ZUK Officially Launches the ZUK Edge, with a 86.4% Screen-to-Body Ratio

ZUK is a spin off of Lenovo's smartphone business and operates independently from Lenovo itself (similar to how Honor operates independent of Huawei). The ZUK Z1, launched in August of last year, was one of the few smartphones that ran Cyanogen OS out of the box. They've released a handful of smartphones since then, but this week the company officially announced the ZUK Edge. This smartphone has an 86.4% screen-to-body ratio and has an impressive design for the small company.

Minimizing bezels seems to be a popular trend these days, and while the screen-to-body ratio isn't as high as the Xiaomi Mi Mix, it's still higher than most smartphones available today. We're looking at a device with dimension of 142.9 x 74.5 x 7.68 mm and a metal frame around the phone. Unlike Samsung's edge variants, the ZUK Edge does not have curved glass on the sides. It does have a 2.5D piece of glass on the front though.

lenovo-zuk-edge

Speaking of the display, the ZUK Edge has a 5.5″ 1080p panel with a fingerprint scanner sitting right below it. Inside, we see it sporting the Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 SoC and 64GB of internal storage. There will be two versions available for purchase, with the first having 4GB of RAM and the second having 6GB of RAM. There's a 13MP camera on the back of the ZUK Edge and an 8MP sensor on the front.

It will have dual SIM support, and has a 3,100mAh capacity battery to power the device. Pricing for the ZUK Edge starts at 2,299 Yuan (~$330) for the 4GB of RAM model and 2,499 Yuan (~$360) for the 6GB version. Those who live in China can reserve their device right now, but the phone will not go on sale until January 1st. At this time, there hasn't been any information given about whether or not ZUK will release this device in other markets.

OnePlus Wants to Manufacture the OnePlus 3T in India Soon

It is clear that OnePlus has been struggling to meet the demand of the OnePlus 3T (and even the original OnePlus 3 in some markets). I personally ordered mine back on December 4th, and it's not even scheduled to ship until tomorrow, December 22nd. Other employees at the XDA office have also had to wait until this week for their OnePlus 3T to finally ship, but at least OnePlus is working to resolve the issue.

In India, the company says they're looking to start manufacturing the new smartphone next year. A report from Reuters, who spoke with the General Manager of OnePlus's Indian operations, said they should have a manufacturing partnership set in early Q1 of 2017. The GM said that OnePlus will likely be working with multiple partners within India, but declined to name any of them other than Foxconn.

IDC recently published a report that says OnePlus is the third-biggest seller of premium smartphones within India. It's clear that premium build quality paired with the respectable price point makes the OnePlus 3T a very attractive device. OnePlus says they have likely lost 30% of sales because they have not been able to keep the device in stock. At this time, OnePlus is only officially selling the device on Amazon, and the company says they don't have any immediate plans to change this arrangement.

There are other unofficial outlets to buy OnePlus products though, as we've talked about in the past, but OnePlus has advised that consumers purchase their devices through official retailers. They don't have plans to sell the device at other retailers right now, but they are looking to open an "experience center" soon. OnePlus says this will likely be located in the southern Indian technology hub of Bengaluru, so potential customers can try out OnePlus's products before they decide to order them.

Secure Individual Apps with IOBit Applock [+Win a Moto Z Play!]

Applock is a security application developed by IObit. You can use Applock to apply a PIN, password or facelock to any of your specified apps. This is ideal for keeping people from seeing your Snapchat, Instagram, email, or other private information. It's ideal for those that share their device or that cannot use a lockscreen security method for whatever reason. Some people use Smart Unlock in Android to keep their phone unlocked under certain scenarios, thus making their phone susceptible to prying eyes. This app even can fool someone into thinking that an app is continuously force closing so they don't get suspicious that you've deliberately locked down an app. In this video, Miles takes us through all of the many features within the app.

Contest: We're giving away an unlocked Moto Z Play. To enter the contest, scroll down the page and use the contest widget to enter. But first, here's some more information about Applock.

