As of now, Xiaomi has revealed no information about this new feature and the filters will seemingly only be available for the Xiaomi Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, and Redmi K30 Pro upon release. It’s also worth noting that Xiaomi may add more weather filters to the feature before it’s officially released.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 will support India’s NavIC in a future update

Back in October last year, American chipmaker Qualcomm announced support for India’s NavIC Satellite Navigation system in select chipsets. Then, earlier this year in January, the company officially announced the new Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 662, and Snapdragon 460 SoCs, with support for the Indian satellite navigation system. However, it’s flagship Snapdragon 865 chip still doesn’t support the Indian navigation system. Thankfully though, that’s set to change soon as per a recent announcement from Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has now revealed that the Snapdragon 865 will be NavIC capable with its final software update. The company was quoted saying, “In October 2019, Qualcomm announced support for India’s NavIC Satellite Navigation System in commercial chipset platforms and we are pleased to be working with ISRO to bring NavIV to Indian consumers and enhance their navigation experience via more accurate location performance, faster time-to-first-fix (TTFF) position acquisition, and improved robustness. Recent Snapdragon Mobile Platform launches such as Snapdragon 765, 720G, 662 and 460 support NavIC. Snapdragon 865 is NavIC capable with the final software update coming to our OEMs around April 2020.”

The aforementioned “final software update” that will be released to OEMs later this year is the Board Support Package (BSP) that Qualcomm offers to OEMs. OEMs take the BSP and build their Android releases on top of it. This means that even if Qualcomm releases the final software update in April, it will be quite a while before the NavIC support reaches consumers via an Android update from their respective OEM.

For the unaware, the NavIC or Navigation with Indian Constellation system covers India and a region extending 1,500km from its borders to provide real-time positioning and timing services on two levels. The satellite system uses the L5 signal at a frequency of 1176.45 with a bandwidth of 24MHz (1164.45-1188.45MHz) and currently consists of 7 satellites with 2 on the ground as standbys. With NavIC support on Qualcomm’s chips, users are expected to see a major improvement in location-based applications in India.

OPPO launches the Reno3 Pro internationally with dual front cameras, quad rear cameras, and MediaTek Helio P95

OPPO had launched the Reno3 and Reno3 Pro in China at the very end of 2019, bringing over a good set of 5G phones to the Chinese market. While 5G is indeed the next step of evolution for smartphones, the rollout of this technology is at nascent stages in several parts of the world. In some regions, a 5G phone would be a fair few years early to the market, and for a consumer in those regions, it would make very little sense to pay a premium for a 5G smartphone right now. Realizing the differing need of the market, OPPO has launched a 4G variant of the Reno3 Pro for the international market at an event in India.

The OPPO Reno3 Pro 4G is similar to the Reno3 Pro 5G in terms of a few design elements, but there are a fair few differences across the devices. The first visually noticeable change is the display, as the 4G variant comes with a flat Super AMOLED display as opposed to the curved display on the Reno3 Pro 5G. Consequently, the 4G variant also loses out on some of the highlight features on the Reno3 Pro 5G, like the 90Hz refresh rate.

Powering the Reno3 Pro (4G) is the newly announced MediaTek Helio P95 SoC, coupled with 8GB RAM as well as 128GB and 256GB storage options. The change in the processor was expected since the Reno3 Pro launched in China came with 5G capabilities, and 5G smartphones in markets like India do not really make sense right now in early 2020.

OPPO Reno3 Pro (4G)

The main focus of the Reno3 Pro is the camera setup, both on the front and rear. The primary 64MP sensor is capable of shooting “ultra-clear 108MP image” through clever use of multi-frame photos and sub-pixel interpolation in broad daylight. Zoom duties are handled by the telephoto camera, providing 2x optical zoom, and up to 20x digital zoom. For the front, the phone sports a 44MP main camera and a 2MP depth sensor, ensuring your selfies are top-notch, even in low light situations thanks to Ultra Night Selfie Mode.

Pricing and Availability

The OPPO Reno3 Pro will be available in India from March 6 in Auroral Blue, Midnight Black, and Sky White colors. The 8GB/128GB variant will be available at a price of ₹29,990 ($415) in the first sale; while the 8GB/256GB variant will be available for ₹32,990 ($455) at a later date. The phone will be available on Flipkart.

Redmi Note 9 launches in India on March 12

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note lineup of devices is undoubtedly one of the most popular series from the Chinese manufacturers. The mid-range devices are known to offer great hardware at a compelling price and, as a result, they’ve been among the best selling devices from the company. For instance, the Redmi Note 7 was among the top 10 best selling smartphones of 2019 and the Redmi Note 8 and Note 8 Pro were among the top 10 best selling smartphones in Q4 2019. Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 8 (review) and Note 8 Pro (review) in China back in August last year, featuring a Snapdragon 665 SoC and MediaTek Helio G90T SoC, respectively. The devices were launched in India late last year in October and Xiaomi managed to sell 1 million units of the two devices within a month of launch. Now, according to a recent tweet from Xiaomi’s Global VP and MD Xiaomi India, Manu Kumar Jain, the company is planning to launch the Redmi Note 9 in India on March 12.

In the tweet, Jain reveals that the next Redmi Note device launches on March 12 and the accompanying image has a large number 9 with four cameras in between. This confirms that the company will be launching the Redmi Note 9 series at the event. The tweet further reveals that the upcoming Redmi Note 9 will lay strong emphasis on the cameras and will offer “ProCamerasMaxPerformance”. As of now, Xiaomi hasn’t confirmed if it’ll be launching both the Redmi Note 9 and Note 9 Pro at the launch event, but considering past trends, it’s safe to assume that the company might launch both the devices together. Interestingly though, the Redmi Note 9 series hasn’t been launched in China yet so we currently don’t have any information about its specifications or pricing.