App Locking

Keep your most sensitive information secure by putting a password on your apps. Once your phone is unlocked, your photos, social media, email and texts are accessible to intruders. Secure them with a second layer of either a password, code or facelock.

lock5

Face Lock

The facelock feature allows you to use facial recognition to unlock your protected apps. This can sometimes be a security risk because normally an intruder could hold up a picture of your face to bypass the lock. With the facelock "lively" feature, the app will ask you to move your face from side to side to ensure that you're a real person.

lock3

"Fake" Lock

When someone encounters your password input, it might pique their interest even more to what you might be hiding. Avoid this by using the fake lock feature. This will disguise your password input as either a picture, a force close error, a cracked screen, or one of the other options that you can choose from.

lock1

Intruder Selfie

Find out who's trying to guess your lock code. After three failed attempts to get passed your app lock, the front camera will snap a picture and store it in the app's security center.

lock4

Change Icon

When an intruder finds out that you have a security app, the first thing they might do is try to find it so they can attempt to uninstall it. Avoid this by disguising the Applock icon with one of the build-in options.

What are the best apps of 2016? What is the greatest appeal of these apps? Do you like them for their design/UI, their functionality, their ease-of-use and flexibility, their open source nature, or something entirely different? Is the app free, paid, ad-driven or IAP-based?

Unlocking the True Power of Google Home with AutoVoice

When Google Home was first released, it didn't seem as impressive as Amazon's Echo line-up.

One of our writers who owns both an Amazon Echo and a Google Home reported that while the Google Home had its moments, Google Assistant was not as responsive of extensively integrated as Alexa. However, we both knew, or at least hoped, that Google would make good on its promise to open up Google Assistant to third-party developers. After teasing a release date for the Google Assistant Developer Program, the company finally unveiled Actions on Google earlier this month.

It was only a matter of time until developers started cooking up powerful plug-ins for Google Assistant. One of the most anticipated plugins for Google Assistant we've been waiting for is full integration with joaomgcd's AutoApps suite. As many of you are aware, we at XDA are huge fans of Tasker. Tasker is one of the most powerful automation tools in the arsenal of an Android power user. You can do just about anything with Tasker — as long as you have an active imagination and the requisite knowledge and skill to create Tasker scripts. A great deal of Tasker's versatility comes from the additional plugins that increase the scope of the original application.

AutoVoice is one such Tasker plugin. With this plugin, you can create custom Google Now voice commands and automate actions through spoken commands instead of traditional clicks and taps on your phone's screen. And now, AutoVoice is becoming even more intelligent through integrating with Google Home.

As can be seen in the video, Google Home seems to be a natural extension to AutoVoice's existing functionality. Using the plugin, you can create your own custom commands for various tasks – tapping into existing Android third-party plugins to allow for a wider breadth of functionality. In addition to commands, you can also program custom replies as demoed by the several dialogues taken from The Simpsons in the video.

With AutoVoice, you can even create commands for direct IoT device interaction as can be seen in the video. Of course, since it is a Tasker plugin, you can also chain it together with other Tasker plugins such as AutoLaunch and more, allowing you to make use of the contextual processing powers of Google Home to react with different apps on your phone. In essence, AutoVoice for Google Home acts as a gateway to integrate with anything and everything that your smartphone can integrate it – all from your voice.

autovoice-approvaljoaomgcd has mentioned that AutoVoice for Google Home is currently under the review phase. Google's control over the Google Home ecosystem means that distribution of services such as these is dependent on Google's approval. As such, you will have to wait and hope that Google approves AutoVoice for Google Home sooner rather than later.

The Best ROMs, Kernels, and Mods for the OnePlus 3

oneplus_logo

The OnePlus 3 brings forth a design refreshment that does away with the signature sandstone back of the previous two phones, and shakes up the design language by softening curves and edges, as well as changing the material employed.

While the OnePlus 2 introduced a sturdy magnesium frame to complement the sandstone back, the all-metal OnePlus 3 is made from a single block of aluminum that still ends up feeling surprisingly sturdy. Indeed, while the OnePlus 3 lacks the heft of its predecessor, it ends up appearing quite durable and tests have shown that it likely won't bend on you like similar phones.

How the community reviews the OnePlus 3

"The display is definitely better than what weve had on the previous OnePlus phones. I did find the color saturation a bit weird coming from the LCD of the OnePlus One to the OAMOLED of the OP3, but it's a pretty beautiful display to look at."

K.A.

"Just got the phone today and have been playing with it the past couple hours. In some ways not a big upgrade from my Moto X Pure, but as far as speed it's an absolute joy to use. Everything is extremely snappy and smooth."

Prozart

"Current 6p and HTC 10 user here and I can't even begin to say how impressed I am with this OP3. Grant it I've only had it half a day, so far I'm completely blown away!! Almost 3 hours sot right now and battery at 50% 😃I love everything about it. Only mediocre thing is the external speakers. Amazing camera, beautiful screen, perfect size, feels greet in the hand, shoot it even looks great! Oh and the finger print reader is way faster than both the 10 and 6p. But the thing that impressed me the most is the skin. I'm still bone stock and I never leave phones stock.. it just has all the things Google SHOULD have in stock MM.. no bloatware either.. just an impressive handset and all for 400$ bucks!"

With Google's Phone application you can block spam and other unwanted calls. It also features enhanced caller ID. These are just a few of the features missing from the OP3's default dialer. How to fix a bricked OnePlus 3

Mega Unbrick Guide for Hard Bricked OnePlus 3s

A hard bricked OP3 has nothing but a black screen (nothing ever comes on the screen, not even a boot logo), it might vibrate when a power button is pressed and held for 20 seconds, has no Recovery partition, no adb mode, and no fastboot partition (It might be a flickering OnePlus logo). The device might be detected in Linux and you might be able to even send commands to it. In Windows, the bricked OP3 should be detected as QHUSB_BULK,Unknown Device,Qualcomm something. You might have a bricked OP3 as a result of flashing a kernel meant for a different device (or a ROM meant for another device that included a kernel), tinkering with the boot logo or bootloader, or your attempt of unlocking the bootloader resulted in corrupting the boot partition. Most of the times, it is needed because OEM Unlocking is disabled, and phone can't boot and no recovery.

Not Forgotten: OnePlus X gets a taste of Nougat thanks to CyanogenMod 14.1 Nightlies

Though largely overshadowed by OnePlus's flagship model, the mid-range OnePlus X refuses to die thanks to the dedication of developers on our forums.

Developers were first to publish Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the device, with OnePlus eventually following suit. While some users of the OnePlus X are wary of continued software support, developers have been working hard to ensure that the OnePlus X is not forgotten. The latest milestone in custom ROM development has just been reached: Cyanogenmod 14.1 nightlies.

If you take a look through the OnePlus X forums, you'll notice that there have been a few Nougat-based ROMs out for the OnePlus X. Not to discredit these releases or to credit Cyanogenmod for being the first to release Nougat for the OnePlus X, but official support from the Cyanogenmod project is always welcome as it provides a stable code-base for other custom ROM developers to work off of. In addition, many users are wary of running unofficial firmware on their phones, but may re-consider their stance when presented with a ROM with the history of Cyanogenmod.

Notably, this release skips Android 7.0 and jumps straight to Android 7.1. Given all the improvements in Android 7.1 such as GIF keyboard, touch latency reduction, and app shortcuts, it's certainly a nice move forward for OnePlus X owners. It is unlikely that we will see official Android Nougat for the OnePlus X, due to the lack of updated graphics drivers for the device from Qualcomm resulting in the device failing to meet the graphics compatibility requirements in Nougat. Thus, unofficial releases such as these are what we'll have to deal with, but given the track record of Cyanogenmod and developers on our forums – OnePlus X owners will have little to worry about.
